“Great stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2014

My friend and I stopped there for 2 nights visiting the area last week. The staff were more than helpful, room spacious and very clean, plenty of toiletries and extra's in the room.
They also serve food which is of the highest quality and expertly cooked. If your ever visiting the surround area and need somewhere to stop I cannot recommend this place enough.

I'm not sure what the Bunk is trying to be, it's without doubt had a lovely transformation and is a very pleasant pub with a lovely interior. It's glitsy web site claims it want to be a community pub where you can enjoy a pint packet of crisps and enjoy good food. Well based on our recent trip with a group of friends I'm not sure whether it's a pub or a restaurant because there was no "pub food" on offer just a menu that many of us didn't understand at top London prices. The trendy Graze part of the menu was disappointing tasteless pork crackling , dull bread at £3.50 a go and rather strange deep friend broccoli followed by the outrageous £15 for a dried meat platter consisting of meagre pieces of dried meat then £12 for a lamb burger are good examples of silly prices that people will judge by whether they return .Even the basic fish and chips was disappointing, big chunky chips not cooked properly , and fish that was mainly skin than fish with a thin tartar sauce served in a fancy pot with a few crushed frozen peas. What was missing was well cooked simple pub fare , home made pies , a good pasta dish or maybe a chicken dish rather than the chicken sausage at £16 a go ! I totally understand and respect pubs trying to be top end gastro pubs but there is a limited market, we went on a Saturday night and the place not all busy , maybe there's a message there . Our waitress was delightful mind shame I didn't know her name and she was on hand when one of our wooden chairs collapsed as one of our party sat down to eat !

We eat here a lot, and whether it is a group of you on a busy Saturday night or a quick weekday meal, the food and service is always top form.

I'm vegetarian and whilst there wasn't a huge choice on the menu, the chef was happy to whip up something specially for me which was delicious and appreciated. Waitresses are also always lovely and really friendly!

Ate here last week, did not stay. Excellent pork crackling grazing dish and fish & chips to die for. Excellent service as well. However wine list is limited and expensive as they mostly sell French wines. Would still recommend though.

With its close access to Newbury, the A34 and the M4, the Bunk Inn is excellently located for both a pleasure visit or a business trip. The Inn has ample parking at the rear and the road at the front is an extremely quiet road.

The rooms are large, clean, and well decorated; the beds are comfy and the showers have copious quantities of hot water. With a Freeview TV and WiFi access in every room you can have a peaceful evening in your own room. More interesting is to go into the restaurant/bar where you will have the choice of four local ales along with the a couple of lagers for those who have yet learnt to appreciate a cask ale. A selection of wines and spirits will ensure that every palate is catered for.

To ballast out the alcohol, the chef has some good food on offer. On recent visits I've had salt beef on a herb mash, a well presented plate of venison, and confit of pork belly. Each dish was correctly proportioned and accompanied by a well chosen selection of vegetables, pulses or greens as required. I'd requested a serving of chips, cooked in beef dripping and served with mustard mayonnaise and tomato sauce, to complete the meal; was a bit "eyes bigger than belly" .

The Bunk Inn has a good local customer base so I would recommend that you book a table and consider choosing your meal at the same time lest your choice has ran out.

Breakfast is enjoyable with a couple of nice variations such as a smoked bacon and duck yolk butty. Ample tea and coffee are provided. The dining area is music free in the mornings which I count as a blessing after having to suffer "disco breakfasts" at other hotels.

Mobile phone coverage is patchy in the Curridge area and the downstairs area of the Bunk Inn is no exception. Outside in the garden area and in the upstairs rooms will allow you to regain contact if you must.

Staff are friendly and communicative as are the locals.

Room Tip: Upstairs if you want to have mobile phone coverage.

Our 2nd visit on friday eve. Despite booking a table and being there on time, we were asked to wait which was fine. On trying to order from the menu, we were told that they had run out of steak, burgers and one of the specials. It was 8pm.... We then waited over an hour for our food to arrive. When we have feedback to the manager, we were told that Fridays are busy. No apology or a complementary drink for our wait, we were even charged for the basket of bread consumed whilst we waited.. The food was good when it arrived, however this is the 2nd time we've been there and the service isn't good enough for the prices charged.
