“Late lunch ”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2014 via mobile

Myself and my husband visited this pub for a late lunch as a bit of a treat. The food was lovely, fish and chips and the roast beef dinner. Best of all you can pick your portion sizes ie small/ large. The pub itself was very very busy so I was thinking it was going to take a whole for us to be served or to get our food ... But it was quite the opposite our food came quickly and the service was very good. It's just such a shame that its a misty day as we were unable to see the views however I know we will definitely return and fingers crossed it will be a clear day.

Visited Saturday night with family. The place was packed- the atmosphere is nice and it's a real 'country pub' feel! Sat straight down as too busy at the bar (got there at 1915 or so).

Took a while to order drinks an we weren't in a rush to order food which they respected- the starters were lovely- our party had the Peking duck, prawn cocktail and the terrine. The duck and terrine were fabulous- love the homemade piccalilli on the terrine! The prawn cocktail is well retro but far too much salad on there! The complimentary bread is not needed.

The wine was late and we struggled to order more so the service needs improving, they could look after you a bit more I think- we were sat in the bistro side so maybe we were supposed to be in the 'quiet side' ....

The mains we had were steak, belly pork and the roast duck. Excellent food, particularly the belly pork was lovely and tender and the mash was gorgeous. To say how busy it was I can't fault the standard of presentation! Pudding was chocolate and peanut butter tart (big portion for how rich it was) and the frangipane (fab but ice cream was plain vanilla not amaretto as stated). No offers of coffee or dessert wine tho so slightly mixed review! Will definitely go again.

Went for Sunday lunch. Been many times before. Booked for 1 pm, didn't leave until 4.20 pm, owing to the poor service. Food was good though. We had to ask for the tabe to be cleared after the second and third courses. We also had to ask for desserts and coffee.

This was our first visit to the restaurant and the food was really nice, good portion sizes and fairly priced. But the service lets this place down. We got to the bar at about 6pm on a Sunday ready to dine at 6.30pm, we found loads of staff sitting around chatting and drinking, surely there should be a staff room. The staff throughout the evening were stood around chatting and twice we had to interupt to be noticed. In my opinion there were too many staff with not enough to do, this didn't effect the table service. My coat was thrown over a chair in the bar where staff were taking breaks, drinking etc, I was told it would be left at reception. The Manager dealt with our complaint about this terribly. Unfortunately we shall not return as we feel we can better service elsewhere.

Spent a fantatastically superb evening with friends, some of whom have eaten here before.
A great choice of starters and mains with some very nice sounding puddings and sweets to follow.
I had the duck starter which was excellent, (although a litte messy as no finger bowl was offered or given), and the fish and chips as my main. The main plate was well presented and as the first bite is with the eye I was looking forward to enjoying my meal.
Unfortunately that is where the high expectation from rated reviews turns to slight dissapointment.
The fish was very flakey and washed out, not chunky and firm as expected. The batter didn't stand upto the review either. As a beer batter I was looking forward to a crispy and tasty experience, what I got was oily and a little soggy. The chips were very average and didn't taste like they were cooked in beef dripping as advertised. All very edible just not as expected.
I didn't order a pudding as I had lost my enthusiasm for anything else.
Although I was not blown away with the eating experience the evening still offered much enjoyment. The wide range of beers, wines and spirits from the bar is the best I have ever seen and very well kept and presented. The decor of the restaurant is slightly dated but still very interesting, the whole package created a wonderful atmosphere.
I would eat here again and recommend it but with resvervastion.

Decided to book in for lunch and so glad we did. It was a Tuesday and the fact that it was packed at lunchtime speaks volumes. Food and service were outstanding. Lovely warm atmosphere. Can't wait to go back.
