“Good Value Hotel”
Reviewed 25 July 2010

Stayed here for three nights with elderly parents the rooms were not bad they are a bit hit and miss what you get our parents room was very big our room was quite small but comfortable I would recommend you book a premier room and dining for extra £10.00 a day worth it food no better but less busy There is only two lifts as you can imagine they do get busy but you dont have to wait too long. The hotel is mainly used by coach companies so there are a lot of elderly people. The seagulls are rather noisey but you are by the sea you do get used to it .All in all good value for money impressive hotel good location.

we stayed for two nights with tesco club vouchers and got a fantastic deal. but on arrival we were put in the steamy basement where our room had no windows or ventilation. the room had been refurbished and looked lovely with a gorgeous big spa bath but the room stunk like it was damp. so i went to reception and was at 1st getting nowhere so i became more forceful and got a room on the 3rd floor. the room was pretty decent really with a fantstic jet spa bath which i lounged in for about 45 minutes on full blast. the evening meal on the first night just wasn't too clever some of it was ok but the chicken looked as though it was dried out so i had some beef which was so so. the cheese and biscuit selection was fabulous and plenty of gateaux' for the ladies or sweet toothed guys. the breakfast wasnt too bad although the bacon was pretty soggy and sausages looked deep fried, everything else was pretty good. the second nights evening meal was much better but i made a point of going in early. the bar prices arnt too bad especially with a double being only a quid more than a single. the entertainment was ok if you like the caberet sort of thing and bingo...i found the most comfortable huge leather chair and sofa for my wife and just watched the people go by and had a much better laugh at some of the antics around us...(nothing too boisterous just the residents) and had a great weekend out of what started as a bit of a let down. the parking outside the hotel costs £6 a day or free for disabled , but is free overnight after 6pm for all. the hotel probably does need a re vamp in parts but its not as bad as its painted , maybe some people expect the earth , but if you get a cheap sunday night break off them and done expect 5 star then just go and enjoy yourself, maybe when booking demand a room with a window also it doesnt cost ant more unless you want a sea view which does cost about an extra tenner.

I have not actually stayed here but have attended quite a few functions during the month of Sept over variopus years. Particular grand (pardon the pun] was the water fall we watched one year with water cascading through the ceiling via a friends room and a cupboard a floor or three up!! My wife, who is a housekeeper for a large top draw hotel, had a look at one or two of the rooms and was appalled!. The buffet was appaling and not enough for a set number of guests.

i wish i'd read the reviews before we booked, we were put in a room with no window and stifling heat as were other members of our group, apparently it dosen't break health and safety according to scarborough council. i just hope there's never a fire, it's like being in the engine room on a ship. we came out of our room one day to find 6 or 7 fully loaded cages along the corridor. we kept asking for another room but were continually told the place was full. when we were offered another one (room 133) it was just as bad if not worse, there was an awful smell , seagulls nesting on the window sill, awful buzzing and vibration noise, so the next one was room 215, no shower, big damp patches on wall and ceiling, and to get ventilation in the room you have to put a big block of wood in the window to hold it up. the staff seem resigned to the fact that people are going to complain. the manager is useless.

scarborough is a great seaside town.
we booked four nights at the grand hotel and checked out after only two nights.
the double room was like a broom cupboard and the bathroom was dirty, the shower leaked onto the floor.
the mattress was very lumpy and uncomfortable.
breakfast was either greasy fry up or watery scrambled egg.
dinner was no better ( why would you serve mince and gravey ) in a self service restaurant.
it felt as though you were being herderd around like cattle.
the staff have a dont care attitude.
we couldnt wait to leave.
would never,never go back

If you book to stay at this hotel, you need to be aware that there are several floors of "bedrooms" below ground level. So no natural light, no ventilation, and no escape in the event of a fire breaking out. Also, there are some "bedrooms" on the upper floors of this hotel that are the same. I had the misfortune to be allocated one of these. My first (and only) night of what was a 4 night stay was spent on the 5th floor in a newly refurbished cupboard. No natural light, no ventilation, and no escape in the event of a fire. I awoke de-hydrated, nauseous, and with breathing difficulties, having spent the night in a temperature I estimate was in the mid 70's. I had to go for a walk round outside the hotel before I felt well enough to return to my "room" for a shower. 3 requests for a room change were blanked by reception, so my company found me alternative accomodation.
I heard the food described as transport caff style. Believe me, any transport caff serving food of the standard served in this hotel would be bankrupt before you could say pig swill.
The only positive thing I can say in this review is that the Grand is a beautiful building in a great location.

I have stayed in lots of hotels from 2-5 star but this is easily the worst. Our room was practically in the basement and did not even have a window, it was like sleeping in a cupboard. The hotel itself in in serious need of updating, it is very shabby and smells like a nursing home.
Breakfast was scary, like a rugby scrum, don't know why because it was awful congealed food.
I think I dont have to say I will never set foot in it again.
