We started our trip at Bishops Lydeard Station. On the journey to Minehead we had a fantastic Sunday lunch. The service was excellent, and the food was wonderful. After a couple of hours in Minehead, we caught the train back, with a very tasty cream tea. A lovely day on a very nostalgic steam train.

We travelled on the West Somerset Railway on a wonderfully sunny day in May. The noise and steam and sheer excitement of seeing the beautifully cared for engines took us back to our childhood. The trip through the beautiful Somerset countryside was wonderful, wild flowers bloomed along the embankments and the stations were a blaze of colour, with volunteers working hard on the gardens. The slow meander through the villages from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard evoked memories of seaside holidays years ago, it was like a step back in time. The staff are friendly and very helpful, there is a good buffet car service and volunteers keep the carriages clean and tidy. Looking at our fellow passengers it was clear to see that it was an experience that brings a smile to faces, lots of happy, laughing people, having a good day out. We would thoroughly recommend it to anyone, adults, children, tots and dogs, everyone is welcome on board.

Oh the nostagia! The excitement and drama of steam. Beautiful scenery, helpful friendly staff. Expensive yes but no more so than many other attractions which offer far less.
Having read other reviews I was a bit concerned about taking my baby grandson in his rather large pushchair but the staff helped us get it in and out of the guards van and it was all very straightforward Couldn't get it into the carriage but after all this is a heritage railway with old fashioned size carriage doors, so what else can you expect?

Family of 4, kids aged 3 and 6 at the time, really enjoyed it. Staff all really friendly. Got on at Bishops Lydeard and travelled to Minehead for a day on the beach. Minehead train station is a short, 2 minute stroll to the lovely sandy beach. We had a lovely day on the beach and travelled back, so it was a great day out. When the children are a bit older, I'd love to go again and stop at Dunster castle. Really reasonable day out and you can pay by Tesco vouchers, which is great when travelling on a budget with the family. We'd recommend it and will definitely go again if we're in the area.
