Owner description: Travel behind Hawk, Owl, Fox, Badger, Jay, Katie or Sian, our friendly little engines here at the home of Yorkshire’s Great Little Steam Trains. Climb aboard for a scenic journey along our 15” narrow-gauge railway, through the beautiful South Pennine foothills to our Shelley terminus where you can enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding area. Visit Shelley Station Tea Room for refreshments or enjoy our large picnic area whilst the kids play on the outdoor playground. At Clayton West, the outdoor play area is ideal for children to ‘let off some steam’ whilst the adults browse the gift and model shop. The café serves hot and cold food and drink whenever the railway is open. Special events include: A Day Out with Thomas, Easter Eggspress, Steam & Diesel Gala, Halloween Ghost Trains and the Santa Specials. We cater for groups, school visits, children's birthdays, private functions and we also offer Driver Experience Courses. Open throughout the year - see our website for details.

Went here with 4 and 2 year old they thoroughly enjoyed it. Beautifully turned out engine, very friendly staff and interesting journey. Play area at either end of line - quite large. Shop and refreshments available. Plus little sit on train to go on outside Clayton West station - does two loops of a circle track. Adults need to mind their head when getting in the small coaches.

Visited the railway with friends and completed the return journey. All the staff were very friendly. The locomotives were immaculately clean and well maintained as were the coaches. The cafe, play areas, toilets facilities were all spotlessly clean. There were also play parks at either end of the line which the children all appeared to be enjoying. Lovely scenic journey in delightful small coaches. Would definitely recommend this for a fun family day out.

Our children bought my husband a train driving experience as a Christmas gift. We went along today and while he was taught the ropes and had his experience we hopped on the next train up the line so our grandchildren could play on the bouncy castle and in the play park. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his experience and recommends that everyone should have a go. There are coffee shop facilities at either end of the line.

It just abut sums it all up when my Grandson described it as awsome. A good day out the train ride, especially the long tunnel was excellent, just a shame that the bouncy castle at the main station was not inflated. Being in sight of the children is a wind up.

We began by looking round the visitors' centre which was very interesting and then took a short ride on the steam engine.
It felt really authentic and the Yorkshire scenery was fantastic. Both my partner and I really enjoyed this trip.
