“rating would have been higher if there was no damp in the room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2013

We stayed for one night in Cherry (a room in the mews section of the hotel). The main building is very attractive, but the entrance is poorly signed from the car park. Check in was efficient (although the room wasn’t ready for check in at 3pm when supposedly you can check in from 2pm). The staff were very helpful in trying to sort out a booking problem (not one of the hotels making). Free wifi throughout the building was a bonus .
We were moved from the main building to the mews outbuilding. The receptionist warned us that the room was small and it was. The bathroom was a good size. The bath tap ran constantly. The TV was old and had a limited number of TV channels but you could access the internet from it at good speed. The bed was comfortable, nice quality linen, but squeaked every time you moved (it sounded a bit like being on a boat) - and there was only room for one bedside table. My main complaint was the smell - warm and damp (no obvious extractor in the bathroom). There was a very large patch of rising damp in the corner of the room by the desk and the window surround and sill was black with mould. Such a shame. Whilst this isnt a noisy hotel the sound insulation isnt good. We heard people going up and down the stairs well past midnight and were treated to the resident upstairs singing Status Quo's back catalogue followed by a bit of Pink Floyd! till the early hours.

Would we stay here again? absolutely for the money we paid (I was happy with the price I paid which was not rack price).

We stayed as a couple for two nights on a bed and breakfast deal with dinner included on first night .The hotel is in a nice setting and you are warmly welcomed on your arrival. The public rooms are attractive well decorated and feel comfortable. The bedroom was at the top of a feature spiral staircase and was of a reasonable size, well furnished (except for rather small 135cm bed instead of the mor normal king size) well lit ,comfortable and clean as was the bathroom.A new wifi and tv system had just been introduced into each bedroom and we did experience some teathing problems but the staff delt with the problems well .Very quiet no banging doors in the middle of the night etc.
The spa had a small contoured pool ,not for the serious swimmer but good to splash around in.The jacuzzi was hot .clean and relaxing .The whole area was well looked after with good changing facilities ,only critism as is often the case front desk not manned so people had to wait to be booked in etc.
Dinner on first night was not exceptional but still enjoyable ,breakfasts were exellent with cold and hot buffet and pleasant staff.
Overall a very relaxing stay and the real point ,would we stay again .Yes we would.

This hotel will be fine if you appreciate certain qualities in a hotel - such as the rural location, which means it's quiet, and the country house look of the buildings and grounds. However there may be certain other aspects that you might find lacking. I have had to stay here a lot due to work nearby, and whilst it hasn't changed much over the years it certainly hasn't improved since Mercure took it over from Ramada. For me, the dreary food (especially breakfast which is woeful) and the tiny radiators in the rooms (which are always turned off anyway) make it one of my least favourite options. There is a tiny gym and pool, which is just about serviceable, and the location is pleasant (although really far out from Newbury so no option to avoid the hotel food really). Rooms are dated although apart from radiators OK, TV is a restricted choice with the hard sell on movies, again a very dated concpet when most are just switching to a wide choice on Freeview. Probably works well as a venue for a wedding in the summer, as long as you're not worried about giving your guests excellent food and drink.
One other thing, if you're a member of the Accor hotels loyalty scheme, they never have your number on your reservation, they never recognise you, they never provide the welcome gift you're supposed to get (even Ibis hotels give you a free drink) and they never apply the points to your account. This is quite annoying given that the Accor scheme is one of the worst value offers in the hotel industry.

I stayed here with a colleague on business he was situated in the Old part of the Hotel which he found to be quite dated I was situated in the new part with a very good sized room excellent facilities, the staff were plentiful and friendly in the evening of our stay with less staff about at breakfast which was a little bit of a let down but acceptable, would be happy to stay here again.

Heating system needs updating very limited choice of food very poor quality

Bar man didn't want to be there very rude

Drinks far too expensive

Needs investment and a makeover

Wow! Lovely hotel with very welcoming staff! Special mention to Leanne on reception who looked after us and chatted with our group during our stay, (other receptionist was nice too sorry forgot her name!) lovely rooms, lovely lounge, bar, restaurant. Brendan couldn't do enough for us and ran around like a madman dealing with everyone's requests. Really friendly man who dealt very well with one woman in our group who was a nasty piece of work.
The only thing I didn't love was no wifi in the bedroom (fine in bar and lounge though) and I was charged for my starter which I never received (but that's my fault for being too tired to argue), this hotel still very much deserves my five star rating!
Upon checkout Leanne even kindly gave me a free ice scraper as it was a cold morning and an air freshener for my car! I would definitely stay again and have already recommended it to others!

We stayed here for one night to get away and enjoy the indoor pool (small but lovely and warm) and the countryside location of this hotel. Good points: the room was a good size, the pool was nice, check-in was friendly, quick and easy, the pool guy lent us a lost armband for our toddler when one of ours went missing, and there was a good sized tv and lounge area that could be enjoyed. Bad points: only one towel was provided in our bathroom (yet it was a family room), the signposting to the pool was simply stupid (arrows pointed back and forth along the same corridor, and up instead of down a flight of stairs - honestly, how hard is it to signpost directions?) and one woman who was working the front desk on the Sunday morning was quite rude - sorry, are we bothering you with our attempts to check-out? - and we left with a bad taste in our mouths. If not for her and those frustrating signs, this would have been a very good rating instead, particularly as it was ridiculously cheap.
