“Slightly Disappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 December 2012

I have stayed here previously, enjoying my stay very much. Unfortunately this time I was a little disappointed with my stay.

I checked in mid-afternoon, outside it was freezing cold, as was my bedroom, a nice touch would have been to put the heating on some time before hand so at least the room didn't resemble an ice box, also even with the towel rail turned on in the bathroom, it was freezing, I was quite reluctant to get up to visit the bathroom during the night.

No real complaints about the actual room, crisp clean sheets and towels, and a well stocked tea/coffee tray. The bathroom could have done with a bit of a refurb, bath panel hanging off and a leaky cold tap when it was turned on.

I dined in the bar on the evening of my visit and the food was delicious, as was the substantial breakfast on the morning of departure.

Can't remember if I mentioned it in my last review, but I do consider a 10 o'clock check out to be rather early.

With a largish group trying to find somewhere for a single night 'out of season' at a reasonable price was harder than we all thought, however this place fitted the bill and provided a comfortable enough night at £25 per head, so can't complain and certainly better than a load of Travelodges we've stayed in.

Big plus being the off street plentiful parking.

Given it was -3 to -4 overnight outside, can't complain about the room temperatures or the near instance hot water at a good pressure - something many places get wrong.

Even though there were 120+ at a private function on the floor below us, never heard a thing

Room Tip: We had one at the 'rear' overlooking the off street parking, so it was very quiet. Couple of...

I found the hotel on the visit yorkshire website so thought we'd give it a try.Location is opposite the railway station and handy for shops etc.The actor Charles Laughton was born in the hotel as the plaque outside states. We wanted somewhere clean and inexpensive and the Victoria was both, we were warmly greeted on arrival and the owner/host served us a freshly cooked breakfast each day which was more than ample and her manner very pleasant. Our room was large and bright facing the front of the hotel; yes there was some traffic noise but it didn't disturb us. Ok our double room was two single beds pushed together but it was perfectly comfortable.
I agree with other reviewers that The Victoria looks more like a bar with rooms. We stayed Mon and Tue so it was very quiet in the evening, more lively in the afternoons. We were able to use the side door and this felt more private and there was a lift which my partner needed to our second floor room.
Things I liked
Large bright room
Freshly cooked and tasty breakfast
Near to shops etc.
Clean room
Value for money
Free parking

Things that could have been better

Loose fixtures in bathroom
Tray needed for tea/coffee things
Water in shower a bit too hot, couldn't turn it down.

I think the Victoria is responding to the negative posts on Tripadvisor and making changes;. we liked it and would definately stay again

Stayed here as part of a last minute plan, for the price we payed, we were expecting luxury, staff were scruffy, un pleasant, and didn't know their right from left foot.
The room was scruffy, damp and smelt of smoke, the TV didn't work, the bathroom was dirty, the breakfast was cheap and not very nice, the only positive would be the girls that served our breakfast were friendly and pleasant. other than that, would never dream of staying here again.

Group of us stayed for 1 night. Hotel was basic and dated in places, new stair carpet is a must and a few things in rooms need sorting, towel rail hangin off and cold water tap not working. Tea/coffee making facilities were good, breakfast was good and beds comfy, bit of traffic noise but was expecting that and had to have window open because of heat which made it worse. Staff were friendly and bar served a decent pint. Long walk to beach but bang opposite train station. Rooms were clean. Would stay here again as it's cheap and cheerful but don't expect the ritz, you get what you pay for!!
