“Nice view shame about the price!!!”
Reviewed 13 November 2010

Whilst I agree the pub is in a nice setting and the views are panoramic.
I find the food is average. Although the food is home made I cannot excuse the fact that one as to wait 50 minutes for it on a Saturday afternoon.
We ordered steak pie which I found rather pricy at £10, considering you can get a decent carvery for £8.50 And especially in this economic climate where people are having to watch the pennies. Maybe you pay for the view!!!

“Oh, the Beer (and the food)!!”
Reviewed 26 August 2010

Outstanding views, lovely old pub and real ale to boot. OK, this place is isolated above Slawit but it's worth the effort to find it. We (family of four) have been numerous times over the years but only once in the past year (not sure why). It's changed quite a bit and for the better I believe. It was always a decent pub with food as far as I'm concerned but this particular visit warrants praise on this site!
If you like Real Ale, firstly you'll love it here - a good selection and kept well.
If you like good Yorkshire faire, you'll love it here - great food albeit at restaurant prices (but that's pretty much the norm these days anywhere).
Summary: Seach this place out for great ale and good food served in a pleasant atmosphere by attentive owners and staff.
(By the way, this place is on the Pennines, but if you manage to visit on those one or two days of decent weather, you will sit outside and will not leave, the views are that good (especially with a pint of Cop Hill Bitter in hand)!

“Good food, decent beer, great views, worth the trip out”
Reviewed 27 May 2009

Any rural pub restaurant with a full car park at 5pm on Wednesday must be doing something right, and the Rose & Crown goes from strength to strength.
Great food (half price Mon-Thurs with a Hi Life card), served very fresh and very hot on hot crockery by pleasant staff in pleasant surroundings. The view outside is lovely too. The menu is definitely good-quality pub food but there are a few unusual dishes plus a specials board so something for everyone (but probably not much for vegetarians). Starters from about £4, mains from about £9, beer £2.60 for Daleside Blonde. Service was a little bit slow on Thursday BUT the place was just about full which was clearly unexpected, and the food was still very fresh. The waitresses ran about to keep up.
The beer quality’s always been a bit mixed (is 4 hand pumps too many perhaps?) but last night was fine. Check with a half pint first.
Always worth booking just in case.
