Arriving at Minehead Station on the West Somerset Railway train from Watchet we headed around town looking for somewhere nice for lunch.
On the seafront, opposite the station you will find Jubilee Gardens Café. Don't be fooled when first seen and just walk past. The main entrance is at the back facing away from the sea.
The surprise is the sheer efficiency of the service in the café area, ice-cream sales area (facing the sea) and popular crazy golf area at back. A strange mix but it works so well. This is due to an active and observant manager prompting younger staff to clear and clean tables and focus on presenting the café well. In some cafés you might see uncleared tables at a busy 13:00, but not at Jubilee Gardens. She lead by example clearing untidily left empty drinks cans from the Crazy Golf.
The menu (including children's) is typical good quality English fare including cream teas and breakfasts. We wanted a simple cup of tea, pasty and chips. We expected a wait as it was very busy but while we were drinking an excellent cup of tea our meal arrived. Note: the Jubilee Café does not have a credit/debit card machine; bring cash!
Café anecdote: When satisfied customers return it says so much. An elderly couple arrived for afternoon tea. She found a table for two and he queued to place their order. Recognised by the manager (who thought they had returned home from their holiday) they were immediately served with their 'usual' toasted tea cake and tea. Service and understanding.
Well done Jubilee Garden Café. Give them a try.
