“Beautiful cottage but access road a bit scary”
Reviewed 11 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

The cottage was stunning. The bedroom absolutely massive, and super views from all the windows. It has everything you could possibly need. Melanie the owner was absolutely lovely and very helpful. After our sat nav took us down many country roads, and over single track roads with hairpin bends and hills like you wouldn't believe, we ended up having to stop and ask for directions - it is not well signposted. Dont rely on the sat nav to guide you there as it only takes you to the general vicinity - best to ask Melanie in advance for directions. No mobile phone signal in the area at all either so we couldn't even call ahead for guidance. It turned out, when we stopped to ask for directions, we were only a short distance from the cottages but the road to it was very narrow - single file only, with an extremely steep hill downwards - so steep that I really doubted my wee micra would get back up it. Thankfully Melanie gave us directions to Scarborough going the other way, where the road was a lot easier.

If I had only one negative comment to make, it would be the internet access, or rather, complete lack of it. Normally internet access is not top of my list and I can completely do without it, but I was taking a working holiday, and had some very important work I needed to complete within a timescale, while I was there. I checked with Melanie before booking to make sure they had wifi and internet access so could connect remotely to my work pc,, but the connection was abysmal. the router was in a different cottage and I assume the stone walls must make the signal weak. We just could not get the laptop to connect to internet at all, although it did connect to a very weak wifi signal. I ended up trailing Scarborough with the laptop in the car, trying to find somewhere with free wifi.

My only other slight niggle, and this is absolutely no fault of the owner, was that the other cottages appear to have been taken by either one large family, or a group of families holidaying together, and they simply took over the entire outside space. There is a picnic table outside each cottage, but the area is completely open. Our table was constantly being used by the other guests, and the games room was never free - they were sitting in there every evening taking up all the seats while drinking, and made you feel as if you were intruding if you dared go in. We ventured in one evening to pick up a leaflet or two and they just glared at us until we left.

So in a nutshell, if you're looking for a nice quiet holiday, just a stones throw from some lovely pubs for meals, and very close to Scarborough, if you're not bothered about internet or mobile phone access and aren't bothered about using the games room, then this is a fabulous holiday cottage and I would happily recommend it.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you had difficulty with the internet, however I would have happily had a look at this issue for you, had you informed me of the issue during your stay. We provide directions for all of our guests on our website, however from our experience guests prefer to use a Sat Nav and different Sat Nav systems bring guests to our property from varying routes, unfortunately the way you arrived was via a winding hill with some single lanes, and the route we provide only has a single lane for a maximum of 200metres to our entrance, and no steep hills. Mobile phone networks in rural locations are unfortunately never great, however we do get reception from O2 and Vodafone, albeit patchy at times. The games room facility is shared between the cottages, and so people do use it and gather as a family to play games and meet up with other guests staying in the other cottages. I am pleased you enjoyed your time in the cottage, we aim to provide a nice environment for guests to return to after a hectic day out and about, and feel they can relax in comfort. Many thanks.
