“will not rush back to the 'Grand'”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

We decided to have a day out to scarborough and a few days before we left I looked online to try and find a hotel but everywhere was booked up so we went and took a small overnight bag with stuff in incase we could find a place .I walked into 'The Grand' about 5pm to a huge queue at reception but the guy there said they did have a room for the night which had a double bed and a single bed and they would put a z bed in for our other child which we thought was great and at £79 we thought this was ok so decided to go for it.
well this is where the fun began-the hotel is huge and we were in the basement on -2 level which we struggled to find the right lift at first and then on the right level its just a maze of corridoors and rooms. The room was a decent enough size but it smelt musty and had a strange high level window. The double bed was not really comfy and we couldn't get signal on our phones as we were so low down! A member of staff did bring a bed for our youngest daughter and it was fairly quick as well. When it was time to go to sleep all we could hear were the seagulls outside and then about 10pm suddenly we heard loud thumping music which was really very loud seeing as though we were 2 floors down-which kept us all awake. The rate did include breakfast but we left early so we didn't have it as breakfast was served 8am-10am which I think is quite late for a hotel.
Parking is limited outside and you need to purchase a permit for the day from the hotel. The hotel is in a convienent location but was just not our cup of tea .We normally stay in a premier inn (it was full) and in our opinon they are much cheaper and nicer than 'The Grand' and there is no entertainment to keep you up all night and all décor and hotels are the same so you know what you are getting. The Grand is an old building but everything inside is old and tatty as well! and even though we were pleased we managed to get a room for the night so that we could extend our weekend there, we would not stay there again.

Good quality food for the money, staff very friendly and helpful especialy good service from Ann Bell and Miss Robin Scott. Nothing was too much trouble. My wife and I had a lovely stay in one of the new rooms which was small and cosy and was very clean and modern. This historic hotel has a lot of character. We will definately return for another visit to this hotel.

Its rated a 2* property and is 27 out of 27 hotels in the town. Should have done my research before booking.
Worst hotel experience in my life. If you can stand the smell of Damp, stomach tinned food, put up with surly reception and management staff, then this is your ideal hotel.
If you can't, then I advise you not to stay here. We stayed here as part of a coach trip organised through David Urquharts of East Kilbride. Frankly I am surprised that any reputable company would use this hotel.
The Hotel was once owned and operated by Butlins and probably still has the original furnishings and crockery.
From a distance it does look Grand, however looks can be quite deceiving.
Rooms - Very small, no windows!!!!! It was stifling hot.
Meal times - Breakfast...Tinned grapefruit and Mandarins on offer. Cornflakes, but not kelloggs!! Fatty greasy bacon. yuk
Dinner - Buffet style...a bit better than breakfast. Kinda reminiscent of school dinners.
The only thing that was good were the dining room staff who worked hard to keep the place clear of empty plates etc.
Overall - worst ever hotel stay. Do yourself a favour. No matter how good a deal you are offered. Don't stay here. Its not worth it. Fawlty Towers pales into insignificance.

We had read previous reviews and were dreading our holiday, but on arrival we were pleasantly surprised. We had one of the turret rooms and although it's a bit of a maze to get to, the room was spotless and tidy, with plenty of snowy white towels. The tea bags in the room were nice although the coffee wasn't took nice.
Yes the restaurant is a buffet style, but a lot of hotels that offer full board are the same style. The first evening the food was lovely, and most nights it was nice, but there isn't much variety, and pork is always on the menu! Breakfast wasn't too great, bacon incredibly fatty and tasteless, and everything was quite greasy. But we just had cereal and toast instead.
Could do with more and better quality entertainment though.
The hotel is full of folk moaning and complaining, which does ruin other peoples holidays, and a lot of the complainers were people just looking for a moan. The staff do an incredibly good job for the amount of guests they have as there is hardly any staff on.
All in all we enjoyed our holiday very much, but I will be honest and say we were very lucky with our room and that if we'd ended up in the basement the review would be totally different.

Room Tip: Don't book a city room, always go for standard double or above.

We have holidays at Britannia Hotels for he last 7 years, formerly with National Holidays and last3 independently. Allowing for fact that they are 2 stars we have never expected luxury but disgusted at this weeks treatment. We arrived at Grand, Scarborough on Monday 11th August. When I had booked I stressed a decent family room (myself, husband & grandson). Paid the £10 extra for early check-in and was given a key for room I can only liken to a coffin in a dungeon-2 floors underground, pitch lack and a 'window' with mesh looking at a brick wall!! Requested a move and told 'it's that or nothing'. Money refunded, grandson upset at thoughts of no holiday. We did find another hotel, but why, when we were willing to pay extra, were we told this was a
standard room. I wouldn't keep cattle in such a place.

Do not stay here. It's hideous. A room without a window stinking of fish and chips. Laminated signs on the bed explaining about norovirus. We ended up sleeping on the floor of my mum in laws room. Staff were so rude and couldn't care less. The only saving grace was the duty manager Ann who sorted out a refund for us. Would never normally stay somewhere like this but it was booked for us. It needs to be shut down and gutted.
