“Don't expect a good service.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 October 2009

The hotel failed to tell us about the building work that was ongoing during our stay. The manager was rude and tried to tell us it was our fault for water leaking on the floor. The room was ok although it tilted which was a bit strange. The bath was amazing although apparently you have to pay £129 per night for the use of the jacuzzi and the water is the slowest draining I have ever seen. Watch out for the step half way up the corridor. It is not highlighted and is extremely easy to trip over. If you want a cheap night and are really not bothered about an ounce of service and being treated as an inconvenience then this is the place for you!

It's unfair to grade this as a hotel as I didn't stay overnight, but work close by and my firm arranged a last minute Xmas meal there, as the previous place went out of business!

To say it was dreadful was an understatement. It made school dinners a positively gourmet experience. Huge trays of vegetables came with the tastless turkey.... the brocoli was hopelessly overcooked and the carrots - swimming in water - were so unpalatable, they had to be spat out. They had clearly been served before.

In fact the food was so dreadful and so much was left over that we deliberately sabotaged it so it could not be offered to other sufferers later. The staff were disinterested and offhand, we had to search out staff to ask for our (microwaved) Xmas pudding and the best part was the Tescos mince pies. No wonder the place was almost otherwise deserted - in mid-December,when other establishments were heaving!

Never again. The pub's our nearest and fine for a drink and accommodation may be ok, but on that December day in 2008, the food was totally awful.

I stayed at the Queens several times for up to eight days at a time during June and July. Without doubt Dave and Anne, who were the hosts when I stayed the first time, ran a tight ship and service was first class. This 'Pub Hotel' had been refurbished and the rooms are exceptional. The food good and the atmosphere very friendly. If there was the slightest problem then Dave dealt with it straight away.

The staff work well together and even on their days off come into the bar and socialise. They are a young team, enthusiastic and keen to please they are very proffessional and welcoming.

When Dave and Anne left for pastures new there were a succession of relief Managers. The team was unsettled and it took a few days before things settled down to the previous high standards set before.

Sometimes breakfast service was slow and you might find that a reminder is needed for toast for example. The dinner menu is varied and plentiful although several pies and puddings are baked off the premises by commercial bakers and its difficult to give them credit for basically part cooking one.

The hotel is right in the town centre so noise at weekends from the many bars could be a problem if you want 100% peace and quiet.

None of this should detract though from the overall ambiance of the Queens. Great staff, good food, excellent rooms and an excellent standard of customer service should outweigh any other issues you might find a problem

I stayed at the Queens Hotel for one night on a business trip because this pub/hotel could not have a more convenient location, right on the market place in the centre of Newbury. The rooms appear to be divided into two distinct areas: some are upstairs above the pub, and some are in a separate annex building (like a converted stable block) outside in the car park. I was in this latter building.

Positives:

* Excellent location
* Cheap
* Reasonably priced food in the pub
* Check-in went smoothly
* Bed was quite comfortable.

Negatives:

* When I arrived at my room it wasn't ready (despite being well past the check in time) and the maid was still cleaning. When I got back, it seemed like the maid had only half-finished; although the beds were made and towels set out, the bathroom had not been tidied up after cleaning.

* Although the room was in generally good decorative order, the carpet was very worn and dirty, presumably because the room door opened directly onto the car park, and as it was a rainy day, damp was trailed in very easily.

* It was a very windy night, and the door was draughty with the wind whistling loudly through the cracks.

* Room was pretty small with not a lot of space to walk around the bed.

* Rudely awoken in the morning by the sound of a car alarm going off in the car park right outside the room door.

* Although the food was reasonably priced and tasty when it arrived, they got the order wrong twice and one dessert had to be sent back as it was completely frozen.

Although I can't be certain as I didn't see any of the rooms within the pub itself, if you're thinking of staying here I would suggest trying to get a room upstairs, as most of the problems with the room can be attributed to its location outside in the noisy car park. Otherwise, although this was an OK stay for one night, I can't really recommend it any further than that.
