My husband and I booked a 3 night stay at this hotel as a special offer but only stayed for 2 nights as we couldnt stand another night in a bed that I cannot begin to describe - I wouldnt let our westie sleep on it as hes used to far better !!!

Where do I start with such a very sorry state of a hotel ??

We were not welcomed by the reception staff - just told our floor number and given a key. Managed to find the lifts ( there were 2 but only 1 was working so we had to queue - just what us Brits are good at !!! ).

After a maze of corridors and doors we managed to find our 4th floor room - well my face must have fallen on to the filthy carpet in shock - I have never stayed in such a hotel room in all my life - I just couldnt believe what we had been given. Anyway we thought ok its just a room and we shall be out most of the time. The bedroom furniture didnt match -looked like it had been bought at a car boot sale, there were 2 dirty white mugs with 2 teaspoons inside ( no saucers ). There was also some ' spilt ' fluid underneath the glass top table that obviously hadnt been cleaned from previous drink making sessions. The sachets of coffee were disgusting - a make we had never even heard of and it was just awful - also no biscuits etc. There were only 5 channels on the teeny tiny portable tv ( ok we werent there to watch tv all day but still the picture quality was poor ).

The ensuite was so filthy that we both didnt take a shower in the 2 nights we stayed there, the dirt around the pipes, the top of the tap kept coming off everytime you turned it on, the grey lino around the bottom of the toilet was so stained in yellow wee that it made me feel sick. Everytime the person used their ensuite above us you could hear it running down the huge pipe in our ensuite - lovely !!!

The bedroom carpet was dirty and stained.

The bed was so uncomfortable that you could feel every spring wire in it digging into your body which ever way you turned - it was the pits and should have been burnt or chucked in a skip. I dread to think what it was like under the covers - I couldnt bring myself to look.

Breakfast came and what a shambles - 7.30am to 9.30am they told us; so we arrived at 9am and guess what hardly anything left. No juices at all, the eggs ( my husband ) said tasted like rubber, I would imagine that they had been out for ages just being kept warm. I only had cold toast ( they brought it to your table but it was cold ) so yet another complaint which was not acted upon. The tea served was stewed and again awful. Hardly any choice of cereal - the breakfast was very, very poor here indeed.

After our second night we just decided to come home early, however on this particular morning the breakfast was slightly improved, there was juice and very limited fruit - prunes - lovely !!! The mandarins were disgusting, the grapefruit not bad.

We checked out and yet again the reception staff never asked us if we'd had a nice stay, safe journey home etc... nothing, just took the key from us and that was it; as if we had never arrived and were invisible !!!

Would we stay here again - no.

Its such a shame as I can imagine in its hey day it would have been a Grand Hotel - but if they dont tend to the ' little ' niggly things, like light bulbs out, filthy windows looking out to the bay, the carpet and skirting boards all dirty from meal times then they wont attract people like us - Hopefully they will invest in a good vacuum cleaner and some good housekeeping skills.

Sad !!

Thank you for your review. We are most concerned regarding your comments and would like the opportunity to respond. We are sorry some areas of your stay did not meet your expectations. If you felt that staff were unhelpful, we can assure you this was not their intention. We do understand that the hotel has been experiencing technical problems regarding the customer lifts and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Our traditional décor means that often a wide range of fabrics are used to furnish our bedrooms; although, the hotel is currently undergoing refurbishment, which will ensure all rooms are of the same high standard. Your comments regarding housekeeping have been passed to the relevant department for investigation. Our breakfast buffets operate on a self service basis, allowing our guests more flexibility. Food is regularly re-stocked, and we do apologise if there was any delay in this area. We are sincerely sorry that some areas of your stay were not to your satisfaction and we hope this does not deter you from staying with Britannia Hotels in the future. Feedback is important to us as we use it to further improve our services and standards and we thank you for your comments.

I returned to Scarborough on one of my many visits to the Grand and again thoroughly enjoyed it , yes the rooms are tired but it is going through major refurbishment so you must allow for this . this magnificant building still has charm and elegance and the staircase is splendid , a great reminder of days gone by.
The meals are fantastic especially the breakfast and plenty of choice , the restaurant is bright and airy with wonderful views over the sea and harbour, the staff are extremely pleasant . there is a wonderful balcony around the first floor with settes where you can take your drinks if you want some alone time and also watch the comings and goings in the foyer.
There is a large sun terrace with terrific sea views , the Grand is within easy reach of the shops and beach altho hilly in places there are good pathways which zig zag down and in summer the finicular at the side of the hotel should be working [ please check ].
All in all this hotel is fantastic value for money , we shall be returning in May for one of our mini breaks, the price being what it is we can afford more than one. £99 each for 3 days [ weekend ] dinner , bed and breakfast and entertainment. BARGAIN !!!

