“Disgusting and seriously Dangerous!”
Reviewed 29 March 2014 via mobile

I took my Mum away this weekend for a break. What a mistake! We couldn't eat the food it was terrible we found some gammon and salad eventually and dessert was jelly - in 41 yrs old - I don't want jelly! Everyone was laughing in shock at the appalling food. School canteen from the 70's!

The rooms we had had scaffolding outside (some sea view!) I touched the screen on the TV thick with grime, bathroom tiles missing, cracked sink, filthy doors and windows.

On top of this we had a fire - initially the fire alarm went off and over the tannoy in the corridor we were told false alarm. It went a second time and nobody knew what to do! No sign of staff! Eventually we went to find fire escape it was blocked by other people who couldn't get out they said it was blocked so at my own risk I took my mum back through the main hotel and we found our own way out but even the ground floor exit was concreted dead end! We saw 2 staff on main entrance. The was an actual fire on the second floor! People could have died! I'm so relieved everyone was ok but I swear I will be asking for a full refund and writing a full complaint. It was disgusting leaving older/disabled people out the front in their nightware with no communication no blankets!

The hotel doesn't deserve to be operating and I fear it's one of those places that won't be shut down until someone's seriously hurt.

Shame on you Burstins! Please don't use this hotel for your own safety I hope you see sense.

Overall good value: good room & facilities, mostly clean, staff helpful and most friendly, reasonable food, good entertainment

Room : 235 Facing harbour, £5 per head/night for sea view. Spacious, comfortable king sized bed, shower worked well after initially running hot water for a few minutes, plenty of fresh quality towels, passable small TV. Windows dirty on outside. Lots of litter/cigarette butts on reception roof below. Ours was not marked as a non smoking room, but did not smell of cigs at all. Pictures in room we changed from was of Marylin Monroe and the one we moved to ( 235 ) was of a reclining. naked and pregnant ? woman - how dreary - they could have used some of the many sea/ harbour/sailing pictures they have in the lounge area.

Lifts : 3 lifts – 2 of which are small and get very crowded with large no of guests, so you often have to wait ages for one to get on. Many guests struggled with their luggage on fairly narrow stairs.

Lounge/Bar area : lots of comfortable, though worn arm chairs. Plenty of gaming machines, snooker table, large TV, cash machine, Place kept very clean.

Main Restaurant Harbour View : spacious, but very busy. Tables cleared quickly and place kept very clean. Not a relaxing experience in the evening due to volume of people, unavoidable noise and bright lights. Pre entry hand gels which many guests used.

Victoria Restaurant: £5 per head per night and following day breakfast. Very pleasant décor, spacious, leather chairs, they light a candle for your table – far less crowded.
Carvery on Wednesday/Sunday and cheese and coffee are extra above main Restaurant. Staff welcoming and helpful, especially Hekman. General lighting could have been dimmed a bit in evening.

Food : Breakfast : good selection of cereals, tinned fruit only and cooked bacon, eggs etc . Dinner : good selection of salads and of main dishes including one fish item, and deserts, including one hot item, but beef on carvery night over cooked ( but turkey/ham fine ) and every night most vegetables cooked to death and lacking flavour.

Service : room kept very clean and main reception very quick with responses for items like extra pillows ( which we found in wardrobe ) extra shower gels, correcting TV poor viewing etc. Reception staff very friendly ( except for one officious sounding female ) and helpful which is a great credit to them bearing in mind the hundreds of guests they deal with per day.

stayed here again via Caledonian travel.once again absolutely brilliant entertainment and Shaun, chloe and the 2 dancers and the group go well out of there way to provide excellent shows for all to enjoy.catch the Folkestone teenybopper demo if you can they are very good too.now the bad news, food cold 90 percent of the time.very poor quality and for Kent being the garden of England, fresh apples and pears provided had no taste at all.the cold meat(gammon)is really tasty, but all the rest inedible.this place always draws crowds back and I assure you its not for the food.décor is out-dated and lifts broke down 4 or 5 times we were there.workmen working there too at the moment.do not use the gaming machines.my wife wasn't paid out over £15 and although complaint to reception was informed, nothing to do with us, not our machines.complained to owner of machines who just laughed.this happened to a few guests over the week, so don't play them.maybe then something will be done.you have been warned.so take a bow all entertainment staff, if it weren't for you, this place would be closed down

Room Tip: Upgrade.and if you smoke ask for smoker room

We weren't asked if we wanted a non/smoking room, and as soon as I walked in, I could smell smoke, so make sure you tell them what you want.
When we went there were 8 coach parties and when going into the Harbour Restaurant it was a "free for all" everyone pushing and shoving, the chairs and tables were like in a works canteen. We upgraded at £5 a day to The Victoria Restaurant, what a difference! Lovely tables and chairs, and waitresses to help, although it was buffet style. Food was very good.
The evening entertainment was good for a small entertainment team, and bingo spot on time each evening.
Overall you only get what you pay for. Hotel needs an upgrade, old paint, carpets, the old locking handles on bedroom doors have been replaced with yale locks, leaving them coming away from the doors. Internal phone in bedroom didn't work, but the bed was comfortable Lift number 4 doesn't stop level with the floor it has arrived at, so go careful not to trip up or down.

I read some previous reveiws and was a little unsure. But for what we paid, the rooms were clean and tidy, towels clean, plenty of hot water, ensuite bath, shower and toilet excellent. The evening meal and breakfast was fine. Evening entertainment was good.
This hotel deserves a good reveiw. Would definately stay again.

It was dirty, the staff were rude, it stank of cigarettes on the floor we were on. Dining room was madness - don't go - it's horrendous. We upgraded to the Victorian dining room and that was slightly better - not as manic and the staff were really friendly and polite. Folkstone is also not very nice.

Room Tip: No good rooms - you get what you are given and that's it.

We stayed here with National Holidays and whilst it was cheap it was very tired looking and the rush in the main dining room was like a stampede. We upgraded for £5 to the Victorian Restaurant and it was well worth it. The soundproofing between rooms was poor, you could even hear the light switch in the adjoining room and if you were over the bar I was told it was horrendous. Never again
