Scarborough has never been well off for guide-rated restaurants, but Lanterna has been a star of the north Yorkshire restaurant scene for decades. We have never made it there before, but a visit this summer on a trip north made it clear why it is a favourite of so many. This is the real Italian thing transplanted into Yorkshire, lots of character, very busy without being too noisy, crowded without being packed too tight. Tasty dishes with character but no unnecessary fussing. Friendly, efficient service; larger than life chef occasionally coming out from the kitchen. Huge list of daily specials is hard to remember, but good. A completely enjoyable visit.
