we have just returned from here - and had the most amazing time..
The check in was easy and simple. Our room was large and modern. Very clean. There were also luxuries such as a seperate shower and bath (and the bath was huge!), and you could listen to music or the T,V in the bathroom through a sound system. There was a DVD player and hot drinks avaliable in the room. When walking around the hotel the staff was very friendly and polite, and willing to help with anything.
We also used the spa facilities. I had a treatment which was better than i have had in other spas. We also used the jacuzzi, suana, swimming pool etc which was good.

I would definatly stay here again and really enjoyed this hotel.

We stayed at Donnington Valley for one night, and had upgraded the room to a deluxe- as recommended by the receptionist. It was a special occasion and we had high expectations and were looking forward to a relaxing time. We firstly had a massage on a massage chair, which was quite good, thereafter it went downhill. In the room- we decided to make tea- the kettle had grit inside it, the teapot still had residue from the last guests. The DVD player did not work (even though this is a bonus of having a deluxe room). The sink got blocked. They had no hairdryer. The bed was so hard that I did not have a good nights sleep at all, I was awake most of the night hoping for the morning! The next morning I had a stiff, painful neck and back which left me feeling exhausted- this does not help when you already have medical problems.
Further in the spa, the sauna was out of order as it was too hot to step into- it was burning hot.

I explained the above to the receptionsit upon leaving- she had no customer service skills whatsoever and simply said that their beds were not old!

I would NEVER recommend this place, it was a nightmare, especially for a so called deluxe room. Even cheaper hotels like Travelodge have better facilities. It was the worst hotel, spa we have ever been too.

We stayed here for a weekend break just to escape and relax, the hotel did not disappoint. Check in was speedy and staff all very helpful and friendly. The outside of the hotel is nothing to look at, however, the reception area is very pleasant and opens out to the very large open plan Piano Bar which is on 2 levels.

Our Classic double room was beautifully and tastefully apppointed and surprisingly spacious. Despite the room being located in the eaves (mind your head!) it was very light and airy with 2 velux windows, there were also commanding views over the countryside which felt as though you were out in the middle of nowhere. The room was immaculate and had a very comfortable king size bed, a nice big TV, tea/coffee/biscuits with fresh milk in the fridge, trouser press, hairdryer, climate control, laptop safe and a very large wardrobe. We also ordered champagne on arrival which was nicely chilled ready and waiting to be
guzzled! The one thing that really impressed was the lack of noise and blackout blinds (they have definitely invested in excellent soundproofing), usually in big hotels you hear other room doors banging, people walking along the corridor and neighbouring bathrooms/flushes but not here so you are in for a great night's sleep.

The bathroom was equally as spotless with proper thick fluffy towels, nice toiletries - shampoo, soap, shower gel, cotton wool/buds, body lotion, shower cap but no conditioner.

The health club/gym is fantastic. It was, again, immaculately well kept and the staff are all so friendly and cheerful. The gym although average size was well appointed with new updated equipment, it wasn't busy when we were there so access to the running machines etc was OK. The swimming pool is of a good size and there is also a sauna, steam room, aromasteam room and jacuzzi. There is also an lounge area where you can order coffee and snacks as well as a patio area that the pool area opens out to. The changing/shower rooms were spacious and again spotless and well equipped with everything from 'Find Spa Range' shampoo, scalp/hair mud, shower gel, body lotion, plenty of hairdryers and also hair straighteners.

Their spa offers a comprehensive range of treatments - facials, massages, nails, waxing etc. that are all very reasonably priced. We booked in for the Chair massage which was excellent. They are very busy so you need to book well in advance at weekends to ensure you get what you want, sadly we booked 4 weeks ahead so were very limited.

The bar is huge with a mezzanine floor so it feels very airy and not too close to other fellow drinkers, it also has alot of character and oversized sofas that you fall into. There is an extensive wine list and you can also sandwiches/snacks here. Again, service was very efficient and always with a smile.
The hotel has a well renowned restaurant, although we didn't eat there, this is the sister hotel to the more famous The Vineyard with it's 2 Michelin stars, so I am sure it lives up to its reputation. There is a very nice gastro pub, The Swan Inn in Newtown (about 10 mins drive away) that serves excellent food with equally generous portions.