Ok i read all the reviews before my stay at the Grand but In all fairness britannia hotels are undegoing a 7million pound refurbishment of this hotel that is a victorian building with so much history
It is indeed a Grand Hotel and its interior is very ornate and should be preserved I heard people complaining about lack of lifts but they need to remember when the hotel was built lifts did not exist .. yes the rooms are shabby but the bedding was very clean and you can see the start of the work to upgrade the Hotel
We paid less than £100 for 2 people for a 2 night stay B&B which equates to no more than £20 per head with entertainment thrown in !!
The hotel was quiet at night and the breakfast was good
I will return to this grand place and can see that its a massive job to upgrade this wonderful building to bring it into the 2000,s but saying that the magnifisence of this land mark should not be slated but people should understand the massive project to retsore such a wonderful building

There are major issues with the Grand in Scarborough.
We arrived excited at the prospect of staying in such a fantastic looking hotel. The Grand is a dominating feature in most images of Scarborough, and gives the impression of quality, luxury and grandure. Inside, however a very different picture is portrayed.

We checked in and set off up to the 5th floor to our designated room. As we walked past other rooms the doors looked clean and everything was as we expected. When we finally arrived at our room, we were looking forward to getting in and having a a good chill out after walking in Dalby forest and around Scarborough. Once inside the room we were disgusted.

The first thing we noticed were the cups and spoons of the tea making facilities. These looked like they had been left over from previous guests and not cleaned. Then we started to look closely.
The unit on which the tea making facilities sat, was filthy. It looked like milk had been spilt and had gone underneath the glass top of the unit and never attempted to be cleaned.
The furniture itself is very dated, which is fine and gives it an old world feeling, but then to stick a cheap flat-pack wardrobe in the room, which had abviously been brought from somewhere else due to the plug socket cut out in the back, is just cheap.
Then we saw the wall around the door frame. Cracks and holes and pipes (shown in the photo).
There were wires poking through the ceiling, which looked ready for something installing.
The sheet on the bed was filthy, with patches of something which had been spilt on it, and holes. The carpet was dirty and needed a good hoover.
Then the en-suite shower room. Filthy. Limescale and mould everywhere (shown in the photos).
Finally there were just screw/rawlplug holes in the walls. This is obviously where things have been removed awaiting the refurbishment.

Granted we booked the room at a discount rate of £40, but this is still clearly not acceptable. This room should not have been available. The room should be closed until it is refurbed.

I simply don't understand how the room could have got THIS BAD. There is obviously something fundamentally wrong with the planning/organisation behind the refurbishment work going on at the Grand.

In the end we decided to complain where we were told there are no other rooms available. When we said the room is clearly not up to letting we were simply told it's a head office matter. We were given a refund, as we decided we couldn't stay in that room overnight. This refund however is delayed in going back onto a credit/debit card so we were left with no accommodation in Scarborough at 6pm.

This hotel is cheap, down at heel, but cheerful and excellent value for money. It's less than 10 mins walk from the station (downhill), you get a sunny hello at reception, a fairly dismal room (well you can't have dinner bed and breakfast for only £37.50 without some downside), a great breakfast, and a terrific clifftop location and views. And faded though its glory may be, it's still fun to come down that grand staircase (quicker than the lift too).

My husband and I stayed here for valentine weekend along with our brother and sister-in-law the room was filthy there was even food deposits left on the floor in large lumps and dusty fluff all around the edges of the carpet this room had not been cleaned in months, the bathroom was disgusting not only was it old and shabby the toilet had leaked at sometime and had a coating of dark brown all around the area where the collar is for the waste to go out and there was thick fluffy dust around under the sink, there was also a horrible smell in the room and the light bulb had blown in the main light. I went down and complained but was told there were no other rooms so I asked for a refund which I also couldn't have as I had booked through an agent so I asked for a light bulb and some air freshener and was told by the young man that he would deal with it. TO THIS DAY I AM STILL WAITING. The breakfast was ok apart from the huge cue you had to wait in each morning that went to the top of the staircase and we never ventured in for the evening meal so cannot comment. There is a definite lack of staff and I never saw or heard a hoover in the whole weekend that I was there or saw anyone polishing which is not normal by any standards, also you had to cue ages before you got served with a drink
