“Baz "Weekend Break to Scarborough"”
Reviewed 2 April 2014

A group of 6 went to Scarborough for a weekend break with Shearings.
We stayed at the New Southlands Hotel. First Impression was that it looked very modern, bright, and clean.
Reception staff were very organised and had us booked in very quickly.
Bedrooms are a bit basic, need updating, but when you go on a Shearings Break you know what to expect.(5th Trip).
Service was really good. Staff were polite friendly and helpful.
Food was good and a varied choice. Dining room was well presented, again good service.
Enjoyed the entertainment but spoilt one night by a group who were intent on talking all night.
Day out on the Saturday to York very enjoyable.
Our driver Ian was very good he kept us amused and was very informative about various places we visited.
All in all a good break. The people staying at the Hotel were very friendly which also helps.
Scarborough is a nice place (bit hilly) we would go again.

I am very pleased to read your kind review thank you for taking the time to post your comments, It is great to read that regular guests of Shearings Hotels enjoyed their stay with us. As you mention some of the rooms require a little updating we are currently in the process of planning updates to some of our rooms which we hope to begin work on later in the year. I am glad you enjoyed your trip to York which is a very enjoyable city to visit and you found your driver very informative. We hope to see you again in the not too distant future.

We have just returned from this hotel and would like to say what an enjoyable break we had... Right from the check in to our departure we had no complaints whatsoever... our Room 106 on the first floor was large with bay window overlooking the side street towards the church, very clean with impeccable housekeeping... plenty of hot water in our bathroom and although very small was adequate for our needs... The room, because it was large felt quite cold but the staff soon provided us with and extra oil filled radiator and with the central heating we soon had a snug room...
Dining.... The dining room is light and airy and the staff cannot be faulted,,,, Good choice of Menu both at breakfast and evening meal.. with a Gala dinner served on a Wednesday with vouchers for 4 drinks per person throughout this day....

Entertainment.... The usual Bingo and QuIz, and although not enjoyed by everyone passes an hour before the entertainment starts, which on every evening was very good...

Trips out... Although we made our way by car we went out with the Shearings Guests on the trips and had a really good time... Very informative driver who took us to Heartbeat Country one day.... congratulations to him for all his info...

This Hotel obviously has staff that really enjoy their job.... Well done to all of them and we will return......

Room Tip: We stayed on the 1st floor room 106.... lovely large bay window that had the morning sun....

My sister and I have just returned from our first visit to Scarborough. We booked this hotel as it had good reviews online and prices were very reasonable. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the train station, town centre and local attractions. The hotel doesn't look much from the outside but inside it was well presented, clean with spacious bedrooms (we stayed in a standard room), the bathroom was compact but had everything you need. In my opinion the USP for this hotel are the staff, they couldn't be any friendlier and went out if their way to ensure guests were happy. The one downside for me was that I didn't realise that the hotel tended to cater for mainly senior citizens and it would have been nice to mix with more people of our own age. Having said that, everyone we spoke to was lovely and we had a splendid couple if days!

What kind comments you have left for us, thank you. I am very lucky to have a great team here :) Athough we don’t ovelook the sea, the area we are in is ideal for the South Cliff Gardens (which in the summer are lovely) and Spa Theatre as well as being on a good bus route to and from the town centre. I will be sure on your comments to my staff.

When booking on line £198 was quoted but after continuing to book on line was forced to pay £75 more to upgrade to superior room. And it doesn't seem superior.
Room large, decor tired , thermostatic radiator valve top missing , cold room even colder bathroom.
Bath behind door restricted access to bath caused by fixed shower screen. Difficult to get in and out.
Toilet seat loose, electric supply box to electric towel rail cover loose or wrong type ( gap at top of cover plate that could allow condensation that drips down tiled wall to get in supply box)

Meals not very hot, tea in morning not very hot sparse portions poor choice.

Staff comprehension poor.

Bar staff good, reception staff good.

This was our first visit to the Southlands. On arrival we were given a room on the top floor. As my sister and I are both in our eighties i always request a lower floor. The Manageress was very helpful and managed a room on first floor which was a very nice room. No complaints at all, if anything it was too warm but as the weather was very cold we were very pleased. The entertainment was very good on all 4 nights in particular on the last night. Could not be faulted at all. Bar staff and dining room staff very good apart from 1 young lady waitress who could not understand english very well. We asked for fried bread and toast well done which she did not undertand. Our main complaint was the food. Bacon always dry and hard, eggs not always hot and toast never even warm. Had the chefs special one night but could not even cut into the gamon. Shame because everything else about the hotel was first class. Very nicely decorated and always very clean.
Trips nout were also very good.

Room Tip: We had room 119 which was mainly for people with disabilities and was excellent. Always warm and ver...

We have many short breaks due to the cheapness of Shearing's hotels so don't feel can complain about any little shortcomings but the conversation I had with the booking office a couple of weeks ago was almost surreal I assume it is recorded somewhere in full but the gist of it was as follows;:- (Girl) Any special requests? (Me) Only a comfortable bed, its about the only thing I need from a holiday. (Girl) I don't think I can request that, I'll have to ask my supervisor.......I've had a word and I'm told I can request it but its not guaranteed! Not sure if it means their advertising contravenes the trades description act but at least they were honest about it.

Room Tip: Rooms & corridors over reception side (assume original part of hotel) bit over heated and those...

I am not quite sure why you have posted your review of your telephone conversation you have with the reservations team, as this site is for reviews of the experience that you had at the hotel and your only mention of the hotel is regarding the heating on the corridors.
