We've been visiting the Ambassador for over 10 years now and as soon as we step inside it's like we never left. Despite the substantial refurbishments that have taken place - in Reception (which I'm not too sure about), the bar and dining room (greatr improvements) and rooms (not much expense spared), it is the friendly staff that make this our favourite hotel in Scarborough (and we've stayed at a few, including the truly awful Travelodge - never, ever, again). Yoiu know that you're going to be looked after, and that nothing is too much trouble. As proved the case on this occasion, quite coincidentally. I'll get to that later.
We booked via Last Minute, and secured a reduction from the hotel's own rate - and resolved to book for dinner upon arriving as the hotel's rate including dinner seemed a little high. By doing this we managed a slightly small "Superior" i.e. looking over the bay, room + dinner and saved around £20, which I promptly blew on the expensive but gorgeous "Soldier's Block" Shiraz (a mark up over over £10 here, bit greedy?).
Our dinner was pleasant - good French Onion soup followed by fishcakes for me and a chicken breast for my wife. Nice sweets too. Bit pricey though, we felt, at £21.95 each. We took the remainder of the wine upstairs to watch "Corrie" (sophisticates, both of us), The flat screen TV would only take analogue & kept breaking up. Good excuse for us to return in August to see if they've gone digital! Other channels were OK though. After a short wander round outside, we repaired back to the bar were a personable young man entertained with his guitar. Went upstairs, finished wine, had a nap. About 12 we decided to have a bath - so as the loved one ran it I nipped out for a cig & a chat with the night manager. Upon my return - disaster! - no hot water.I've experienced this before in other hotels and am aware that it is my duty to go and remonstrate until hot water is found. On this occasion, and demonstrating the excellent staff here, the aforementioned night chappie checked our room (it was allegedly still working), and obligingly gave us a key for another room where hot water was to be found, All happy, myself doubly so as it was a good excuse to nip down afterwards, return the key & have another drink!
Oh, Ambassador, we do love you and look forward to returning sooner than usual (we tend to come over "Twixmas" when it's cheaper). One sad note - obviously Keith wasn't on duty this time. Catch you next time!

Room Tip: Ask the staff for what you want. They will do the.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review on TripAdvisor. We welcome all feedback and as a regular visitor to the Ambassador you will be well placed to tell us how the improvements compare to the previous style of the Hotel.
I am glad that you enjoyed the food and wine and apologise for the television fault, we should be switching all of our televisions to digital on Friday of this week!
Thank you for mentioning the hot water problem whilst you were here so that it could be rectified for you.
Thank you once again for your comments, we look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit.

Booked online and despite receiving an email confirming a double room with a sea view on a lower floor (and a telephone call to reiterate). we were placed in the attic and practically had to jump up and down on the bed for any view. After complaining we were put in a first floor room with a lovely view, this is what I expected in the first place. Once we had got over this the hotel was superb and meals were very acceptable. Just a shame about the initial room as my husband is limited in his mobility at present, hence the request for a lower floor room. Hopefully this was just a one-off, but not a pleasant start to the break.

Thank you for your review, I am sorry for the initial room allocation error. I am unsure from your review if you made your booking through the Hotel's own website or through a third party so cannot be sure who confirmed the low floor sea view room.
I am glad that the rest of your stay was a success adn we look forward to welcoming you back to the Ambassador in the future.

Just returned from our first stay of 2011 at the Ambassador. Having stayed there many times during the last 18 years, we again enjoyed the friendly hospitality of this hotel. Good food is enjoyed in the lovely sea view restaurant with excellent buffet breakfast and delicious 3 course evening meals, served by efficient and friendly staff. This great service is found with all staff in the hotel. Although we rarely use the leisure facilities ourselves, theey are a great advantage particularly if you have children.
Already looking forward to our next visits during this summer.

My wife and I take our grand-children to The Ambassador in Scarborough two or three times a year. The staff are exceptionally accommodating and helpful, especially with regard to the needs of people with young children. We invariably take one of the Premier Deluxe sea-view rooms, which are spacious and well decorated and maintained. The generous swimming pool is clean and has a constant 1.3m depth. A sauna is co-located in the pool area. Breakfasts are self-serve, with the exception of tea, coffee and toast, which is ordered and delivered to your table. Evening meals are of a reasonable quality and compare well against other hotels in the area we have previously tried. The staff go out of their way to be helpful. This time we were delighted with Lenin in the restaurant and Harriet on Reception, both of whom showed high levels of professionalism and understanding of what customer service is all about. Location-wise the hotel is on the Esplanade, some 20 minutes walk from the sea front or town. There is a tram which takes the steep aspect out of your walk! ABC taxies charge £4-£4.50 from the railway station/sea front to the hotel. The view from the sea-view rooms on the front of the hotel is one of lawns, well maintained and colourful flowerbeds and the sea, just across the road and down the cliff gardens, through which a path meanders to the sea-front.
