“Very poor value for Shearings money”
Reviewed 23 November 2010

The single supplement for a single "cupboard" was a disgrace, the bathroom minute, and smelt of sewers, the blanket on the bed needed throwing out.Hotel refurbed from the bothom upwards ,only didnt reach the bedrooms.Mealtimes were a bit chaotic, but food wasnt bad.Poor value for money.Wake up Shearings.

The food was the worst that we have ever experienced, either in a restaurant or hotel
The bedrooms wer poorly cleaned and need updating, ie.new matress, sash window frame needs cleaning and decorating.
Bahroom shower mat was that grotty we did not use it. Silicone grouting in the shower peeling and needs replacing.
On the positive side the staff in the dining room and bar were efficient and attentive.
The entertainment on the Thursday night was the best part of a disappointing stay.

I booked this hotel for a long weekend after reading a seductive offer in a daily newspaper. The hotel looked up market and was being branded under the 'Coast & Country' logo - 'finer hotels at fairer prices'.

We arrived quite late after a long drive. The room was awful. Smelt of urine and had large patches of damp and fungus on the wall. The furnishing were really dated and wouldn't get a buyer at a car boot sale! We asked for a room change and were given a room with two single beds. We were told to push them together. I did this and found a disgusting mess under the bed which had clearly never been cleaned. When I tried to open the window my hands were black with mould.

We complained but as this is a 'Shearings' Hotel everything has to be referred Head Office. We checked out in disgust.

I took some photographs with my phone so you can see for yourself. I wrote to Shearings but the response was one of complete disinterest.

We wasted a lot of time and money travelling to this hotel. It was a disaster so be-warned.

At the risk of sounding terribly snobby, we usually stay in posher places than this, but wanted a quick, cheap break, so were prepared to take it as it came. We possibly lowered the average age of the guests by a decade or so – there were a couple of teenagers and a baby but otherwise the clientele was elderly and very friendly and chatty.

The place looks exactly like the website photos and is very light and airy, clean and in good condition. The staff are great – very efficient, helpful and friendly. The breakfast was good – croissants and yogurts as well as the usual stuff and good coffee, although they sometimes ran out of things. We had booked half board, but the evening meals were not great – very little fresh fish which is odd given the location and not much fresh veg either. The evening entertainment was musical quizzes, songs from the shows etc. We sat in the bar but there wasn’t really any escaping it – if mobility wasn’t an issue, we would have eaten elsewhere and spent the evening in the pub, then I think we would have thought it a great hotel as the (premier) room was spacious and comfortable (rather odd wooden edges to the four-poster though which weren’t a good idea) and the bathroom – bath plus separate shower cabinet – was really good. No sea views but there are gardens over the road then you are at the south esplanade with lots of benches and there’s a cliff lift.

For an easy, comfortable, cheap B&B break, I would recommend this place and presumably the rest in the group are similar, but I would give the evening meals a miss.

just got back from a long weekend stay at this hotel booked through shearings.
cannot fault this hotel in anyway.
travelled with adult family members and had a really enjoyable time.
hotel has really attractive public areas, and also some fab looking premier rooms which can be booked at a supplement, although we stayed in the normal rooms which were perfectly acceptable. really clean, spotless bedlinen and towels, tea and coffee making facilities which were replenished daily.
food was really good, breakfast and dinner.
cannot fault our stay in anyway and would happily return here anytime

I stayed at this Hotel from Monday to Friday this week..... immediately felt welcomed by the front desk staff - just what I needed after a long drive...
I was given my room key and went up in the lift to the 3rd floor....... initially on seeing the room I was really disappointed...it was a single but very small with a very small tv and rather dated....sorry to go on about the single room thing but this was not cheap and as a single older person I knew that I would be staying in my room most nights (mostly due to exhaustion after sightseeing all day!!! )
Anyway to cut a long story short the brilliant and helpful manageress RUTH suggested an upgrade which I took - wow the difference was amazing - and I was a happy bunny again!!! So well worth considering an upgrade as the cost is not prohibitive
I went on a B & B basis and a visit to the dining room was pleasant......the dining room manager The ever attentive EDDIE runs his area with strict but friendly air.
We had things in common as both being avid e-bay fans we compared our experiences and he gave me a couple of good tips!!
Most dining room staff were European and very helpful and hardworking - as was EDDIE who was not afraid to clear tables when they were busy - now I call that leading by example .Two complaints both small but should be mentioned in a review, the sausages were awful and why not a proper full and whole kipper when in Scarborough instead of a pre-packed fillet?
If these are the only hiccups in 4 days it shows that the Hotel is doing something right....
The area was lovely although the lift which is near to the hotel was not working so no really easy way down to the beach....lovely walking along the cliffs and down to the harbour, and the seafood was great...
I would highly recommend " winking willies" fish and chip shop and cafe down near the harbour - the cafe is basic but the fish & chips are to die for...someone told me the fish frier started when he was 15 and is still there in his 40s....he is doing a good job.
Plenty of good shops and a lift from the harbour up to the shops. Lots of places to walk.
A good theatre in the round.......and a leisure complex called the spa - but dont be confused this is NOT a spa it is a theatre and other entertainment place - there is a leisure - swim etc at the opposite end of the bay high up at the top of the cliffs...
