Being one of my local tourist attractions, I try to visit twice a year in different seasons. Today was superb warm sunshine with a strong breeze making wonderful noises through the trees which follow the line. Special 2 week 20.14% fare reduction in honour of Tour de France Grand Depart having been in the area, so only £5.60 for an all-day adult ticket. The train really does get up a fair speed and the smell of the engine smoke blowing past the open windows is a sheer delight. Opting to return on the next again train, I'd around 70 minutes sat in the sun at the Shelley station picnic benches enjoying refreshments from the smart little almost new café, looking out towards Emley Moor mast. Really cannot fault any aspect of this attraction. Easy run out by car from Wakefield, or catch the 435/436 bus which connects Wakefield and Holmfirth.

We go to Kirklees Light Railway when they hold special event days such as Halloween where you can ride on the "Ghost" train, fantastic surprises on the trip, the kids will love it.

The other occasions "Thomas the Tank" etc are great fun with much to do as well as the train rides.

Well priced and we find value for money.

Took our 3 year old grandson on the Railway, and it was great fun. The ride was longer than expected, which is good, and all the trains looked magnificent. There are nice playgrounds at each end of the track and overall it was a very enjoyable experience. What took the shine off it slightly was the cost; £7/adult, only a £1 off for concessions and charging for children 3 and over. Also, gift shop prices were very high.

Thank you for your review, we are glad you enjoyed your visit to the railway and made use of our facilities such as the adventure playgrounds.
With regards to the price for the visit, we haven't increased our fares since 2010. Also, once you have purchased your tickets, they allow you to have as many trips on the railway as you wish throughout the day.
With regards to the gift shop prices, we have a wide range of stock which is varied to suit customers needs. The price of our stock ranges from souvenirs such as pencils and pocket money toys which start at 50p right the way through to large branded sets which are very competitive prices with other Heritage Railway shops.

I booked an evening special train for a 90th Birthday celebration attended by 50 people. Tea and coffee were served as guests arrived, the train trip was a great experience enhanced by friendly, accommodating crews, and the buffet supper served on our return was comprehensive and satisfying. All the staff made a real effort to ensure that everyone had an enjoyable visit and remained with us until late in the evening.

I came here on May 17th with my three year old grandson, and the day was one the most magical experiences we have had together. We had so much fun, and his imagination was stimulated by all the activities they provided, from donkey rides to face painting to all the train related stuff, rides on the platform on Thomas and fun with the fat controller, to the ride along the line to Shelley.

An amazing super fun day out and looking forward to the next.

Thank you Kirkless railway for this.
