“A DELIGHTFUL DAY OUT”
Reviewed 22 August 2014

Travelled from South Devon with my wife and took full advantage of a day rover (BOGOF offer). We found the stations beautifully kept, and the locomotives and carriages beautifully clean. Light refreshments were very sensibly priced. Free car parking at Bishops Lydeard was a bonus. All of the staff were extremely helpful and polite and cannot praise them enough. We will go again and hope to camp nearby so that we can spend a few days around the railway.

“You don't have to be a railway buff to enjoy this...”
Reviewed 22 August 2014

...but it helps! A varied collection of mainly former GWR steam locomotives offers a decent length journey across some scenic countryside. It is not a cheap day out; a day ticket allows unlimited stops, but you need to look at the timetable and plan your itinerary in advance to get the most from it. We particularly liked stopping at Watchet but other visitors will have their own preferences. One or two stops have very little to offer the casual traveller. There is a nice cafe at the terminus at Minehead and the buffet car on the train is very handy.

“A trip down memory lane”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

The West Somerset Railway from Bishops Lydeard (near Taunton) to Minehead is the longest standard gauge heritage railway in the UK The 20-mile journey (usually behind a restored GWR steam locomotive) is fabulous with views of the Somerset countryside, babbling streams, Quantock Hills, Brendon Hills, Bristol Channel (and on a clear day Steepholme Island and Cardiff Bay) and Dunster Castle. Sit on the seafront at Minehead and enjoy some yummy fish and chips. Great day out for all ages. Highly recommended!!
