We've just returned from a one night stay in the Grand, party of 3 couples. Thank god we upgraded to Premier class, at least we had a little better standard than the majority....... Starting with the rooms, we stayed in room6 & while it was spacious the spa bath was replaced with a normal tub [not a crisis as after all we were only there for one night]. The bed however was very uncomfortable & each spring of the mattress was "felt" & "heard" whilst the bed linen was grubby & very old. Are there any window cleaners in Scarborough? if not then there's a business opportunity for someone.... We were glad to hear that for our meals we didn't have to queue with the bus tour masses due to our Premier upgrade & were guided to a different restaurant which was spacious & "queue free". The food was great despite what we had read in other reviews on this hotel, but unfortunately the staff were unable or un-willing to get us an alcoholic drink to accompany our meal, tea or coffee with breakfast but not your evening meal!!!! Staffing appears to be an issue in this hotel as there was only one barman behind the bar of a full hotel on a Saturday night & oh yes we could only use the cocktail bar as the other one was reserved for the "free bar" being offered to the bus tours. Granted this is an old hotel but due to its presence in this resort you would expect a higher standard of cleanliness & professionalism from its staff.

However, your comments regarding housekeeping have been passed to the relevant department for investigation. It is pleasing to know that you enjoyed the food in our premier restaurant; although, your comments regarding the beverage service have been passed to the General Manager for investigation. There are two Bars in operation at the hotel. One of which is for guests with our promotional offer at a certain time of the day; however, we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. My husband and I booked a 3 night stay at this hotel as a special offer but only stayed for 2 nights as we couldnt stand another night in a bed that I cannot begin to describe - I wouldnt let our westie sleep on it as hes used to far better !!!

Where do I start with such a very sorry state of a hotel ??

We were not welcomed by the reception staff - just told our floor number and given a key. Managed to find the lifts ( there were 2 but only 1 was working so we had to queue - just what us Brits are good at !!! ).

After a maze of corridors and doors we managed to find our 4th floor room - well my face must have fallen on to the filthy carpet in shock - I have never stayed in such a hotel room in all my life - I just couldnt believe what we had been given. Anyway we thought ok its just a room and we shall be out most of the time. The bedroom furniture didnt match -looked like it had been bought at a car boot sale, there were 2 dirty white mugs with 2 teaspoons inside ( no saucers ). There was also some ' spilt ' fluid underneath the glass top table that obviously hadnt been cleaned from previous drink making sessions. The sachets of coffee were disgusting - a make we had never even heard of and it was just awful - also no biscuits etc. There were only 5 channels on the teeny tiny portable tv ( ok we werent there to watch tv all day but still the picture quality was poor ).

The ensuite was so filthy that we both didnt take a shower in the 2 nights we stayed there, the dirt around the pipes, the top of the tap kept coming off everytime you turned it on, the grey lino around the bottom of the toilet was so stained in yellow wee that it made me feel sick. Everytime the person used their ensuite above us you could hear it running down the huge pipe in our ensuite - lovely !!!

The bedroom carpet was dirty and stained.

The bed was so uncomfortable that you could feel every spring wire in it digging into your body which ever way you turned - it was the pits and should have been burnt or chucked in a skip. I dread to think what it was like under the covers - I couldnt bring myself to look.

Breakfast came and what a shambles - 7.30am to 9.30am they told us; so we arrived at 9am and guess what hardly anything left. No juices at all, the eggs ( my husband ) said tasted like rubber, I would imagine that they had been out for ages just being kept warm. I only had cold toast ( they brought it to your table but it was cold ) so yet another complaint which was not acted upon. The tea served was stewed and again awful. Hardly any choice of cereal - the breakfast was very, very poor here indeed.

After our second night we just decided to come home early, however on this particular morning the breakfast was slightly improved, there was juice and very limited fruit - prunes - lovely !!! The mandarins were disgusting, the grapefruit not bad.

We checked out and yet again the reception staff never asked us if we'd had a nice stay, safe journey home etc... nothing, just took the key from us and that was it; as if we had never arrived and were invisible !!!

Would we stay here again - no.

Its such a shame as I can imagine in its hey day it would have been a Grand Hotel - but if they dont tend to the ' little ' niggly things, like light bulbs out, filthy windows looking out to the bay, the carpet and skirting boards all dirty from meal times then they wont attract people like us - Hopefully they will invest in a good vacuum cleaner and some good housekeeping skills.

Sad !!

Thank you for your review. We are most concerned regarding your comments and would like the opportunity to respond. We are sorry some areas of your stay did not meet your expectations. If you felt that staff were unhelpful, we can assure you this was not their intention. We do understand that the hotel has been experiencing technical problems regarding the customer lifts and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Our traditional décor means that often a wide range of fabrics are used to furnish our bedrooms; although, the hotel is currently undergoing refurbishment, which will ensure all rooms are of the same high standard. Your comments regarding housekeeping have been passed to the relevant department for investigation. Our breakfast buffets operate on a self service basis, allowing our guests more flexibility. Food is regularly re-stocked, and we do apologise if there was any delay in this area. We are sincerely sorry that some areas of your stay were not to your satisfaction and we hope this does not deter you from staying with Britannia Hotels in the future. Feedback is important to us as we use it to further improve our services and standards and we thank you for your comments.

I returned to Scarborough on one of my many visits to the Grand and again thoroughly enjoyed it , yes the rooms are tired but it is going through major refurbishment so you must allow for this . this magnificant building still has charm and elegance and the staircase is splendid , a great reminder of days gone by.
The meals are fantastic especially the breakfast and plenty of choice , the restaurant is bright and airy with wonderful views over the sea and harbour, the staff are extremely pleasant . there is a wonderful balcony around the first floor with settes where you can take your drinks if you want some alone time and also watch the comings and goings in the foyer.
There is a large sun terrace with terrific sea views , the Grand is within easy reach of the shops and beach altho hilly in places there are good pathways which zig zag down and in summer the finicular at the side of the hotel should be working [ please check ].
All in all this hotel is fantastic value for money , we shall be returning in May for one of our mini breaks, the price being what it is we can afford more than one. £99 each for 3 days [ weekend ] dinner , bed and breakfast and entertainment. BARGAIN !!!
