Lovely welcome, superb room, plenty of space, with a separate lounge, free wifi, and TV in both lounge and bedroom. Very clean room and bathroom, big comfy bed. Had an evening meal here and it was delicious and a fair price. Breakfast was equally good, full English, and all the usual suspects. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Will definitely be back as a stopover ...

Room Tip: We were in room 31. Nice size, no problems

We came straight from Heathrow and arrived early at the hotel, but it wasn't a problem. We were eagerly welcomed and we were even served complimentary drinks while waiting for our rooms to be ready. The rooms were clean and cozy complete with coffe/tea and cookies.Breakfast is cooked to order promptly and complete with fresh fruits and pastries. The hotel is a short cab ride from the train station, walking distance to town where there are some good restaurants and small shops. Highclere Castle is a few miles away and there is a small live theatre called The Watermill ,where they have brilliant productions.Overall we were happy with our 2 day stay at HARE AND HOUNDS! We highly recommend it.---Susan Zamora and family

Hi Susan

I trust the trip home was pleasant?

We certainly enjoy having many guests from the US coming over to visit Downton Abbey, and always recommend the Watermill Theatre as being that little bit unique to our area.

Please send our best wishes to all the ladies!

Your English Innkeeper, Jonathan, and his trusty and much appreciated fellow workers!!

We stayed here for Southern counties dog show and have to say rooms were beautiful and the dogs were allowed in and although ours are well behaved and sleep in there soft crates at night the person in the room above us didn't have much consideration and I think had a heard of elephants running around at 5am .....But have to say will most certainly go back.

Dear Potrail

Thank you for understanding that whilst we try hard to ensure our guest's comfort, we, as all hotels, do rely on other guests being as considerate as yourselves.

See you next year for the show, when our new restaurant extension, "The Barn" will be ready! (click our website link to view our stunning forthcoming addition! And to get our best available rate!)

Many thanks

We stayed for one night and booked after reading the good reviews and the fact that we were visiting Highclere Castle which was only 15 minutes down the road. The stay was good value but I feel you get what you pay for here. Our room was small but ok with tea/coffee making facilities, nice sized bathroom which looked quite new, the bed was awful, the mattress was very saggy so we did not get a good night's sleep and unfortunately we had extremely noisy people in the room above us. We ate in the restaurant and the service was very good, the chicken liver pate for starter was excellent but the lasagne a real let down, looked and tasted just like a frozen ready meal, although my husband's steak pie was good. The positives are the staff are really helpful and this hotel is in a great position if visiting Highclere, the chocolates were also a nice touch for booking with the hotel direct.

Dear PinaColada

I should point out firstly that we are actually a 2 star, but we do certainly aim to give a good 3 star service, and obviously we fell short of this here, for which I apologise. We normally are told that we offer good value, so once again sorry.

We are due our quarterly bed check with our supplier and will ensure the mattress is replaced.
We certainly cook all food fresh and I will discuss with our chefs, the presentation of the lasagne.

On a positive note, I am pleased the staff were their usual helpful and friendly selves.

Sincerely

Jonathan

We recently stayed for 1 night at the Hare and Hounds, as we were at a wedding in Thurston. We were greeted very warmly and checked in so easily. Because we were travelling from a fair distance away, I had called ahead to ask if we could check in early so that we could get changed for the wedding. This was no problem for them and they were very pleased to accommodate. We stayed in one of the stable rooms, which was great because we could park our car right outside our door. The room was clean and cosy. There were plenty of tea bags, coffee and hot chocolate. We did pop to the garage up the road to get some milk (as I like lots of tea). The bathroom was small, but fully functional. The shower did seem to take a while to get up to any sort of pressure, but it worked and it was clean.
The breakfast in the morning was great value. A lovely cooked breakfast, toast, tea and/or coffee. Different cereals, fruit juices and even pain au chocolats.
We had forgotten our toothpaste and lady at reception very kindly gave us hers.
Nothing was too much trouble and all was done with a smile. Would definitely stay there again and would highly recommend.

Dear gsygal

We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay! We are always happy to be able to accommodate early arrivals, and invariably are able to do so with notice.

We do have milk here, but i am guessing you fancied the walk? We have recently refurbished our "Stable" rooms, and whilst small we hope they are nicly formed!

Our staff are the stars of the show here and we are very lucky to work with a great bunch of people!

Thanks again

Just spent the bank holiday weekend at this lovely traditional Inn - the room was very clean and comfortable. The staff were absolutely brilliant - very friendly and efficient and worked very hard as the hotel was busy. The breakfast was excellent and plenty of it to set you up for the day. We ate in the restaurant on the Sunday evening and the menu is extremely varied - the food was superb and served piping hot and the portions very generous. Loved our stay and will hopefully return in the future.

Dear TiggyBlue

We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay!
Our food is certainly popular, both with our guests and in the local area.

We do believe in cooking breakfast fresh to order, yes it takes a little longer, but it's a great British tradition and we feel it deserves to be done properly!!

Look forward to welcoming you back, and thank you again
