what a pleasant place which is ideal for the more mature people. If like us you want a cheap place to stay for a couple of days close to the ferry terminal then this place is ideal. The foods is plentiful and the evening entertainment is very good. given the size of the hotel the decor is not too bad. For the price of a nights stay anybody who gives a bad review would never be pleased with a palace.

Room Tip: book a premier room and meals

Stayed here Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 November via National Holidays. Doesn't look much from the outside but much better inside. Our room was very basic but was cleaned every day and towels renewed. The best part was the wonderful, delicious and varied menus each day, all self service. The staff in the dining room were warm and friendly and cleared/relaid tables quickly and efficiently. That said, we found ourselves on the 7th floor. Our 1st night we called the desk to report cigarette smoke in our corridor. Someone did come up and informed us that floors 6-12 were for smokers and they could smoke in the rooms. We asked for a change of room as we did not smoke and didn't like the smell. We were turned down, being told that the hotel was full and there were no rooms available, and told that we should have requested a non-smoking floor! The next night we called the desk again as we had no lights in the room when we returned after a day out. This was fixed right away. I don't think that I would use this hotel again due to their cigarette policy and allowing guests to take thier dogs with them.

Room Tip: If you don't smoke, make sure you ask for a room on a non smoking floor or you will be surrounde...

After reading some of the reviews i was somewhat apprehensive about staying at this hotel. However it was nothing like i'd read. The rooms(harbour view) are basic, amply big enough, clean & tidy. The towels were changed daily, bed comfortable with clean bedding. The dinning area appeared a little daunting when entering for the 1st time( caters for over 1.000 customers)but staff are very helpful.Tables are wiped & reset after each sitting, there is a good choice of hot or/and cold food, pudding &/or sweets - all very taste. All is self service. The entertainment caters for everyone - bingo. dancing old time, rock & roll, caberet which is excellent. I & my party had a very enjoyable stay at Great Burstin hotel & would not hesitate to return.

Staff friendly. Rooms basic but clean. Entertainment seemed to cater more for the older traveller. Therefore after one evening of suffering the band and bingo decided to venture into Folkstone. Found a great pub called the Samual Peto a converted chapel which was lively, fun and cheap.
Excursions with Majestic where good but found we were rushing as you weren't given enough time to explore. Overall a very good holiday and definitely value for money.

Having recently noted the Which! report on best and worst hotels, and that Britannia Hotels were in the bottom 3, I have to disagree.
Our recent visit to the Grand Burstin was fine. A nice clean bedroom with balcony and harbour view, excellent food (premier), and amazing prices.
Okay the outside looks a bit rundown and the inside a bit oldfashioned, but the atmosphere was good, far better than an anonymous Hilton or suchlike.
Ideally situated for the Channel Tunnel, Dover and sightseeing (Canterbury, Deal, Hastings), this hotel has to be one of the best for basics, so please review it accordingly.

Stayed for one night on 30th October. We had made a reservation with LateRooms.com two weeks earlier and had full confirmation etc. On arrival at the agreed time of 9.00pm the receptionist could not find our booking either by booking reference number or name. Funny thing is that we had read about this happening on this website. The receptionist eventually said they had a spare room and asked us to pay the hotel direct - surely they couldn't be trying to save the booking fee??. The "spare room" was on the 7th floor - when we stepped out of the lift the whole floor reeked of cigarette smoke. Our room was at the end of the block and it too was very smelly. To keep it that way the hotel had kindly provided an ashtray for us - isn't it illegal to smoke in public hotel rooms?? Apart from the smell the room was fairly well equipped with clean linen and a selection of toiletries. The beds were comfortable. The breakfast buffet was served in a kind of canteen but was well presented and tasty. Given the low price the style of room and breakfast was fine BUT the smell of smoke is still in the clothes we were wearing. The whole hotel seemed that it needed a refit but if you are looking for a cheap basic room it would be fine provided you like cigarettes.

Room Tip: Phone the hotel to confirm booking if you do it through an agency and If you are a non-smoker insist...
