“Good value for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 September 2013

Having read all the bad reviews before taking a week's holiday in early September with coach holidays dot com we wondered what we were in for - then realised that the worst reviews were mostly from a few years back.
Don't get me wrong this is not the Ritz, but if you want value for money then this is the place you are looking for. We stayed in room 737 with a view across the harbour and a small sandy beach. Ours was a smoking room but I can honestly say I didn't notice any smell of nicotine. Perhaps this was due to the fact the windows were open when we arrived and we always had them open while we were out during the day.
PROS: Our Premier room had plenty of space with a large wardrobe, two cupboards, two drawers and two chairs to relax in. The staff were all very friendly and helpful - even got assistance when the WiFi connection stopped working on my iPOD. There's entertainment and live music every evening. If you like sequence or ballroom dancing there's plenty of opportunity to stretch you legs early on - nothing is organised, but both the 'background' and live music is entirely suitable as is the floor. Also, Bingo lovers will like it here as there's several games played during the evening.
CONS The lifts are a bit confusing as some lifts only go to certain floors. The choice on the main restaurant menu is a little limited but adequate - not sure quite why other people have complained that it's cold, I found it was hot enough. The walls separating the rooms are thin and we did hear some snoring from next door - but we also took ear plugs and used them to get a good nights sleep. The harbour view was a little spoilt as the channel crossing facilities closed some time back and are all run down - not the hotel's fault.
OVERALL You always get what you pay for, but this rates highly on my list of good value for money.

we booked the burstin for seven nights bed and breakfast as our usual hotel the portland was full,we did this in spite of the terrible reports on trip advisor as it was in the area we required, what a pleasant surprise, we were on the ninth floor with a sea view over sandgate and a balcony, we have to admit on entering the room there was a faint stale smell of smoke, however on opening the patio doors this soon dissapeared, the room was spotless the bed linen sparkling white, the shower worked perfectly and we had clean white towels every day, on arrival we were welcomed by Joey and he seemed very pleased to greet us and proved a great help during our stay, as were all the staff..the breakfast buffet style was what you would expect in a large hotel but was more than adequate, the evening entertainment was very enjoyable. the fire alarm went off twice during our stay but the hotel is not to blame for this, as guests persist in smoking on NON SMOKING ROOMS. we have to say we really enjoyed our stay and all the staff from reception to the cleaners could not have been more welcoming. perhaps we were lucky who knows? perhaps if we visit again we could be like many others and find lots to complain about but I feel it is worth a chance

I have a labradoodle who wouldnt eat this cold inedible excuse for food absolutely disgusting . How can staff keep a straight face when people are going into the room described as a restaurant.! Room ok but probably queen victoria stayed here aged 6 as all so dated decor should be part of museum exhibit.

just back from a caledonian trip here with visit to ostend included.we stopped at p.j,s chocolate factory in ostend for cigarettes etc and were told pay in sterling for better rates.i was charged £540 for 10 packs of lambert and butler cigs, which as i didnt know price there,i paid.when i walked away from till i checked receipt (which guy behind counter)had put in bag, which said 12 packs of cigs.i had asked for 10 and only 10 were in bag.i complained to no avail,so told driver who said he had been ripped off to as had 6 other people in coach.these guys are crooks but as coaches have to use them(on itininery)dont buy from there or if you really must, pay in euros(118 to £ the day i was there),but plenty tobacco shops in ostend to buy from.would love to receive reply from there boss, but dont think i will.ROBBERS.hotel is okay, staff friendly, entertainment brill but food of poor quality, but you can always find something to eat.

Room Tip: it was very warm last week and had to keep windows open all night which meant seagull screeching kep...

My husband and I having stayed at the Burstin in 2006 thought we would like to go back for our wedding anniversary could not believe we were in the same hotel ..On arrival room key thrown to you on the coach then told the policy is no portarage absolute chaos getting a lift ..Room grotty dirty carpet's decoration disgusting polysterine ceiling tiles grotty and stained ...NO HOT WATER took 3 days to sort this out ..We were lucky the weather was good as it was cold showers while we were there.Bedding filthy towel's grey and full of hole's should be white ..The shower head we had to tie with a shoe lace to keep it in place .Clean towel's was hit and miss as was coffee tea etc.. No apolgy from managment ..The passage ways were disgusting carpets all stained paper and paint work peeling away ..The doors look like they haven't been cleaned in year's .ROOM 457 don't stay in this room extractor's going all night ..refuse crusher start;s working at 4 30 in the morning the same time the delivery's start ....Beware when you go on the France and Belgium trip you will be queuing from the restaurant entrance to reception for your evening meal when you get back .At 7 20 pm from 7 00am in the morning all for the benefit of stopping in France for 30 minuets and 1 hour 30 minutes in Belgium this is a waste of a day .We upgraded to the Victoria restaurant as we had done on our first visit and we were so pleased we did as the people that we spoke to eating in the Harbour restaurant told us that a leak started on Monday night over the buffet section and was still not mended on Friday morning when we departed ...Everything was filthy in the cabaret room from dirty glasses to table's left dirty from people bringing takeaways into the room they are allowed to bring food in ... The staff in the Victoria restaurant the staff were excellant the rest of the staff were downright rude and unhelpful ...Entertainment rubbish ....MAJESTIC should inform there customer's that there long haul coach's have NO TOILET'S .they don't tell you that you have to change coach's..They also do not tell you that the lift's in this hotel are not big enough for wheel chair's ..

Me and my good stayed here whilst on a charity bike ride to Belgium http://www.freekicksfoundation.org/. When we arrived it was cold, wet and dreary. However the mood changed when we walked through the front door. Extremely pleasant and helpful staff helped us store our tandem in a back room and directed us to the buffet. The food was stunning. Just what we need after a hard days cycling. We couldnt have asked for me. Except maybe someone to dry our cycling gear which was soaked. Maybe we'll ask next year.

My wife and I have just spent a wonderful 5 day holiday at the Grand Burstin Hotel in Folkstone Kent. Our holiday was arranged by the coach holiday company Alpha, Our room was basic very clean, and had a beautiful view over the harbour, and we could even see the ferries and cruise ships leaving Dover harbour too. The restaurant we used was buffet style, which suited us, the choice of menu was good too. The evening entertainment included, bingo, live music and had a decent sized dance floor. The drinks prices were comparable with city centre pubs. There are many lovely places to see in this area of Kent and the Grand Burstin is the ideal place to base yourself, we will definitely visit this hotel again.

Room Tip: Pay a little bit extra for a room with a sea view, you wont regret it.
