“Don't bother, but the views are fantastic!”
Review of Donnington Castle

Visited this ruin of a castle that really is just that, ruins so nothing to see but the great views up high of this area. You can drive nearly up to the top with a short walk at the end to the "castle". If pressed for time, don't bother. You haven't missed much. No fee to enter. Good on a sunny day.

The castle is rather small, and you are not allowed to enter the building. It's commanding vantage point is impressive, but you really need to know the history of the battles which raged thereabouts to make a visit truly interesting.
Judging by the numbers of soldiers who were billeted at the castle, they must have well and truly packed in!

As the English Heritage website says, "The striking twin-towered 14th-century gatehouse of this castle, later the focus of a Civil War siege and battle, survives amid impressive earthworks." It is quite impressive on the top of a hill. It is free to visit - at any reasonable time - though the roadsigns may be a bit misleading. There is a car park. If you happen to be passing, as we were, on a lazy Sunday afternoon, it makes a good break and interesting diversion.

Not much to see but we had a spare half hour so walked up to the gatehouse and walked around in the sun and looked at the vista
