“DO NOT STAY HERE”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 August 2013

Booked in to stay two nights. As I am pregnant, I specified TWICE on the booking form for a non-smoking room away from any smoking areas. Arrived to be given a room in the smoking area and an ash tray sitting on the side table in the room. Room stank. In fact the whole hotel either stank of cigarette smoke or urine! After waiting for over 20 minutes at reception to complain and ask for a new room, were told that although we specified that we wanted a non-smoking room, as it was done through a booking agent they didn't give us one as they weren't any available. I asked them could they not have phoned us using the contact number and I wasn't give a response. We were then offered a twin room in a non-smoking area which we accepted grudgingly only to be told that it was not gone. So, we were offered a smoking room with a balcony as "most people smoke on the balcony". Again my partner and I stressed that I was 7 months pregnant and did not want to stay anywhere near a smoking area never mind in a room where someone had been smoking. We were then offered help to find another hotel which consisted of being handed a map of the town and being told to head up a road and there'd be hotels on it. I asked to speak to the manager at this point who just happened to be standing right beside the check-in clerk clearly ignoring what was going on. He did not acknowledge us once even when I demanded that they phone and find us somewhere else to stay at the same price. After about another 5 minutes or so, the manager finally decided to step up and take over. Whilst standing waiting, there were a number of other guests making complaints about being placed in smoking rooms or rooms with no windows!
Whilst standing at reception the smell of cigarette smoke and urine was overpowering. Staff did not seem to be bothered by queue lengths with a number of them just standing at the side watching. Doesn't matter how much "good value for money" this hotel thinks it is, it was disgusting inside and out. Would avoid at all costs!

Room Tip: We tried to write what we would like (sea view, non-smoking) on the booking form and it didn't m...

Stayed here a few times now and best room stayed in so far and breakfast in Victorian Restaurant (?) was a lot better than previous. This hotel has its faults but for price they ask you do get reasonable value.

Room Tip: Ask for harbour view

Booked this as a cheap hotel prior to a ferry crossing the next day. Arrived at the hotel to an inaccessible car park due to cars being parked all over the place. A beautiful array of smokers blocking the front door then a queue to check in!
Fire alarm went off at 04:00 then again at 06:00 breakfast was not good just cheap muck left under hot lamps. Glad to leave the hotel. Needs a massive refurb.

I DONT KNOW WHAT SOME PEOPLE EXPECT FOR THE PRICE ,We stayed fri to mon and enjoyed the food and entertainment,We asked for a sea view / balconyand smoking room and didnt get any. and met a couple who didnt want smoking but got the lot# .It didnt matter cos we didnt stay in our room much..People should chill out and get on with it . we would definately stay again.

Room Tip: BEG for what you want or pay to upgrade but that may not be possible if its full.

What a nightmare. So old, run down and out of date.
The staff try very hard to be happy and helpful but clearly are only just holding on to the will to live.
The food is marginally better than that thrown into those back alley waste bins.

Do yourself a favour and book elsewhere.

after booking two neighbouring rooms for a weekend break with our daughter when we arrived we were at seperate ends of the hotel the rooms were dirty curtains fell down sheets stained the inside of the windows were full of bird poo and the ceilings filthy when reported i was advised how to rectify the problems and taken back to the room with a senior staff member her reasons for the agread dirtyness was " they should of put you on the other side of the hotel as that is clean the staff are mainly foreign and on minimum wages" i was appauled at her comments even more appauled when walking down the corridore there was bathroom waste strewn along the corridor( i have pictures) then once i sat on the chair in our room it trapped my leg as it was broken and i am now sporting a lovely bruised and cut leg I suggest a revamp as it is old and very dirty ........... However the cliffton is lovely

Room Tip: ask for the clean side of the hotel

It would be easy to list the faults in this Hotel. Suffice to say it is in need of serious TLC. However, it wasn't bad for what we were looking for which was a cheap Bank Holiday getaway for a few days. We requested a non-smoking room away from the entertainment, which is what we got. The room and bed linen were clean, the staff polite and the breakfast adequate.

Only downside, I thought there could have been more information about the Hotel in the room, i.e Fire Escape procedure (we encountered what appeared to be a fire alarm test on Monday morning which guests weren't aware of and which staff didn't know about, rendering lifts out of action with several coach loads of people coming/going).

It's a very busy hotel, catering for coach loads of people stopping over on their way to/back from Dover. There was 'live entertainment' and bingo, which isn't our sort of thing but it wasn't unpleasant and there was generally a good vibe around the place

Can't comment on eating in the Hotel in the evening as we ate out. There are nice pubs and restaurants close by. Folkestone, a once thriving Victorian seaside resort and Ferry Port, has faded away in recent years, but is gradually starting to come back into its own. Nice base to explore Kent with good bus links across the County.

I would say that as long as you do your research and don't mind its shortcomings, it isn't a bad place to stay for a few days.

Room Tip: Rooms are quieter away from the live entertainment on the ground floor. Worth noting there are a cho...
