We bought this two night stay through Groupon and after reading some of the reviews on here, we were more than a little sceptical about the hotel.
On arrival we were greeted by friendly and helpful staff and given our room - 237. Upon entering the room we were pleasently surprised at the modern decor, the size of the room and en suite and the view of the sea (which cost £10 more, but was definately worth it). The room was well equipped with a large wardrobe, the biggest and comfiest bed, as well as a two seater leather sofa, which enabaled us to admire the sea view.
There was constant hot water and the shower was powerful.
Breakfast was very nice, lots of choice including cooked, cereal and a small selection of fruit.
The corridors leading to the rooms were slightly dated and could do with a freshen up and the windows were slightly dirty (which is obviously to be expected due to the hotels location).
Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to return.

We have just had a groupon deal to the Clifton Hotel £79.00 for two people for two nights, included a bottle of wine on arrival one evening meal and two breakfasts. We quite often pay £70 - £90 for 1 nights B & B.
Our room on the third floor was sufficient but we asked if they had one with a sea view, For an extra £10 per night we moved to room 130 (1 st floor). This was a large room with front and corner sea views, it had a decent sized bathroom with spa bath, and a very large and extremely comfortable bed. The room and bathroom were clean but not pristine. The sea views would have been greatly enhanced if the windows had been clean.

On the evening that an entertainer was playing keyboard and singing in the bar the noise level in the bedroom was quite high.

There were decorators on our floor re papering and painting and it looks as though a large proportion of the hotel is in need of an upgrade. The dining room and reception area and bar were pleasant enough but some of the furniture was considerably worn. The two breakfasts that we had were enjoyable, the evening meal was very disappointing. However there were two coach parties staying and they were saying how good the evening meals had been.
The hotel is in a great location and in its heyday must have been a popular choice, the great war poet Wilfred Owen even stayed here. However, the painted exterior of the hotel is peeling, its original entrance no longer used, the windows are really dirty and so first impressions are disappointing.

The thing for us, was that it was a BARGAIN break and you need to ask yourself why? The staff were very pleasant and helpful and just around the corner is a brilliant Real Ale pub called The North Riding Brew Pub with a great range of real ale and cider and very good pub grub at tremendous prices. What more do you need for a cheap break.

We've just returned from a three night stay and were really sorry to leave! We had room 238, which has a fabulous view over the north bay, so much so that we never drew our curtains! The room was clean apart from the windows, which must be very difficult to keep sparkling so near to the sea. The bed was very comfy and had lovely white bedding, which was spotless. The bath and shower were both very good - a few of the floor tiles were a bit cracked, but there was plentiful hot (very hot) water at all times of day and night. I wish my bedroom at home was as big! The breakfast buffet was terrific. We paid £95 for the room for three nights, a total bargain. Yes, it could do with a bit of tlc here and there but we would definitely return. If anyone wants a boutique hotel with flat screen tellies and trendy decor, this would not be for them but we loved the old place. Should mention the staff too, they're lovely!

Arrived Monday 15th tired and hungry after approx seven/eight hours on the coach, left 9am Tuesday 16th...on a train back to Oxford at £106 puunds and £5 taxi...WHY you may ask, all the negative comments that have been left recently are still there...shabby, tired and unloved hotel.
I was given Room 370 Standard Doiuble but as a single traveller had to pay £72 extra.
You could not get two people in the room.
Double bed pushed up against the wall meant if you did have someone else in the bed they would have to climb over you to use the toilet. The windows were rotten and the wood just broke away, the glass panes did not sit into the surrounds so there was a gap in all the panes and holes in the glass. The wallpaper was ripped in places. Mirror in shower room broke, shower door just about hanging on its hinges, if you sat on the loo your head was in the shower.
The towel was fraying and had holes in it, the sheets were marked. Dinner was a basic choice with what appeared to be a skeleton staff , and it was self service. Breakfast was ok, not enough staff on bar duty, I asked to be changed to another room, but was told they were full.
I left the tour, arranged for taxi to take me to the station and had a pleasant journey home on the train al beit £111 worse off...NO I wont be going back.

Room Tip: See the room before you book - probably impossible, but hopefully you will not be as disappointed as...

We have recently returned from a break at the Clifton Hotel in Scarborough. The outside of the Hotel is in need of some TLC as regards to paintwork , but the reception, bar areas and dining rooms are okay. The corridors leading to the bedrooms are quite scruffy and off putting as you go to your room. The bedroom we had was quite small, clean and very warm. The bathroom was clean, apart from some of the tiles needing re-grouting. The staff worked very hard and were always helpful and very pleasant. We were on half board, and both evening meals and breakfasts were very good. The choice was good and the food was hot. I would be happy to stay here again.
