Description: The Smugglers Inn offers a cosy bar, a delightful restaurant and accommodation by the sea at Blue Anchor Bay in Somerset. We are on the edge of Exmoor and the Quantock hills and make a perfect base for walking holidays. The West Somerset steam railway runs through Blue Anchor and the station is just along the road at the end of the bay. Blue Anchor beach is a long sandy beach and is just across the road from the Inn.

“Could be sinking in the Blue Anchor mud !!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2014

The Smugglers Retreat has now changed back to the Smugglers Inn after a change of ownership. The food was average 'pub grub', ok but not exciting. The main problem is there is something lacking, no front of house personality, just a bland cold atmosphere. The old army photo graphs have been replaced with bare walls and a screw jutting out!!!

One improvement is the better choice of drinks on the pumps, including Doombar.
If the Smugglers is going to survive it needs to develop a more welcoming environment.
As the old school reports say, ' Must try harder'

“Family Restaurant”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2014 via mobile

Good location, good service, food good (in particular the ale pie). Nice decour, bar and beer garden. On the minus side nothing really stood out on the menu and the prices were on higher side of average. Summarizing our visit, it was OK but nothing to make us want to rush back.

“Enjoyable”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2014

All 4 of us had a good meal, Mussels were fantastic, Cajun steaks and cod okay, not sure why there are a few moans about customer service, we were very well served and all staff were lovely. Great place to go for a good meal and a pint. Its not haute cuisine but neither is it trying to be. A nice outdoor area too.

“Dissapointed!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014 via mobile

We looked up reviews to go out for a nice meal and this was the place which had the most good reviews. Why?? I don't know.
Don't get me wrong 3 out of 5 meals were actually very nice. The Cod, the Lamb & the Prawn linguine.

However the steak that was ordered was disgusting. I know this can be due to butchers...
My mother sent hers back after asking for it rare and it coming out nearly well done.
Then after waiting for a new one AGAIN it came out medium.
How hard is if to cook a rare steak come on.
My grandads was equally tough as old boots and he struggled the whole way through trying to work his way through it as he didn't want to make a fuss and complain also.
This left us with my mother eating nothing atall.
Another thing was that they weren't given a steak knife and when ordering steak that is a must surely we all know this and when my mother complained the second time about her steak the waitress actually turned around and said "can I get you a steak knife would that help" .... Lost for words on that.

When ordering a rum and coke I didn't get asked how much coke I wanted in it so my partner ended up with a rum and coke full to the top of the glass which I sent back and got asked "well what's wrong with it?"

Upon leaving and paying the ever so kindly removed one steak off of the bill but not both to then the miserable young girl serving with glasses actually argued with me about the steak saying it was pink when it was sent out multiple times!
If it was PINK my mother would've eaten the meal why would she go hungry?

APPAULING customer service, rude staff, we clearly went on a bad day. Don't bother. They definately need some lessons on customer care!

“Family dinner with great local mussels”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2014

Our B&B hosts at the Langbury down the road arranged a late table for us at the Smugglers, and the staff at the restaurant were very pleasant & helpful even though we were keeping them a bit late. The food was great, especially the local mussels!