There is also a golf course here and well located for a number of attractions (Donnington Castle ruins, Highclere Castle - closes from Sept, Avebury Henges/Manor, Sandham Memorial Chapel, Beacon Hill - excellent views, Didcot Railway, Marlborough) as well as Newbury itself.

We had a superb weekend here and wish we didn't have to leave.....so we've booked to come again in a couple of weeks! Thank you to all the staff here.

The grounds and the approach to the hotel is lovely and then..........Hotel reception was unmanned and had to go looking for someone to check me in. The reception area needed re-painting. The room had a musty smell and needed redecorating, there were water mark stains on the wall paper and paint peeling off the window sill where you had difficulty in seeing through the dirty windows. The restaurant was sparsely furnished and is, and what it should, be billed as a golf hotel. Breakfast was a joke; there was no one to greet you to inform you of the arrangements; no one came to take my order.

Spent a night there with girl friends - enjoyed it overall but it wasn't without its issues. We checked in early afternoon and rooms ready which was good. However, we were asked at check-in to choose our dinner (all three courses) - who knows at 2pm what they want to eat at 8.30 (especially dessert!) - so we declined to do this. It wasn't a problem to order later whilst having pre-dinner drinks, so why expect us to pre-order? The pool area was very nice (but also very hot!) - and I heard that the treatments was of a high standard. We ate lunch in the bar which was quite pricey (the sandwiches are cheaper in the spa). We all thoroughly enjoyed our dinner which exceeded expectations so bit surprised to see other reviewers had problems. We had a couple of staff attitude problems but then other staff were very helpful. Overall, don't think we will return.

We have just returned from a 2 night family break at this hotel. Our overall experience was positive but since we had read beforehand (from reviews and the hotel website) that this was a 4*+ hotel, we went with high expectations and ultimately became disappointed with some aspects. Lets starts with the up-side - our executive room was located on the ground floor, very near the spa facilities. The room itself was big, clean, new and well equipped with a separate bath and shower cubicle, DVD player and broadband internet. As part of the family break offer, we were welcomed with a bowl of popcorn and home made cookies, all a very nice touch! The reception staff were also very polite, helpful and friendly, and responded efficiently to any queries we had. The spa facilities were all new too, and my facial was a real treat. Now for the not so good aspects of our stay

1) Our room was still being cleaned in the late afternoon so we had to wait quite a bit before we could get into our room after a day out.
2) The fresh milk in our fridge (which was a nice idea) had gone off.
3) The soundproofing of our room door wasn't great - we were woken up twice in the early hours of the night by guests talking loudly in the corridor (we could even hear them when they went into their room and closed their door!).
4) Although the restaurant staff were very friendly, and the food was tasty, the service was rather poorly organized. A few members of staff were madly rushing about serving people whereas others (particularly a few more senior members in suits) just seemed to stand around. Lets say the staff rushing around wasn't conducive to a very relaxing dining experience. As was noted by a few other reviewers, the breakfast wasn't run too well - toast was burnt, the hot buffet service was rather slow (leading to a long queue developing) and some food items were not replenished quickly.

All of the above is nit-picking but these issues should really be resolved if the hotel wants to market itself as a 4*+ hotel!

I had booked a special offer for a 1 night spa break - accommodation, breakfast and 1 25 min treatment.

On check in the staff were friendly and had upgraded our room to an executive which was lovely. On reception they had offers for this upgrade for £25pn and would have definitely had paid this had we not been upgraded. The only downside was that we had no bathrobes or slippers so when lounging in the spa this felt awkward. That said it was great.

The spa area was busy with limited loungers and could see that at peak times you'd spend most time swimming once people found a bed they were there for good. For a hotel though the area was well presented and was very relaxing.

We hadn't booked dinner as the menu was overpriced and you only had 3 options if you had chosen the market menu. I therefore asked reception for recommendations and a great chap called James was more than helpful in offering not only names but was willing to book anything we wanted. On his recommendation we booked a table at the Bunk Inn. What a treat!! The food was amazing and for the area averagely priced. The taxi was £10 each way and would go back again and again.

Treatments were good if not short but that's always the way.

Overall this is a great hotel for a little break away and if you can get a deal, more so worthwhile as not sure I would pay the full priced asked.
