This was a great weekend of entertainment. Madness were excellent and all round entertainment was value for money. The food was value for money, good selection and the food areas were exceptionally clean. However the rooms were a lot to be desired, Very 1960's with a shower and no space to swing your arms let alone a cat. But they were clean and I had a better sleep than I do at home. We arrive at night to a very badly lit car park and had trouble finding our chalet/room. Therefore even though the accommodation was so, so. The over all experience was great and good value. The last afternoon we were in the local Wetherspoons with some other guests from Butlins, what a great time.

Having not visited Butlins for over a decade I thought I'd give it a go and booked a self-catering Festive Fun pre-Christmas weekend for myself, adult children and 3 grandchildren aged between 12 and 15 months.. We went with high hopes based on the promise of the Butlins website - but we were left disappointed as nothing lived up to the PR and advertising blurb. And we won't be rushing back any time soon.

Let me start with good. The weather was in our favour and it was dry enough to go out and enjoy the free rides on the funfair. Splashworld is also good - but is very popular and hence there are long queues for the rides. It's also clear that Butlins is trying to bring itself into the 21st century but hasn't quite made it. The Skyline pavillion does offer a large indoor meeting point and place to go - but is married by the fact half of it seems to be an amusement arcade.

Now let me move on to the bad. Well. expect to pay, pay and pay for anything that isn't in the outdoor fun fair -which seems to be most of the things the kids want to do. Bungee trampolines - £5 a go, go-carts £5, adventure golf £2.50 per person and the list goes on. The Festive Fun was also in short supply. Let's start with the panto. Although it was a ticketed event, the ticket did not guarantee you a seat so people were queueing for hours to get into centre stage. The result was anyone arriving (like us) half an hour before found nowhere to sit and the place absolutely heaving. It took us a mammoth search to find a spot to sit down - and then as soon as the show began we wondered why we had bothered - and left before the end.

They also promise reindeer - in reality two poor beasts tethered in a pen between the go-karts and the fun fair. Hardly, the magic of Christmas!! Much fanfare was also made about the Winter Wonderland Grotto. Again, if you are yet to visit this don't get your hopes up. It's basically an emplty building prettied up with some white carpet, a few trees and a bit of white plastic and twinkly lights. However, the kids did get to see Santa and were given a Christmas selection pack.

As for the ugly - well that's the accommodation, which is still very Hi-de-hi. Our sliver-plus bungalow was just about as basic as it gets. When we arrived it was bitterly cold and the chalet was like an ice box. And it took 24 hours to warm it up. Cleanliness also left much to be desired, and the beds are the smallest I've ever seen with a metal frame similar to a put you up. Mattresses were also lumpy and had seen better days.

Butlins - if you want to compete and attract families then you need to put in a lot more effort and deliver decent accommodation. It would also be helpful to install a bit more street lighing for those in chalets at the edge of the site.

Room Tip: Don't book silver accommodation.

firstly i just want to say overall it was an amazing time, me and my family and a friend of mine(i'm 15) stayed at butlins minehead in august 2012. i can even say its better than disneyland. although the breakfast wasn't very exciting and by the time we got to breakfast the little potato things were horrible and cold and the sausages all oily but that didnt bother me(and it shouldnt bother you)

the accomodation was really nice and although the beds were only camp bed style they were suprisingly comfortable! we had a few problems though with the noise at about 3 in the morning and had to get security down as it was getting a bit much(shouting and screaming and doors being slammed all the time)

the entertainment was very good and whilst we were there the loveable rogues from britains got talent were there! we got to meet them at a meet and greet as well and we all enjoyed it! Kids who are 6 and 5 loved the lazytown show they thought it was brilliant. at about 11.00pm we went to the glee force show, that was a bit dissapointing as most of the entertainers weren't very good at singing and seemed very old and extremely tired by the end of it! redcoats were really nice and friendly though, people complain about the staff being moody and horrible; as if they dont want to be there but i thought they were all very kind and helpful.. don't know why they complain ITS AMAZING!
deffinately worth visiting butlins although it is pricey its awesome
we have decided to go at christmas time next year and in august again, can't wait
i hope this gave you an idea of how fun and entertaining butlins minehead is and encourages you to go there!!

Room Tip: i reccomend a silver appartment

We booked for a family Christmas fantasy break as we couldn't afford winter wonderland at centre parcs ( I'm glad because I think for our family butlins is much better). I am a complete snob when it comes to accommodation and holidays and after reading reviews on here I was questioning what we had booked!
However from the minute we arrived i was pleasently surprised. we were greeted at the entrance and directed to check in. Check in took all of 5 mins despite being an hour early we were able to check in to an upgraded accommodation. Basic but clean and completely adequate! ( come on you complainers if you want five star don't book! Can't comment about deluxe or blue skies, but seriously in this life you pay for what you get). We were really pleased with the bungalow.
We opted for premium dining, lots of choice, could bd warmer but being a mum to two young children I'm used to lukewarm! Staff were all very friendly and helpful.
Now to the best bit, the entertainment, how overwhelming! There is so much to do, it's fantastic. No need to spend a penny. We have a two year old and five month old so admittedly they don't really want. I'm sure older kids will want to play on arcade games etc. the staff are amazing, they work really hard and very friendly. Father Christmas was great. Pantomime fantastic. It's only Saturday and we've got Sunday to go, but want to return next year with more family. Noise and disturbance has not been an issue for us.
Don't expect five star, take it for what it is. A family holiday camp with fantastic facilities.

Wow of wow what an amazing weekend. Just git home from the big music weekend called Skool reunion. With big names like A1, Chesney Hawkes, Damage and Big Bruvas. The entertainment was first rate. Excellent. Fantastic. Reds night club was brilliant playing a ride selection of dance music. People love to wear fancy dress all weekend which makes for a funny time. There's plenty of restaurants to choose from or you can cook for yourself in your chalet. The chalets was a good size with everything you need including a cooker oven and all the utensils. The only thing they need ti improve on is the shower which was pathetic. I would of got more pressure from a garden hose and it was impossible to get the right temperature as it switched from scalding hot to freezing cold. It was also very noisy with other young residents shouting send playing loud music. But if your out all night partying yourself then this will not bother you. This place is certainly not the place to go for a relaxing weekend. But if your looking for an adrenalin filled action packed weekend then this is the place to be. There is also a lot to do during the day with activities including a big swimming pool with slides, football, basketball, a fun fair, cinema, bowling and arcade games. I certainly cant wait to go back to another big music weekend at butlins minehead

We went to Butlins Minehead TWICE within a 2 week period during October/November. The first trip was for the grandchildren to have a Monday to Friday "Halloween Break". We stayed in Silver accommodation and ate in the Buffet RestUrant. Chalet was well equipped and warm and cozy and the food was excellent with massive choices. The entertainment was spot on for both adults and children and all in all we had a BRILLIANT STAY. - thoroughly recommend it.

Our second stay was a Peter Andre weekend and the concert venue was organised excellent - went on this trip with girlfriends ans we all had a marvellous time. My friends couldn't get over the Chalet's, quality and quantity of food and the excellent entertainment - some of our friends had never been before but said will definately go again. We used the same type of accommodation and food outlet as above - well worth every penny
