Stayed for one night. Exterior of hotel lets it down and is in need of refurbishment. They need some plants or flowers in the planters...dead plants do not give a good first impression. Large free car park.
Signs of wear in the corridors leading to the room. Room comfortable and clean. Flatscreen TV and comfortable bed. Tea & Coffee facility provided.
Buffet breakfast well stocked and hot.
Check in and out efficient.

We came here just of a night after a weeding in the local area. Although we arrived early, the staff were very accommodating and provided us with a ground floor room in which to change and coffee and croissants before we left for the church. Neither of us are too good on stairs and we appreciated the ground floor room, which was small but quite satisfactory. The bed was comfortable, the room clean, the tiny bathroom was adequate and had good supplies of shower and bath gel, and large towels. Our room, 304, opened our onto the car park, which was convenient for unpacking, but not so good the next morning as we stepped out into the rain!
Breakfast was extensive an excellent, with cerials, fruit, croissants, cold meats, tasty proper sausages, bacon, black pudding , eggs, etc.
My sister had an upstairs room which was spacious and comfortable.

Just back from weekend at this hotel and I found that it was just what we needed for a trip to Newbury races, the hotel is currently under refurbishment but we were not inconvenienced by work going on and new furniture in bedrooms was of a good standard ,rooms are clean and quite big especially bathrooms which is always a plus. Breakfast was very nice and staff were efficient and welcoming. We were a party of 4 with 2 rooms and all 4 of us enjoyed our stay and are thinking about returning next year.

Room Tip: We had rooms on second floor but if you have walking difficulties ask for lower floor as there are n...

It was really a pleasant suprise after reading some negative reviews. It is true, the hotel is in need of a major re-decoration and the first impression of dead plants in the window boxes adds to the bad look.

The room was quite nice with all the needs satisfied, wifi was complimentory and free parking added to the plus side. The staff were helpful and its proximity to town made it a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

A bit of paint and some tender love and care could make the place a must stay for any visitor to Newbury. I may have been a little generous with my rating, but it was a little better than average.

Room Tip: Away from the front of the building

I was a bit apprehensive having read the reviews here but I had no complaints about this hotel. The staff were friendly and efficient, knew what they were talking about. We had a street facing room on the second floor but as the windows had secondary glazing, did not suffer from any road noise. It was a bit of a ramble up to the room but it is an old building. The beds, bed linen, towels, bathroom, carpets etc were all clean and comfortable with a temperature control on the shower. Tea and coffee facilities, iron, ironing board, trouser press. half mirror, fan and TV were all in the room, the only minus point was no fridge and the room was a wee bit small but certainly not cramped. There were numerous plug sockets to recharge all my gadgets and free wifi was available. Centrally located, ample parking it was difficult to find something to complain about. We didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment but would have no problem about staying here again. Some of our party stayed in the family rooms and they had no complaints either.

Stayed for two nights , stayed previously and found the room great and the staff offhand, this time complete turnaround room was just okay it was clean but quite small , mattress very uncomfy , the staff all seemed to have been on a customer service course and were polite to the point of being a little over the top, we were given a card with a number on to get back into the hotel after eleven via the back door ,
The second night we went into the bar and there was a few people having a drink there but at five to eleven the barman was asking people to pay and leave, I have never experienced a hotel turning trade away before .
Breakfast last time we stayed was in the restaraunt and waitress service the food was excellent ,this time a few months later it was buffet style in a back room there were no burners under the food and therefore it was just Luke warm , seating was also on huge circular tables which we really didn't like at all , can't comment on the food in the bistro as for some reason they were using the back of the bar area and not the restaraunt as we didn't want to be the only ones dining we went elsewhere,
To sum it up it has the potential but is wasted lovely staff but lacking in other areas , next visit to Newbury we shall stay elsewhere

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room

First and foremost, my experience was that all the staff were really friendly, and seemed genuinely keen to help. That goes a long way to making a stay more relaxing. Because it is an old coaching inn, it is a bit of a warren when finding your room. It also has rooms on the front, and therefore a road. Obviously this is where the coaches used to go. But it isn't the motorway some reviewers have made out. I slept well enough with the windows open. The floors creak a bit but it's an old building and the room pricing is competitive. The in house bistro was offering a 3 course meal and an OK glass of wine for £15, and very good it was too. Downside, apart from the shower which had hot and cold but varied between them at random, were aesthetic. The car park is tight once full and the apartments on the edge of it make it look like the motels you see on CSI. The interior public areas are a bit shabby in places. But at the end of the day if you like buildings to have character then you have to accept they might not be perfect. So once I got over the first impressions I found I looked forward to coming back to the hotel after a long day working. It might not meet everyone's standards, but the staff are good and it does not lack character.
