“Great hotel”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

I stayed two nights at the Clifton Hotel in Scarborough with my three year old great grandson. The staff was really helpfull and nothing was too much trouble for them and they are good with the children. We was lucky to have a sea view and the rooms was clean and the beds very comfortable.we had breakfast and evening meal but the second night we ate out as there wasn't much to choose from from a great grandma

Room Tip: Bay windows are nice and sunny

Well what can I say, after reading the reviews we stayed there for 2 nights with an open mind. we booked parking in advance which was well worth the fee as it was allocated and waiting for us on arrival. The staff were very nice and helpful and yes the rooms were tired and in need of a serious update and clean but we loved the location and as its part of the Britannia brand and twinned with the Grand we knew what to expect having stayed at the Grand previously. The breakfast was hot and was ok far better than the Grand which was a bonus so all in all not bad, we will stay again hopefully by then they will have spent some money on the hotel to bring it up to a decent standard. All in all a lovely 2 day break.

Room Tip: Try and get the new rooms near the car park.

My girlfriend and I went to Scarborough on my birthday and stayed here for one night and please believe me we were glad it was for one night.

The hotel it's self looks amazing on the cliff over looking the sea, and when you get into the lobby it looks ok and well run.

The staff were friendly and helpful but that's where it all ends for us sorry to say.

The lift is something from a horror movie and made my girlfriend feel somewhat enclosed.

The room was dated and small and the house keeping could of done with learning how to clean a room before we stayed there. The bed was hard and very uncomfortable. The only thing that was great was the view from the window.

Sorry but wouldn't recommend this to young people or couples.

To sum it up then.... It's beautiful to look at and the views are second to none from the rooms. But it's dated and the rooms could do with cleaning much better and updating the furniture and amenities.

I have just stayed 2 nights with my daughter 1st and 2nd August and we were very lucky to be allocated one of the new rooms just at the back of the car park, it said it had a sea view, it did just but when the cars were there it blocked your view, this didn't bother us.
The room was brand new with flat screen TV , tea and coffee facilities and a bath. It was lovely and clean, comfortable beds with the added bonus of patio doors which opened onto a shared area and seating.
The breakfast was also good, we will definitely go back and probably ask of the same room

It was probably an omen to see a disabled lady crying at reception when she was told that there was no parking as she had not pre-booked it.
We were given room 116, which was like a cell with one extremely small window high up in the corner of the room, as it was summer it was incredibly hot and bizzarely you had to climb over a bed to get to the seating area.
When I went to reception to complain they already knew what I was going to say.
We were given a room on the third floor with a fantastic view of the bay, albeit through very dirty windows.
The carpet was stained as was the ceiling where the paper was peeling and a damp patch was highlight by a black mold, the small couch was so dirty we covered it with a towel before sitting on it.
Not that we used the towel in the bathroom, as the shower was filthy, the toilet came with a hand written note explaining how to flush it.
The windows were painted shut, with just one small gap, with glass on two sides of the room it was roasting.
But we had no option to stay, as we passed reception to go out another couple were argueing about having to park a mile away.
We were woken very early by the sourching temperature of the room, not that we slept very well in a rather small double.
So we were early to breakfast which was absolutely terrible, tea and coffee came from a grubby flask, the 'cooked' breakfast was simply nasty, uncooked bacon and dried up sausage, watery scrabbled eggs, and tinned mushrooms.
So we left, passing another couple complaining at reception to find somewhere to have a proper breakfast which we did. Taking an earlier train home so we could have a shower.
This is my first venue onto this site, as I believe often people are too quick to complain, however I can say that the whole experience was dreadful.
The hotel is a disgrace, walking up the stairs you can see paper, paint and plaster falling of the cracked walls, yes its an old building but is there any excuse for the filthyness of the rooms?
We went to see a concert which was great, pity about the hotel, and it wasn't cheap.

Room Tip: It may be near the openair theatre but go somewhere a little further away

I was a little on the nervous side of staying here after reading some reviews, but was only for one night as took Grand daughter to the Little Mix concert in the open air theatre, so this hotel was in very easy reach of were we wanted to be. I rang the hotel to book parking space which was nicely waiting for us on arrival. Yes the hotel is a little dated in its décor, but we had the most loveliest room 494 on the forth floor which was the one with the spiral from outside, Grand daughter thought she was a princess for the weekend.. booked twin with sea view, this room was classed as executive suite on the card I was given, and must say we were not disappointed, breakfast was really very good with an excellent choice. I had no problem with this hotel and would stay here again.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are better

Stayed for 1 night in July. Clean, but the hotel has clearly seen better days. I'm sure at its peak it would have been the place to stay, but sadly in need of a serious makeover. We were in a room on the very top floor, spacious and the beds were quite comfy, still a bit on the tatty side. However, the staff were friendly and helpful, the views of the bay were fabulous and the breakfast was quite nice.We only paid a small amount to stay here, so I suppose as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.
Lovely old building that needs lots of money spending on it to bring it up to scratch.
