“cheap warm and friendly”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 November 2010

We booked for one night BB and Evening meal for two £49 the total. Very good value although we didn't know we were booked into a dungeon as one other guest described it,........... given that my partner carn't even get into a lift,..........., the thought of staying in a room without any windows freaked him, however, they accomodated us on the the 3rd floor no sea veiw but what the heck. The spa bath was brilliant with constant hot water. No hairdryer or phones in rooms. The drinks were pub prices the food was hot and ok nothing that special apart from nearly putting brandy sauce in soup dish for starters!! no labels!! Staff very friendly and other guests very entertaining. We would definatly go again but maybe pay the premium rate for a sea veiw as it has stunning views of the whole coast line. Parking £6 for 24 hours in front of hotel if you can get a space.

I struggle to understand why people beat this hotel down, my family go nearly every year in the month of november for the tinsel and turkey dinner, and from walking in the hotel to leaving we have a great time, good room service, always clean, fresh bedding, willing to assist in every way possible, nice jaccuzzie baths and warm showers, spacious rooms, sea view, tv in every room and comfy beds, tea and coffee making facilities. Staff are always friendly and make sure they meet every individuals requirements to the highest standards, we stayed part of the premier dining, both breakfast and evening meals were of a high standard with a variety of choice, self service so people could get what they pay for instead of limited food, variety of puddings and waiters/waitresses on hand if in need of help. elevators to assist the elderly and wheelchair users, variety of bars with a mixture of different drinks from lager, beer, bitter to wines and spirits. beautiful christmas decoration up, beautiful long staircases and spacious seating areas with elather setees and chairs, local to town centre and other pubs, sea front. I went with a group of 11 and all found the weekend highly enjoyable, relaxing, comfortable and fun, i honestly dont understand what people find wrong, i would reccommend this hotel to anybody who is out for a good, relaxing weekend instead of wanting to dine with the queen. YOU MUST GOOOOO!

I was another one fobbed off with a "dungeon room" - no window and in the bowels of the basement. The room itself was OK but felt very claustrofobic. It's a rabbits warren of passages and staircases down there which does however mean plenty of exit routes. Not that cheap either £94 for two nights BB and evening meal.
Requested several times to get a room with a window but always told "fully booked" evenwhen there were three coaches lined up outside taking away the previous lot!
Food like school food - queue up and help yourself to what's left! But very good views of the bay and the place still retains some grandeur

Due to the nature of the Victorian building all our 361 rooms vary in shape and size and we do have 40 internal rooms. The internal rooms are clean, modern and functional albeit without a window. The only way to guarantee a room with a window and sea view is to upgrade to a Premier room

I have just stayed at The Grand Hotel at Scarborough Monday to Friday for Turkey and Tinsel.
All the facilities at the hotel were poor from the food right down to the staff.
Considering it was Turkey and Tinsel, we had a quiz every night and bingo and not much else.
Luckily the people staying in the Hotel were a good crowd so we made our own entertainment.
I have been to many Hotels for holidays and Turkey and tinsels but this was the worst.

very clean and newly refurbished. Staff excellent, friendly and helpful. Food excellent
lots of choice, hot and tastey Sevrice very good nearly all the staff are local people.
Hotel very warm and comfortable, especially important for a winter break. Good central
location for shops and walks. Drink prices good especially wine at £9.50 bottle, for a
good quality drink. All in all an excellent short holiday, my friends and I will be booking
again very soon. The evening entertainment was a real treat.

After reading some of the reviews I was not looking forward to our stay in this hotel, When we arrived we found the staff friendly and helpful. We didnt have one of the basement rooms so I dont know what there like, we had a room on the thirrd floor which was clean and the bed was comfortable the bathroom had no shower but the water was allways hot. We did find the self service for the food to be a bit of a hassle but if you time it right its fine, and you can get as much food as you want! The staff in there where very friendly and Susan was cheerful and helpful The lifts can get a bit crowded so if your in any way disabled I would advise a ground floor room if possible I would go backto the hotel and area is great

Firstly the positive side of our trip, the rooms were clean, spacious and well appointed. All the staff we met were polite, friendly and helpful.Plenty of entertainment if you wanted something to do in an evening though I think they could cater for different tastes other than dancing or bingo!
I was shocked to find that our rooms (-3 level) were below the ground floor of the building and had no windows. Nowhere is this mentioned on their website. It's a very strange feeling and I certainly wouldn't go back there. The breakfast was a big disappointment, there was little variety on the cooked buffet, bacon, eggs, sausage, fried bread, beans. No brown bread, tomatoes or mushrooms and at 8.30a.m. (we were told when we could have breakfast, there were sittings) only mandarin oranges, yogurt and jam on the "continental" breakfast side. It's completely self service, even the drinks. Very, very busy ...so why not employ a few more people??? The staff there are doing a brilliant job, hope management appreciate it.

The only way to guarantee a room with a window is to upgrade to a Premier room which have sea views and are generally larger than our standard rooms.

Both our restaurants are self service and at peak times queues do form. To help alleviate this we allocate times for large groups, however for all other guests meal times are flexible.
