“Do not book this hotel unless you want to be disappointed!”
Reviewed 27 November 2011

I really dont know where to start. We arrived early and knew we couldnt check in, however we needed directions to the racecourse. Asked the receptionist and she was not very helpful. She told us it was a 20 min drive! I had already done my research so i knew it was not that far. Thank god for my iphone i used the maps on there and we walked, it was about 3 miles! Had a fab day at the races. Came back and it was dark. It is a half a mile a walk from the gates to the hotel and the whole way there, it was pitch black there was no lights, so we couldnt see the path very well. My partner fell over a bollard and hurt his leg all because there was no lights. Got to the room and this looked nice however on a closer look what we thought was a huge double bed was actually 2 single beds pushed together. The beds themselves were very uncomfortable and the room was far too hot (there was no controler for the heating) . We didnt get a very good nights sleep.Went to get something for tea and couldnt find the restaurant the lack of signs and staff did not help. We ended up getting a drink in a bar, only to find out we were gate crashing a private wedding function. By this point we had had enough so we ended up going to a pub that we drove past on the way there. We enjoyed a lovely meal and didnt want to go back to our hotel. My advice to anyone going to newbury is book the hare and hounds hotel. It had a charming atmoshere, food was gorgeous and staff were very helpful. Would never go back to Donnington Grove! From the outside the hotel looks lovely but the staff have no knowledge and werent very helpful, and the lack of signs really didnt help. This hotel is good for golfers and functions, it just felt like the staff were not interested in us as we were just a couple. The best and only good thing here was the shower and the view from our room.

Room Tip: Dont go to the Donnington Grove go to the Hare and Hounds

Stayed here for a week whilst working in Newbury. I can not fault this hotel, service is attentive yet unobtrusive, the food is amazing in both the River restaurant and Spikes bar. The rooms are clean, with high ceilings and large windows over looking manicured grounds and little bits of golf course, which also looks like its worth a return trip.
If you need to stay in Newbury, and want a little more luxury for not too much more money, I urge to give this lovely listed building a try. It doesn't disappoint.

When booking this hotel the main priority was to choose something with character in the Newbury area and we weren't disappointed. It may be that we were lucky with our room but it was magnificent with large sash windows overlooking the golf course. Having read previous reviews it's easy to worry about the condition and the staff etc however all the staff that we spoke to were pleasant and helpful and i don't think you can expect all mod cons with a building of this age. When comparing to a faceless and charmless modern building i would prefer this any day of the week. There were lots of golfers in the breakfast room but hey it is on a golf course and there was a birthday party going on but we never heard any noise. I would have no hesitation in going back.

Room Tip: Ask for the older part of the building overlooking the golf course.

I stayed in a room which was four rooms away from a disco hall that was playing very loud music for a birthday party, which we were never informed about. The music was very loud and kept me up until half 12, nice! Asked for a refund in the morn and got 40 pound off the room ( not enough for losing sleep in my eyes ). The assistant manager on duty at the time was very rude and reluctant to give refund and never once apologised! Which was a shame as the receptionist and staff in location were very friendly and helpful, all in all ok place to stay but very poorly managed, find some manners mr assistant manager

As part of a large group of women golfers we enjoyed our visit to this hotel and course in August 2011.
Genrally the totel rooms were clean but basic. Some rooms much larger than others.
New, smart extension of bar and restaurant, but why take whole order at one for the three courses - this caused some dalay in getting the meals served?
Golf course was supeeb but long alks between some holes! Make sure you ahve a good batttery for yout trolley or hire a buggy.

Room Tip: Take your own towels

We spent one night here and thought the building and grounds were fantastic but the modern furniture and atmosphere felt a bit like an upmarket old people's home especially the breakfast hours being between 7 and 9 on a Sunday!. Breakfast staff very jolly, swans lovely to go and talk to on the stream, bathroom shower very nice and actually very good value for money as we were on a wedding rate.

Seems like a good option when visiting the area as other local hotels seemed to be of a similar style

Room Tip: I would ask to stay in the main bit of the house to see how they are furnished although familes may...
