“Don't even bother!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2010

Myself and a work colleague was booked in here for 3 nights. When booking for the hotel by an external company, my work colleague was told that "They have had some complaints about this hotel", but we thought we would give it a go anyway. Big mistake! We stayed for the first night, and then phoned our hotel booker and asked them to get us out of there and find us somewhere else.

My room had wallpaper curling from all areas and where it was curling it had mold mixed in with it. The shower would leak all over the floor from the back of the bath and where this had been happening for many month/years the lino flooring was cracked/black and moldy. I had an old style TV with 5 fuzzy channels on it. The toliet took 5 flushes of the handle to make it work. Room needed updating, looked very 70's. The first floor corridor carpet looks like it had been bought down the local market and layed by a group of nursury children.

My work colleagues room was next door and had the same sort of issues, she on the other had did have an LCD with freeview.

I also asked when checking in did they have WIFI. The reply was "£2.99 for 1 hour or £9.99 for 24 hours", and you guest it, I started laughing!

Food was average and out of the all the staff we saw only one stood out with any good customer service, manners and a smile.

The english breakfast was basic, eveything tasted the same!!!!

The only positive thing about the hotel was it was less than 30 seconds away from the main town.

We were then booked into the Hilton Centre which was about 5 minutes away, and what an outstanding hotel. And all for an extra £4 a night compared to The Chequers!

Reception staff helpful. The room reeked of cigarette smoke and it lingered.(someone had definatley been smoking in there) Not very clean room, the bed was very hard and not at all comfortable. The shower sprayed everywhere so the floor got very wet, cistern lever on toilet spun round and it was pot luck if it flushed, almost no toilet roll either. Bathroom was dirty. Bulbs missing in lamps.
The plus side it is so close to Newbury town centre and breakfast was quite good, probably because we were early.

The Chequers is located right in city center of Newbury. Just 2 mins walk from main shopping and pub area. The hotel itself is nice, English small town atmosphere hotel, with perfect service. Somebody may say it may be little cleaner (small scratches at wallpaper etc.) but it was very OK for me. Breakfast was also OK, with choice of English or continental buffet.

The price of 88GBP (including breakfast) was also OK. I would definitely not mind to stay there again.

I found the staff at the Chequers hotel to be very pleasant but the hotel itself is a real mess and in desperate need of a total renovation. I have stayed several times in 2009 and experienced rooms where there is no heating or hot water and rooms where the heating was so hot it was unbearable. The carpets are gaffer taped down with big gashes across them, the walls are stained with old damp patches and the bathrooms are prehistoric. Breakfast is basic and I would not eat there again out of choice – I had croissants that were burnt on the outside and still uncooked dough on the inside. It also appeared as though building staff were wondering in during breakfast to grab juice and pastries before going off to work somewhere on the hotel!

Unless you are working in the centre of Newbury for a short period of time I would avoid this hotel at all costs.

We arrived for a family get together as well as business through the day. The reception we got was friendly and proffesional. We felt that we had been there as friends before. our room, (301 outside in the courtyard) was spacious, clean, well decorated a good comfortable bed and duvet with ample furnishings to relax or work.
The selection of refreshments in the room for tea and coffee was well above average and was topped up during our stay. Unlike a lot of places. There were additional extras like the trouser press but there was no in-room fridge.
The bathroom was spacious with good size towels and lighting with an excelent shower.
The down-side, The guests above us seemed to enjoy walking around at all hours on the creaking floors along with the noise of ALL their bodily functions. The bathroom taps were difficult to operate when ones hands were wet and the hot water was scaldingly hot and condensation soon soaked the windows. There was no latch on the door so if we nipped out to the car - remember the room key! The Wifi connection was expensive but we were told that the hotel was going to have a face lift and free WIFI would then be available. There was also a kitchen hic-up on our breakfast one morning due to the ovens "going down". The bonus to this hotel in Newbury though has to be free parking and central location.

Good location however the room was shabby, I found an old packet of crisps in the draw and the bathroom was awful and dirty, the sink was blocked and the shower didn't work and dripped all night extremely loudly........ I only stayed one night, I would never stay again.

At £50 for room only, this central hotel seemed like excellent value but with the price of the breakfast at £11.95 it made more sense to go to a local cafe. The hotel would benefit from a refurbishment. Generally staff were friendly but I was disappointed to have to ask for tea and coffee sachets the first night and milk the second.
