Grand Burstin Hotel

Read some of the comments on this hotel (after booking) so approached the hotel with great trepidation. We were pleasantly surprised. Ok, so the hotel is a bit tired but clean and warm with very attentive staff. The pool area is a bit scruffy but we enjoyed a swim and the sauna. The food was buffet style and plentiful and continually replaced during meal times. Nothing exotic but loads of different salads and a good stodgy sponge pud and custard.....heaven! The hotel achieved a HOT buffet breakfast which many (even high rated ) hotels fail to do. Really could not grumble even down to toiletries provided and towels changed every day which we did not expect at these prices. Do not know what people expect but think that they must make themselves miserable looking for faults!

Room Tip: We did not bother with the available upgrade for dining and were perfectly content with the cheaper...

I stayed at this very tired hotel for two night. The rooms are very tired and the bathrooms are needing replacing and upgrading. There are two restaurant in this hotel one which I called the canteen and the other the up grade as you paid extra to eat the same food but sit in better surroundings. The food in the canteen was very poorly presented. The bar closed very early and wasn't allowed in the ballroom to use the bar in there as it was a private function for the tour company's in the hotel. The fire alarm went off at 6.45 each morning and a tanoy message was broadcast on both days saying false alarm. Funny it was the same time each morning. All in this hotel needs a very big upgrade and perhaps windows would not need to be taped up on the staircase on floor one and two not sure about the other floors.

Room Tip: look else were

Having read negative reports for this hotel we were pleasantly surprised to find it was comfortable and clean in all repects and the staff were fantastic. Although our room was on the side and the outlook wasn't very nice someone has to have a side room - it would be impossible for everyone to be on the front and have sea views ( having said that - if you're reading this review National holidays why is ALWAYS US that gets the side rooms!!!!! ) However our room was spotlessly clean with crisp white linen and the en suite was first class with shower gel etc provided. The bedroom also had a good size television and a kettle with plenty of tea and coffee etc. The heater on the wall worked perfectly and soon warmed the room up ( it was January and cold outside ) when the heating wasn't enough to cope. We never had to wait long for a lift to go down ( there's three lifts ) despite the hotel being full. The food was good enough if not top quality and there was always a good choice on the buffet. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and well maintained so for what we paid with National holidays it was a real bargain. The entertainment on a night was of a reasonable standared let down only by the DJ who hadn't a clue and spent more time outside smoking, playing with his phone or stood at the bar talking to staff. No music was introduced to 'gee up' the dancers and on the last night the disco lights were not flashing as if to say 'Go to bed we want an early night'! ( I might explain at this point I've spent 49yrs as a professional entertainer and do NOT expect to see this lazy conduct. ) The hotel is mainly full of people wanting to buy duty free tobacco and so don't expect to find the usual class of holidaymaker there. It really was the worst class of people we've come across staying on National holidays - THIS IS NOT THE HOTELS FAULT so not a smear on the hotel. It seemed all that mattered was to get to Belgium to purchase their baccy ( and most of them DIDN'T smoke - get my drift? ) and most of them return week after week!!! Having said all that we WILL return to the Grand Burstin as we had an enjoyable time just people watching and as I've said before it really is value for money.

Room Tip: Floors 6 and 7 are smoking bedrooms.

Where do I start - first forget the "grand" and yes I did deliberately not start grand with a capital letter. This is the worst hotel I have ever been to, the room very shabby and none too clean, the food terrible - all I found worth eating was the salads! We had asked to upgrade but was unable to do so although I cannot imagine that it would have been a great improvement. Eating in the large dining room was like being back at school, although the food at school was in my opinion better!

I would never go back to this hotel even if the management paid me to do so!!!

Can not find words to describe this hotel. Went for a 60's music weekend break and although the music was good the hotel was not. The lifts did not always work, there was a damp smell on our floor and the food was so bad we ate out. Will not be going back.

Room Tip: Have a front facing room overlooking arbour
