Description: Tucked away in Newbury is the Newbury Manor Hotel, home to the River Bar restaurant. Set by the water, the River Bar offers exciting and innovative cuisine that is sourced from the best, local markets. The dining room is elegantly furnished and offers superb views of the hotel grounds. The a la carte menu offers dishes that are presented superbly, such as mushroom risotto with Sauternes jelly, sea bass with scallops and saffron mash and pork belly with toffee apples. Desserts are equally inviting; why not try the Newbury Manor Stranoffee? Three courses of this international cuisine costs an average of £35 per person.

“Plenty of potential”
Reviewed 21 July 2014 via mobile

Beautiful settings surround this rather pretty restaurant on the river. There is a large decking area and the gardens are also beautiful.

Sadly the rest of the evening didn't live up to its first impression. Unhappy staff, warm food and rather salty dishes were quite over priced for the quality.

No separate children's menu or consideration for families and we repeatedly had to ask for extra items that were ordered. This was on a Tuesday night so they weren't exactly rushed off their feet.

Finally, I agree with the previous review, the whole place needs a good wash down. It's a real shame because it really is beautiful

“Nice food”
Reviewed 14 July 2014 via mobile

The food here is lovely. Everything I ever ordered had an amazing taste. It a beautiful setting on the river. I feel it needs a bit of tender, love and care as the venue is in a perfect location. The windows are so filthy they look black. It needs some paint around the river bar. The grass had dog poo on it. The parasol had a big tesco label on it. The decking needs a big scrub. Just minor things that will improve the restaurant. When I was seated outside I picked up on all these things

“Beer with good ambiance...”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

I feel the garden like ambiance and I enjoyed the beer. Great place but a little far from Regency park and requires a taxi drop back.

“Service slow!”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

This is the second time we have been here the first time was great, went again last night with our grown up family for our 25th wedding anniversary, very slow to come and take our drinks order then our drinks were sat on the bar for 10 minutes before they were brought over, we then waited 3/4 hour before staff decided to come and take our food order , then it was at least another 1/2 to 3/4 hour before our food came, my husband had the gammon, which was over cooked and it said on the menu salad which never turnt up! Wouldn't say there were lots of people there the staff just didn't seem to know what they were doing we had 3 different staff serving us at different times, menu wasn't great, the food was good but never left a tip!! Not sure we'd go back, also there were a large group there and they were very noisy!

“Looking tatty and food quality not great”
Reviewed 4 June 2014 via mobile

Unfortunately for a venue in a great setting on the river, it has been let down by a lack of maintenance and cleanliness. The car park needs weeding, windows and carpets in the restaurant need a good clean.
The food was not cooked well, scallops pale, cold and unappetising. The starter of a truffled velouté was overly creamed. Staff chatted at the bar and had to be called to gain their attention. A shame as it is in a great location.
