Newbury can be a quite expensive place to eat, so if you are looking for value for money and enjoy a carvery, the Robin Hood is worth visiting. It's part of the Toby Carvery chain, and as such has four roasts that are carved for customers, and 8 vegetable dishes that are self service. On a busy Friday the restaurant was fully booked, but I was able to eat in the bar instead, carrying my plate round from the main serving area. (There's also a limited bar menu, mainly built round the same roast meats.) The vegetables were good - generally not soggy and overcooked (the cabbage was possibly the best I have had in a carvery), perhaps helped by being so busy, so kept fresh. The only nod to Newbury prices is that it's 30p more than my local Toby carvery.
Access is easy from the A34 Southbound - just take the A338 old road into Newbury, and it's on the left at the first roundabout/lights. This makes it a useful stopover if travelling South from the Midlands, and much better value than using something like Chieveley services.
