Perfect location for visiting the racecourse which was why we booked a one night stay with 3 of us sharing a triple bed room. Arrived at 7pm on a Friday evening and got straight down to enjoying the real ales on offer in the bar. Friday night was also steak night and excellent meals enjoyed by all. The room was perfectly adequate for a 1 night stay and at £79 for B&B it was a real bargain. Breakfast was excellent. The best thing however was the service from bar staff to waitress to owner nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely recommend to friends.

Room Tip: Triple room was exceedingly good value and perfect for a one night stay

Dear Steve

We are very humbled to receive some lovely reviews! The nicest thing for us as owner operators, is when our truly hard working staff get the credit we do believe they deserve.

Thanks for the review and hope to welcome you back soon

Stayed recently for three nights and found it very good value for money. The cooked breakfasts were consistently good (we had two, as on our first morning - a Sunday we had to leave at 8.00am just at the start of breakfast to catch a train to London). Ate in the restaurant one night with a party of six, most of us had three courses which were all served to a high standard and everyone enjoyed. Our friends are local to the area and had never eaten at the Hare and Hounds and they talked about trying the restaurant again.
I think the room we stayed in was a "Stable Double" which I had read somewhere was "small but perfectly formed - the bedroom was of a good size, well appointed and immaculately clean. The en suite was amazingly small! It was clean but the shower cubicle did have some mould which I would not have expected. I did mention this when checking out and was told they had had work done by "The Tile Doctor" and would not have expected this problem.
This was at least our third stay at the Hare and Hounds in as many years and we wouldn't return if we didn't think it to be good value for money, clean and a pleasant place to stay but I cannot agree with the many, many comments on the friendliness of the staff - yes they were courteous but the only member of staff to engage in any conversation was the young man who checked us in (he told us he is new), not once during our stay either at breakfast in the bar or restaurant were we asked if we were enjoying our stay, what had we been doing etc - and when checking out I mentioned about having stayed before and was greeted with - "have you really?" !!

Dear Ahmeek

So pleased that you enjoyed your stay. It was good to see you again and I am sorry that we had a couple of newer staff who did not recognise you.

The Stable rooms have all had brand new furniture since you left. They are undergoing a redecoration and will be finished by the end of November!

The shower had been affected by a chemical in our cleaning fluid, we have changed this but please trust me it is not through poor cleaning. This is also part of the refurbishment programme for stable.

See you again

Jonathan

Stayed for 5 nights at the Hare & Hounds with a group of 8 American ladies on an excursion to "Downton Abbey". It was a delightful experience shared by all - The food was excellent, very reasonable, in a 17th C. English coaching inn. We liked it more than a 5* glitzy city hotel! Thanks for the wonderful birthday celebration.

We were at an event at the racecourse, and needed something for one night. It was a last minute decision to stay over, so I phoned to check availability of a twin room, as it was me and my teenage son. The gentleman I spoke to was very accommodating, and did soe room juggling to fit us in, which was very appreciated.
We checked in about 5.30, and booked a table for dinner. The food was superb, and the service was excellent. My son has Aspergers, and is very particular about how his food is put on plate....but the staff did not have an issue with this at all, and made sure it was as he had asked. Very comfy beds, with good facilities.
Really made a difference to staying in an impersonal 'chain' hotel, and we will definitely look at staying there next time.

Dear Elaine

We are proud to be Independent and so pleased when we are able to meet particular requests. It really is the difference that a privately run hotel can bring.

Long may the Independents reign!

Thank You

We stayed three nights in early Sept. Loved it. We'd return to the Hare & Hounds if we're ever back in Newbury. No complaints or problems.
The walk into Newbury town center takes about 10-15 minutes. The staff are really wonderful.
The warm bonoffee pudding in the pub will make your eyes roll back in your head.

Dear Ray

We are very fortunate to have a very talented 2nd Chef who excels at puddings. We are currently developing new recipes to launch in 2014 with our new restaurant!

We will announce the full line up on facebook or our website, in the meantime we have a Lemon Curd Meringue Fool on trial!

Thanks for a lovely review.

I stayed for two nights, a warm welcome, comfortable room and service above and beyond what I'd expect. I'd recommend this and would stay again. Possibly the only fault I could pick out was that the sausages at breakfast weren't the best, but a minor issue for a great hotel.

We stayed here on August 31, 2013. We had second floor room with a separate living room area overlooking the garden. It was clean and very large. The hotel is close to the road, so you do have some road noise in your room during the day if the windows are open, but the road seems to get quiet at night so it doesn't affect sleeping. The pub had really good food - if you want to eat there in the evening, reservations might be necessary. We had reservations for 8 p.m. - by that time, the rush was starting to end, but the staff looked as if they had been running for quite a while. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was also good. 1 mile walk to Newbury shopping area. Less than 10 minute drive to Highclere Castle.

Dear anon37

Many thanks for a lovely review!

I'm glad you enjoyed our suite, with its separate lounge we believe it does represent our best value choice and it does tend to be very popular!

We look forward to looking after you again
