Description: Calf Sanctuary Cafe At present we are only open Fri Sat and Sunday but our hours will extend over the summer period. We are mainly an animal rescue sanctuary and after 7 years of hard work we are finally moving our sanctuary to whitby and will be open eventually to the public. Our vegan cafe is not for profit, every penny (other than staff wages) goes directly back to the rescues. x

We visited the Calf cafe on a cold November day and felt instantly at home in it's welcoming, cosy interior. The menu was varied and reasonably priced with everything suitable for vegans! There were several delicious sounding daily specials on offer as well as the main menu. I opted for a traditional burger with chips and salad and my husband chose the all day vegan breakfast. Both meals were served in good time and were very tasty. For dessert, we both opted for the warm chocolate fudge cake with cream and it was divine! Worth a visit for this alone!
The Calf cafe is the kind of friendly place that vegans and non-vegans alike will feel comfortable and enjoy good food. If you're in Scarborough at lunchtime, this is the place to eat!

I discovered this place, whilst walking back from a day at the beach, on the outside, looks quite dainty and intriguing. The inside decor is quite cute, and charming. The annoying thing about this place, was everytime someone opened the door, all the bells and jangly things that were tied to the door, would shudder really loud, so kinda made you jump if you had your back to the door.

I really, really wanted to like this place, but sorry guys the food was just tasteless. I had the vegetable jalfrezi which was accompanied with rice and a chappati. There was no taste what so ever, the jalfrezi seemed to have too much cumin seeds added to it, and the rice was just terrible, in fact I've had better from a microwavable packet. I only picked the potatoes from the food and had a glass of water. My sister wasnt too happy with her meal either, which was jacket potatoe, cheese and beans. The cheese was obv vegan and it left a lot to be desired.

If your palate is used to tasty food and good value for money, then I suggest you save yourself a visit from this place. Whilst Im not vegan, I do like vegetarian dishes, and im willing to try new things, as long as the food tastes of something at least, rather than feeling like your chewing a piece of rotten cardboard.

Overall it wasnt cheap and I was dissapointed that no-one had asked if we were happy, or if there was anything else that we needed, Its something Im used to when eating at any kind of establishment. Even when we sent our plates virtually full, no-one had asked for feedback.

When we left this place, we just went somewhere else for proper food. It was disheartening that we had wasted our money.

Whilst I appreciate everyone that works at this place are volunteers and good for all of you, that give your time to help others, unfortuantely places like this will only die out. Meat is on this earth for a reason and its there to be eaten. :) It would be nice if the resources and money could be saved and spent on something else like poverty.

Finally we were able to visit the fantastic CALF cafe in Scarborough. It was everything I had thought it would be and more! Delicious food - toasted vegan cheese sandwich and Banoffee sundae. There were loads of things to choose from, spoiled for choice. The cafe itself is quirky, fun, comfortable and cosy, loved it - guess you can see that from my comments! The only thing that I don't like is that it is too far away for regular visits! Keep on the good work CALF - you are compassionate and completely wonderful in every way. Oh and PS our dog was made very welcome too which is a real bonus. XXX

Came here on a Sunday 30 mins before closing but the staff were really accommodating and made me a lush vegan burger. The milkshakes are also phenomenal! Just a shame it was on winter opening times, could have eaten here every day! Thanks!

We really enjoyed our two visits to Calf during our week's holiday in Scarborough. We had the full vegan breakfast which we could not fault in any way, also tried the superb chocolate cake (don't know how they make it so moist and yummy as in our experience vegan cakes can be on the dry side) and the knickerbocker glory made with home made ice cream and lots of fruit- absolutely yummy! How fantastic also that the profits all go to support a local animal sanctuary. We highly recommend this lovely cafe.
