“Kids loved it”

Having been to Butlins for 14 years we have noticed many changes over the years - this year though we had the most fabulous weather ever. The quality of the gold apartments was good and although usually we choose premium dining this was not an option as it was full, we choose standard instead and saved quite a bit of money in doing so! The food was good and plenty of choice and availability, all the staff were attentive and happy to talk to us. The dining area we were in was not air conditioned and with the heat it would have been welcomed - however we probably would choose standard dining in future and save money.
One noticeable factor was the increase in the children's grab machine 30p a go, they were 20p last year and 20p initially in minehead town although the arcades put theirs up too in the middle of the week. Also 50p (inside skyline) for a bit of onion on a hot dog was a bit expensive I felt. it was only 25p outside in the fairground.
The new fun fair was liked by the children and they had a great time along with splash water world . The nice thing this year was the amount of time we were able to spend on the beach - with it just across the road from our apartment it was easy to take the dingy, chairs etc.

Six family members one with wheelchair had two gold apartments with premium dining. Excellent check in and very helpful staff. Apartment very clean and staff called to ask if all was OK. Asked for additional towels and these were delivered straight away, One hairdryer not working and again this was replaced very quickly. Very impressed with the dining. Stayed there two years ago and now much improved. Deck dining room very cool and airy and excellent choice of food and good quality. Have some fussy eaters in the party but they were well satisfied. Particularly enjoyed the circus - one of the best we have ever seen. Again staff very helpful with the wheelchair seating. Enjoyed the pool which was very clean. Not always easy to get a seat at the evening entertainment but what we saw was very good. Our only downside was the noise from seagulls which even continued during the night but we were near the entrance and I believe it is not so bad further into the centre. Family enjoyed the funfair and all other activities. Have booked for 2015 as good deal on offer and would definitely return again.

We arrived on the 25th July for a 3 night stay, we had a 2 bedroomed silver apartment which had one double and 2 single beds and it was fine, very clean and big enough, for 4 people, beds could have been more comfy but I've certainly slept on a lot worse. Whole site was kept clean and tidy, plenty of places to eat, lots of entertainment for the kids during the day, which the children's entertainment team worked very hard to keep all the kids happy, making sure they had a good time. and for the adults at night there was plenty of shows, my 2 moans are
1) there is too much that you now have to pay extra for and at £5 per person per ride etc... it soon adds up to a lot of money when there is 4 of you, a lot of which used to included in the price of your holiday,
2) My granddaughter and grandson queued for up to 15 minutes for photos with characters about 3 times a day and each time the staff suddenly cut the queue in front of them and told them they couldn't have the photo done as the character had run out of time. When I complained about this the staff just said "nothing I can do about it and if you don't like it you can complain to the manager". so in the 3 days we were there, the kids didn't get one photo with any of the characters.
But on the whole most staff were polite, helpful and genuinely acted like they wanted to be there and enjoyed their jobs.

Just got back from our fifth trip to Butlins Minehead in as many years and there are lots of reasons we keep going back. I've read some quite bad reviews on here, but we've never had any of the problems that others have mentioned. We've always nearly always stayed in silver (once in deluxe) and found the accommodation to be really good. The silver apartments have been refurbished in the last couple of years and are now bright and modern, with pretty much everything you need. This year we were upgraded to a silver bungalow which gave us a bit more room. I have to day though that the fixtures (wardrobes and doors) seemed a little more dated than what we'd had in the apartments - but still fine for somewhere that you spend very little time in. And I've certainly never had any complaints about cleanliness. The first time we went we tried self catering to save money and ended up eating out every night. Since then we've always taken the dining package so that it's all paid for before you go. Even with the standard package we found plenty of choice and extremely clean and well stocked restaurants. We've never had to wait for a table or had to clean away other people's mess to be able to eat ourselves, something which is so common in many other places. There are cleaning teams that keep all the tables clear at all times, and the trays, plates and cutlery never seem to run out. When the food runs out at busy times, it always seems to be replenished really quickly. However last year, when the new premium restaurant, The Deck, opened, we noticed a drop in food quality in standard dining and decided to upgrade half way through the holiday. It was well worth the extra and we stuck with it this year. I'd hope that the quality problem with standard dining was temporary and that Butlins will have addressed it by now, especially for those guests who may not want to pay the extra. The Deck is modern and stylish, with an international menu, and you can also choose from the more traditional Yacht Club. Whichever restaurant each of your party chooses their food from you can all sit together in either depending on your taste. There is plenty of choice for children and enough vegetarian options, both at dinner and breakfast. The breakfast menu is particularly impressive, with a list of over 40 different delicious things to eat. The staff there are friendly and welcoming, as they are in the rest of the resort. We've never come across any grumpy ones, as other reviews suggest. From the cleaning and catering staff to the Redcoats, everyone has always been very helpful. I've also always been impressed with the cleanliness in the toilets. It's about the only place I know of where you don't have to make a compromise between having a toilet seat, loo roll and a functioning lock! The soap and paper towel dispensers never seem to run out and the bins don't overflow either.
There's always plenty to do, both during the day and the evening, with activities and shows early morning to late at night. Some of the early shows can be very popular so you need to be prepared to queue if you don't want to pay extra for b line passes. Having said that there's often ad hoc entertainment put on while you wait, so it's not a huge problem anyway. We've always headed off at about nine or ten in the evening so can't comment on the later shows. Our youngest was four when we first went and our eldest is twelve now and there's always been something to suit, and when there's not much going on there's always Splash Waterworld and the funfair, which has just been redeveloped. On a less positive note, it was a shame that the hot weather caused problems on the Helter Skelter which meant the younger children couldn't go on. It didn't effect us, but I could see that other guests had some quite disappointed children and weren't happy about it. Hopefully something will be done to remedy it, if this weather continues. In our time at Butlins we've since some amazing shows, this year's favourites being Dick v Dom, which my son loved and the Big Top Circus which all the family thought was incredible. The Wheel of Death was a bit disappointing in comparison, although friends who were visiting at the same time, for their first holiday, and didn't see the circus until afterwards, were more impressed than we were. Perhaps we've been spoilt by the high standard of previous shows. The African Fusion show was also quite spectacular! All in all we've always had a great time at Butlins with very few problems, if any at all really. I do feel that my twelve year old now has less to do now, but he still really enjoyed it nonetheless. I'd also say that I think some of the resort is looking tired and dated in places - the indoor sports arena could do with a facelift for example - but the kids never notice anything like that so it doesn't really matter that much. Over the years we have noticed lots of improvements to the facilities and have already booked one of the new lakeside chalets for next year. They aren't even built yet, but at the end of the day, we trust Butlins to do everything they can to give us a good holiday, and that's why we keep going.

