Stayed here on business for three nights as other local hotels fully booked. The hotel is in need of refurbishment as the public areas are really tired and worn. The stairways have carpet that is down to the lining and walls cracked and need painting. The bedrooms are clean and tidy, however the floors are noisy as is the sound of people walking past the rooms at all hours. Fire alarm testing (At least that's all I can put it down to) for two nights at nine pm and 22:45 is annoying to say the least.
Would not recommend.

Stayed 2 nights for business and chose the hotel for the location. The bedroom was very hot but faced onto the main road and was noisy enough with the window shut. Breakfast was ok but the service was very slow. The decor in my room was very dated and the bathroom was very old and grubby and the shower didn't work properley. One of the towells was really dirty(must've been used to clean a car), the reception staff were apologetic and changed it. The bar is not manned so if you want a drink then you have to go and find someone, they get your drink and disappear again. I won't be back

stayed one night to break journey to southampton to pick up a cruise.the car park is massive, our room was much better than expected and overlooked the main street.the hotel was excellent value although some of the public areas needed a clean up and a new coat of paint(stairways).this is our only gripe.the restaurant and meal slection was very good.as an ex-rep who has stayed in many hotels i would rate the breakfast as one of the best i have ever had (and the service was first rate). we found newbury to be a good shopping centre with a friendly atmosphere. we would not hesitate to book at the chequers in future.

First off this place, although located close to the centre of Newbury needs around a quarter of million quid spent on it. The décor is dated, worn and the carpets generally threadbare. The hotel smells throughout of a mix of musty carpet mixed with deep fired chips.
The window in our room was original and was rotten and would not stay open so it was quite stuffy. The bed was partially collapsed in the middle and the sheets did not smell fresh. The bathroom was clean-ish but very, very dated - the shower was the old style ones coming off the top of the mixer tap and the towel rail had clearly leaked but been bodged with some tape. The lino did not fit properly either.
I could forgive most of these things but the price did not include breakfast and the cooking odour throughout the hotel put us off paying for one!
Positives, erm..... staff seemed OK and there was plenty of parking available.

stayed here for one night as a business type trip, with family, clean , comfortable rooms, lovely linen on beds, nice towels, plenty of bathroom space, all what i would expect from a three star hotel, staff really pleasant and helpful, bar prices a little high but in a hotel thats what you expect, breakfast very good plenty of choice and good quality really good service would stay here again if in newbury good value for money.

I stayed in Newbury after a wedding, and The Chequers Hotel was an affordable option.

The room was dated but served its purpose, the main benefit of the Hotel was its central location.

I didn't get a chance to try the food or use the bar.

Stayed at this charming hotel in Newbury to attend a friend's wedding. Set on the main road, the hotel offered good basic accommodation and also has a bistro called JP's where guests can order a good meal. We were made welcome by all members of staff, although I did have to ask all of them for their names as none were wearing name badges. I did comment on this and was told that they used to wear them but have not done so recently. After attending our friend's wedding we came back here for the reception and had a good photo op in the charming little garden at the back of the room where the meal was served. Overall, the standard is reasonable, but I did notice that all the communicating doors throughout the building looked a bit scruffy and would have benefitted from a coat of paint: they were scuffed and had black marks on them. This doesn't create a good impression on you as you make your way to your room, although once in room all clean and a reasonable standard. There are no lifts in the hotel and it was a bit of a slog for me up to the top floor with various stair cases on the way. The food throughout our stay was of a reasonable standard and a fair range of choices including locally sourced gammon that my partner ordered and thoroughly enjoyed. We both agreed that as it's in such a convenient location that we would stay there again.

Room Tip: Rooms to the front of the building suffer from traffic noise if the windows are open - hotel on a fa...
