Have just returned from a three night stay with national holidays. On arrival the lady that checked us in was rather clever with me when i didn't catch what she said abt evening meal times, but after that found the rest of the staff very friendly and helpful. We had a nice room on the ground floor which had patio doors and a small seating area outside which would be lovely in summer. We found the food always hot and edible.Would we stay here again yes

Having paid £20 extra for a Superior room with a sea view I thought this might mean my wife and could enjoy a decent cup of coffee in our room enjoying the view. Unfortunately the coffee provided in the room by Britannia was undrinkable, and I asked staff at Reception if they had an alternative brand. I was told it was the same coffee throughout the Britannia group, and that even the staff brought their own to drink at work!
This might appear a small criticism, but I believe it reflects badly on Britannia hotels when they cannot provide a decent cup of coffee for their guests, and other people mentioned that the coffee was the same poor standard in the dining room.
As previous reviewers have stated, the hotel could do with much needed investment as carpets on the stairway are threadbare in places, and the furniture in the rooms have seen better days.
The hotel has many positives including free parking, a large bright dining room ,and pleasant helpful staff
Just don't forget to take your own coffee when you decide to visit!

Other people also mentioned that the coffee was the same in the dining room

Room Tip: Ask for one of the larger refurbished rooms

Just left the Clifton hotel after a two night stay, even though it wasn't terrible the rooms are dated and in urgent need off some tlc.

The staff are just plain rude especially the lady on arrival and was not helpful at all, also a cleaning lady after my "good morning" comment resulted in me being looked at like something she had stood in.

The location on the cliff top is totally amazing and beautiful with stunning views day and night whatever the weather.

would i stay here again? Probably if i got it for the same price

May wife and I stayed for 1 night on a Groupon cheap deal and it was well worth the money. For the price we had bed breakfast evening meal for 2 and a bottle of Shiraz. All for £40.00.

The first room was small and tired so we asked to be moved and the receptionist who is a star moved us to room 128. Excellent room nice bathroom all very clean, bedding spotless and great pillows which is rare.

The evening meal was basic but good hearty food and the breakfast was excellent. The staff on reception and in restaurant were first class and evening porter was friendly.

We will return when we can stay for 2 or 3 nights. Scarborough sea front has improved although town centre has way too many charity shops for the size of town.

All in all a great night away from home and weather was kind as we'll.

Room Tip: Ask for first floor sea view as these seem to be recently updated.

I stayed at the Clifton Hotel via a 4 day coach break with National Holidays, the staff are pleasant in all Departments from reception to cleaners, at this hotel I don't think there are any problems with the staff but the hassle they are put through is due to a shortage of much needed investment in the rooms people stay in.
The restaurant area was once a ballroom and is ideal and spacious to easily accommodate all the guests, the food was very good at the evening meal, the breakfast menu too was excellent, all food was hot, and hot plates were available, used plates were soon removed and areas kept clean by the waiters and waitresses, the chef gave regular visits to ensure food didn't go short, there was always plenty of fresh food being added.
We had a room that had been re-decorated, it was pleasant but had no opening windows in the bay, so all the moisture at this time of the year from the bathroom was condensing on the single glazed window, we even tried keeping the bathroom door closed at all times but still condensation constantly ran down onto the window sill which was so nicely painted and decorated, a shame really, when I asked the reception staff they did offer another room if I wanted or the use of an oscillating fan, which I used, here again I can appreciate the staff are trying to do their best in reception to resolve the issue.
Another annoying problem with the room was the creaking from the floor of the bay on the room above, it was impossible to get to sleep until the folk above had gone to bed, it was better than any alarm clock the next morning too, the reason for this may be that the ceilings and walls had been plaster boarded with no expansion mastic, and were flexing to the joists above.
Both the bathroom and the bedroom didn't seem to have been cleaned during the stay but just had the waste bins emptied, and the bed sheets etc put into place, the floor was not vacuumed and no toilet roll replacement was left as a spare.
The sheets and towels were clean on arrival and the bed was comfortable, perhaps a notice asking visitors to leave towels on the bath if they should want them changing, within reason, may be helpful.
The hotel has an ideal location and probably on a much more pleasant bay than the Grand Hotel depending on what sort of atmosphere you like.
All in all a good stay staff very pleasant, I don't blame any of the staff here for any untidiness in the building itself it seems they all try to do their best, but probably the hotel group could do with far more investment, this may lead to less stress to all present staff and the unwanted comments they have to deal with.
I understand investment may be happening in smaller stages, but probably may need to be pushed, to higher levels if possible.

The hotel was always warm and homely and the shower and bath worked very well.

Would stay again, friendly great food. Get some money into it Brittania a good hotel with good staff look after them, and they will look after you.

Room Tip: Have a look at the room, it may be worth not having a sea view but a refurbished room instead