Just got home yesterday after an amazing family holiday at Minehead.

Accommodation - Silver three room only room it was perfectly adequate for our needs, not 5 stars but was not expecting that paid extra for housekeeping which was worth it, room was clean and any issues dealt with promptly. The beds are very basic and not the most comfy but when we come back we will bring our own fitted sheet which will help.

General area- Its set in a fab location only across the road from the beach and a 15 mins from town centre. There two supermarkets a 10 min walk away ideal for self catering but in fact we chose the dining plan so did not need to use them. If you walk round the bay to the harbour there's a lifeboat station and if your lucky you might catch them practising.

Premium Dining Package- So pleased we chose this option, there a choice of two restaurants but we mainly used The Deck as the other one did not have much choice, where the deck there was always plenty of options, it can get busy but the staff are friendly and helpful. Food is always being replenished and there plenty of things being cooked fresh to order.

Entertainment- We have three boys 13,5 and 2 and we can safely say they all had at least one favourite show. All the Entertainment was a fab quality and definitely worth the money we paid. Not many places you can see Fireman Sam, Bob the builder, Thomas the Tank Engine, Scooby doo, Mike the Knight, Mister Maker, African Fusion and Magic show all included in the price. Mister Maker was lovely with Owain listening about how he been poorly and happy to be shown his scar from a recent operation. Redcoat Matt Magic and illusion was fantastic and inspired the 13 year old. Matt then spent time too with Josh one evening which made his evening.

FunFair-The funfair was great to be included in the price but was a bit tricky with our small 5 year old and size restrictions, had wanted to go on the dodgems for weeks before and then we got there and he was a tiny bit too short even to go on with his Dad. The other issue was the Helter Skelter and the heat, it became a mission to be able to get him on it with dad as it was too hot for double riders up until our very last day when finally he got on it twice

Circus-We paid extra for Circus tickets and it was definitely worth it a fabulous show with lots of variety, the biggest issue was the heat it was absolutely baking in there but this was an issue with a lot of the venues. If there is air condition it needs overhauling or replacing as it takes some of the enjoyment out of the time when you are over heating.

There was so much to do I cant comment on everything but we all had an amazing holiday and will definitely be returning to Butlins and most like minehead

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the Entertainment and bring Own sheets and Bedding

Hi Gemma,

We're so pleased you had lots of fantastic family fun at Butlins Minehead, thank you for such a lovely review. We're glad your little one finally got to go on the Helter-Skelter and hopefully next time he'll be tall enough for the dodgems! It's lovely to hear that our Redcoats and performers have such an impact on our young guests. Thank you for your comments regarding the Circus and accommodation, we will make sure these are passed onto resort.

We can't wait for you to come back again!

Thanks

We've (me, hubby and 7 year old) just got back from a 3 night break from butlins in minehead. This is our 3rd visit as a family. We stayed silver self catering last time and were thrilled and the first time we stayed room only with dining. DON'T PAY FOR DINING, IT'S VILE!

We stayed in the silver apartments and were pleased with how clean it all was, crisp white bedding, no grubbiness in the shower, carpet nice and fluffy etc. we did notice that the power had gone off so hubby called maintenance and they discovered the fridge had broke and had tripped the apartment. Within 30 mins there was a new fridge installed and the power was back - can't fault them for this, it was sorted ASAP!

The entertainment was great as usual - only moan here was on the Saturday night it was a comedian in one arena and a game show in the other. Not great for a disco mad 7 year old, but I suppose they need variety. The scooby doo show was excellent and Gareth Gates was there, he was really good in fairness! There were mega long queues for the entertainment but we always got seats.

My daughter loved the swimming pool, the slides and pool were fab, but the changing room floors were thick with dirt, so much it put me off going again. The fair was also great, staff very friendly and good at making sure people weren't being idiots on the dodgems.

Now here's the negative.....

The add ons were, in my opinion, expensive. £5 for bungee trampolines, £5 for go karts, £7 for us to play crazy golf. I think if you've already paid to go, these should all be included, or much cheaper. The arcade robs you of money too! I know the simple thing to do is not go on them but I couldn't spend the whole of my daughters holiday telling her no.

A few tips:

In Pizza Hut we ordered a large margarita pizza between the 3 of us and you get free unlimited salad - cheap meal out.

Take drinks and snacks with you.

Don't be a slave to the entertainment queues, we always got seats!

Enjoy!

We stayed here during summer holidays with our 3 children and was very disappointed. Most staff were grumpy and rude and just seemed like they didn't want to be there. Accommodation was poor even though we upgraded so we could have a microwave! Equipment was broken and curtain rail hanging from wall. All in all very disappointed considering the price we had paid. Wont be going back in a hurry.

Room Tip: You don't always get what you pay for.
