“Lovely Staff!”
Reviewed 16 July 2012

This was a warm and friendly hostel. The staff were very cheerful and happy to help us with all our needs, including helping us plan walks and even lent us a map. We had some evening meals which were good and very quick! The hostel seems to have been re-decorated since our last visit which looked good.

We really enjoyed our stay in a beautiful part of the country.

After reading the previous reviews we were extremely apprehensive about staying. We arrived early, not knowing the protocol, and had a very warm welcome from Tim. He showed us the available rooms & advised us to come back at 5pm. Yes the property is tired and needs some TLC but it is spotlessly clean & the staff friendly/helpful. The showers & toilets are adequate, kitchen facilities clean all working.
We had a wonderful three days here and would recommend it to anyone. In fact we are planning to return in October. Jo & her team work long hard hours in an old building which will never be perfect but they are doing the best they can.

I have just returned from a short 3 night break on Exmoor staying at the Youth Hostel in Exford. A beautiful village in the heart of the National Park, with two great pubs, both serving food and family friendly. The Hostel in situated right in the centre of the village with a large garden surrounded on most sides by the river Exe (which has a shallow area accessible from a grassy bank, great for the kids in the summer!). The room that we had in the Hostel had been freshly painted over the winter and had brand new matresses on all beds, speaking to the Hostel staff (Jo, I think??!!) many rooms have been decorated and new matresses throughout. The building is old and more decoration is needed but all areas that we used were clean. Great walking straight from the door and a Fish and Chip van came to the village one night we were there, fantastic it was too!!

A great Hostel in a great location. My family and I will certainly be going back!

This was my first experience of a youth hostel and it was unfortunate it was this one! The room we had was unbelievably tiny, bunk beds with approximately a foot of space alongside them and a sink. There was no room even to get dressed properly the walls were also paper thin and there were big gashes out of the plasterboard. Otherwise the communal areas, showers, dining room, TV room and kitchen were clean and well presented. We had paid £50/night for the room as it was bank holiday so even though it’s a hostel I would expect better for my money.

The location is good for walking which is the reason we were in the area, and there are also a couple of nice pubs within walking distance.

Good location in heart of Exmoor, excellent for walkers, cyclists etc. Beaches approx half hour drive. Village is at the bottom of a valley, so no mobile phone signal, and radio reception in car is intermittent.
Hostel staff are polite and freindly, although one night the reception was closed from approx 8.15pm for the rest of the evening. The self catering kitchen is small and gets very busy at times.
Stayed in two different rooms due to "relief manager, and booking systems hiccup". First room was a 4 bedded ( 2x bunk beds) room was small, and also had the fire exit to the outside. Which raises the question what happens in the event of a fire, if other guests have to get through a locked bedroom door to acces the fire exit. Second room was bigger with 6 beds (3x bunk beds) and ensuite. The room was damp, had mould growing on the walls and ceiling, and had what appeared to be mouse droppings on the beds. The toilet are was so small, the door could not be closed properly when using the toilet.
The hostel manager was rather dismissive, saying the room had previously been treated for damp, and it was just staining from the previous problems. And suggested the "mouse droppings" were actually mud from the kids shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!! I may live in a city but I know the difference between mouse and mud.
Definitely not the best youth hostel I have stayed in, but given that we paid £29 a night with the summer special deal, it did offer some value for money. However if paying full price I might think twice.

Fantastic location, in centre of picturesque village of Exford, heart of Exmoor National Park. Ideal for walkers, cyclists etc. Also great for access to North Devon and Somerset beaches (eg Woolacombe and Minehead).
Staff friendly and helpful although conspicuous by their absence on occasions.
Lovely gardens surrounding main building with babbling brook (River Exe I think). Dining and lounge areas both good and clean. Self catering kitchen well maintained, had 4 cookers, only 2 small fridges and could get a little busy.
Stayed in two different rooms due to availability, first room was in old part of building and was frankly dirty, cobwebs hanging from ceiling and floor had not been vacuumed. Didn’t help that night the boiler packed up therefore had to have cold showers! Second room was in newer part of building, it was cleaner but had 3 beds squeezed into what should have been a 2 bed room, there was nowhere for bags – these had to be kept on foot of bed or blocking door which was potential hazard.
In both rooms all 3 beds had mattresses that had seen better days – it felt like sleeping in a bowl because the centre was so dipped, however the duvets and pillows were either fairly new or better quality.
All in all, it’s not the best YHA I have stayed in (!) but it has potential and for a short stay in great location and we only paid £29 per night on a special deal – we still had an enjoyable trip. If paying full price £54 for a family room I might consider looking for a Travelodge or similar.
