Just been to Wrest Park for their annual St George's Day pageant

What a great day and a wonderful venue

The house at Wrest Park is beautiful, as are the grounds - English Heritage have done an amazing job.

Likewise, the annual Saint George event that English Heritage put on is equally as excellent. The Park is full of all manner of re-enactments depicting English History through the ages - including, Romans, War of the Roses, Civil War, Crimean War and WWII

Each of the groups have their own encampment and then they enact various conflicts and fighting techniques - its really exciting and interesting. There are then a whole host of market stalls.

Kids love the day out

The climax of the day is St George on his white charger, rescuing the fair maid and slaying the Dragon.

I would recommend Wrest Park any time of the year, but the St George's weekend is extra special

According to information supplied by English Heritage, Wrest Park was the home of the De Grey family from the 13th century to 1917.

In its current state, the main attraction of Wrest Park is the formal gardens. These are in contrast to "Capability" Brown's natural landscape styling and are inspired by the gardens at Versailles.

Take up to a couple of hours to meander around the gardens. There are various interesting points beyond the formal Parterre and Italian Gardens, including the Pavillion, Japanese retreat and the De Grey family's pet cemetry with graves for their beloved dogs.

You can get glimpses into some of the rooms of the manor house, which was completed in 1839. It is popular for weddings, so it would be worth checking if the house is also open. I was lucky that once the wedding ceremony was over, the guests moved to the Orangerie, so could see the interior of the house as well.

If you have an English Heritage membership, be sure to visit this grand estate. Even without, the admission is just over 5 pounds per adult.
