“lovely friendly hotel”
Reviewed 20 July 2013

Three friends and I stayed at this hotel in July 2013 for two nights. We all found the hotel very comfortable and our host, Naomi, could not have been more accommodating. Breakfast is normally served from 8.30 on a Saturday but she was there, up and smiling, with a delicious cooked breakfast at 7am as requested. Naomi was even at hand, late at night, when we asked cheekily for refreshing coffee and biscuits in the lounge after our exhausting day.
All four of our rooms on the top floor were delightful and I am looking forward to staying at Marston Lodge again.

Room Tip: There are a lot of stairs so some guests may wish to ask for a room on a lower floor.

We stayed here 3 nights.

Marston Lodge is a B&B perched on a hill in a suburban setting overlooking Minehead. I counted 13 steps from the street level to the foyer of the property. There are 5 parking spaces, 12 bedrooms, and therefore when full, and if all bedrooms have a car, 8 cars are on the street.

We stayed in room 12 which is on the 3rd floor. I counted 35 steps up from the foyer to this loft style room. It has excellent views over Minehead and the beach. It has no bar fridge or safe. There is a window that can be opened. The two bedside lights didn't work.

The bathroom fan doesn't work. There is no window so the toilet smells and shower steam have only one place to go, the bedroom. There is no toilet paper roll holder. The shower is difficult to set at the correct water flow and temperature, a small error results in the water flowing back into the bath instead of up into the shower. The towels are good.

Breakfast is delicious. Eggs are from the "back yard", other ingredients tasty and all is good.

The lounge area and other public areas for the guests are comfortable and inviting.

An honesty bar is provided in the billiard room.

It is a steep walk down, and UP, to the nearest restaurant, Fausto's, which is very good.

Would we stay here again? No. Because of the access, i.e., steps to the rooms and gradients down to the town. If that's not an issue for you, then book and you'll find it's a comfortable stay.

My wife booked this as a present. I just had an operation and she thought it would be nice to get away for a bit.
The hotel itself was nicely situated just out of the town centre, but within 5 mins walk. There is parking but only 3 spaces, however there is parking literally on the road just outside, so no problems there.
The house was very clean and very well appointed for a small hotel. There is an honesty bar, nice residents lounge and pool table just off the bar. The room (no 3) was nice and large and had a little but adequate en-suite. The decor is ok, the paintings perhaps were not to my taste but thats largely immaterial. The room was generally very good, very quiet and with a quality bed (great bed in fact) which gave a really good nights sleep.
The breakfast was awesome and i mean AWESOME. Normally after i fried breakfast i think cant have one of them again for a while, not the case here. Everything is locally sourced and really tasty, they even have their own chickens! Honestly breakfast was superb.
However what make this place is the owners, Alex and his wife (Naomi i believe) absolutely make this place the best little hotel i have ever stayed in. The local knowledge Alex has is brilliant and best of all he his very happy to share this and give advice on where to go. He asked one morning as to what we had planned and suggested that we view things off the beaten track. He gave us this route and map to which we followed. It was amazing, little villages and back roads, walks and more. It took us all day. We never went to Minehead at all really. The next day we did another one of his routes, again excellent. I don't normally rave like this in reviews but Exmore is stunning and Marston Lodge is a great place to stay when your there.
Oh and make sure you follow the road past the hotel, past the church and up the hill to North hill, as its a little gem.

This is an excellent family-run hotel where guests are made very welcome by Alex and his wife. Alex is a mine of local information and advice which contributes to the overall ambience. It's like staying in an art gallery / library. We would recommend it unreservedly. Graham P

It was a lovely, refurbished house with an ecclectic collection of furniture and artwork. The breakfast was very yummy, and Alex pointed to us the best way around to navigate exmoor national park. The garden, which he encourages you to walk around, is lovely - and it is great to see real 'free range' chickens!

Lovely hotel, ideal location with beautiful views. Alex is an extremely warm and welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable host and nothing was too much trouble for him. Delicious breakfast with local produce, especially eggs from the on-site hens which my ten year old son enjoyed collecting. A great place to stay.

This family-run hotel is just lovely. What can be nicer than friendly, personal attention, clean accommodation,a great breakfast and a lovely atmosphere.

Add to that a good location for sight-seeing (helped by advice from 'mine host') and the scene for a great break is set !

Oh, and don't forget the chickens and chicks in the tranquil gardenand their sheep-dog buddy, Tip.

Thank you Alex and Naomi.
