stayed saturday after paying £29 for 2, recieved a lovely chicken, gammon meal on arrival which was lovely, the room was small but very clean and freshly decorated, we never saw any mess at all, the hotel is alittle tired but clean! The staff were lovely, breakfast the next day my husband found great i was feeling slighty rough after a good night in Scarbourgh, were we found the turks head a good friendly little bar with live music. we would return again for a nights break

Well.... Are you sitting comfortable then I'll begin .. The problem with this hotel is that it is nothing like the images on the website . The hotel is in a good location but is in grave need of TLC. The rooms are filthy and in need of updating . A little bit of hoovering and dusting wouldn't go a miss. Carpets in the main corridors are tired and worn. While we were waiting for a refund we overheard another guest complaining about their room saying that previous guest had left a calling card in the toilet . The staff tried to upgrade our rooms but on inspection were worse than the ones we had been given in the first place. The staff did their best but can't work a miracle. Need I go on ?.... Avoid like the plague .

Stayed here for 3nights in Feb,very pleased as we only played £ 29 per night and that included breakfast which might I say was great, plenty to eat from cereal to fruit to toast and as much fry up as you can handle, tea, coffee and fruit juices,OK it does need a bit of work to tidy it up a bit but the staff were friendly and the bar area was lovely we sat for hours drinking and playing dominoes ha ha,the room was basic but had a lovely see view bed was comfy pillows were great and shower was powerful,we got clean towels every morning.if I had a gripe it would have been nice to have the room hoovered as it was a bit messy and also dusty round lights and fan in bathroom, but this hasn't put us off we will go again it was a bargain for what we payed

My wife and I booked to go to the clifton on the 15jan2014 having been to this hotel many times even taken coach parties there,we arrived to find the hotel locked, after 10min! Someone came and asked us in so he could ring another hotel, the hotel itself smelt fusty like it had not been used for a time,he asked us to make our way to the royal hotel that Brittania also owned, the entrance carpets need a clean all up the stairs was disgusting, our room was not sea view that we had booked I had to find a length of wood to make the sach window secure, staff were falling out,the manager a young man was having a do with a small stocky man about moving table and chairs of the stage for the nights entertainment, breakfast was on a saucer ,water was dripping on lights that were in the window from above our whole stay was rubbish the older manager would not give me his name,I asked for on our arrival customer care was complete rubbish, have been there and the clifton many times never again BRTTANIA have lost the plot, have tried to speak to someone a Julie rang me manager at the clifton said my claim is with the royal hotel the royal say it's with the clifton hotel it's impossible to contact anyone at Brittania they just keep passing the buck we moved out and went to the pavillion in York HEAVEN I suggest they go there for lessons no more Brittania for us

We have stayed at this hotel 5 times now.it is run down and needs a refurb but theres something about it.we ve loved going there but this time one of the receptionists was so rude(the one with her hair up).had to say that because the other lady is very nice, and the man on reception at night is lovely.on our other stays there we have never been told to leave our key on going out.I dont have a problem with this but the rude receptionist spoke to us like we were something on the bottom of her shoe.Needless to say i was fuming.we had already booked another weekend for 2 weeks time, guess i will just have to be rude too lol.other guests we re also complaining about her arrogant attitude.the breakfast is lovely and plentiful, the rest of the staff are very friendly but you get what you pay for.

Room Tip: room 248 very small with small bed,not really like a double room.

Just leaving the Clifton hotel as I'm writing this review, I feel happier leaving than I did arriving after I saw the state of my room! We booked as part of a national coach trip so had no choice of hotel etc, we stayed in a double room which was small and poky with awful decor which would have been tolerable if it wasn't so filthy!! I understand that all rooms may not be occupied at this time of year and therefore wouldn't need to be cleaned on a daily basis, but this room hasn't seen a cleaner for weeks, it wasn't covered by a thin layer of dust, it was more like a shag pile carpet!! Disgusting!!! The carpet was also thick with dust, there was coffee stains up the wall, the bulbs were out and hadn't been replaced and the mattress was like sleeping on barbed wire! Cleanliness is everything in a hotel, well it is to me anyway and that is why I will never return.

We stayed at the Clifton hotel with friends for our 42 wedding anniversary and what a disappointment. Very poor food, service and cleanliness. We've stayed at this hotel when English Rose ran it and we've had some good stays there, but since Britannia hotels have taken it over it's really gone down hill which is a real shame because we really did enjoy our time there in the past. We will never go back there again.
