“THE "GRAND BURSTIN"!”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

my wife and i and two friends have just returned from a weeks stay in this hotel.all i can say is NEVER again! Fawlty Towers HAS NOTHING ON THIS PLACE.the state of this "hotel" is a disgrace .stinking rooms, very cheeky catering staff.we returned to hotel after a day trip to Brugges, delayed at the tunnel,no food for us...no help from the staff in reception.....just laughed at us!!!!!!!!!!!! we were offered a tin of soup?...after travelling all day!!!!!!!!!!!we had to buy our own fish suppers.our friends had to move rooms due to water dripping in through ceiling, only for the cleaner to leave their room door open after another day trip.i could go on and on about this place.......in conclusion.....DONT STAY IN THIS "HOTEL"!

Room Tip: best tip is to avoid this hotel

My wife and stayed there on a Saturday night before going to France on the Shuttle service the following morning. The room smelled of smoke and was in a dilapidated condition but the bedding was spotless and the bathroom was clean. Breakfast the following morning was average. The cost was £53 for bed and breakfast so I suppose you get what you pay for. Would I stay there again - to be honest I'm not sure.

The grand burstin is a huge hotel in the not very picturesque harbour area of folkestone, the hotel is definitely tired and needs updating, our family room was basic but large and fully functional, the lack of air conditioning in the rooms is not pleasant especially during the recent hot spell. We ate in the Victorian restaurant one evening and the food was very good, all you can eat buffet for 9.95, we also had breakfast at the hotel which was again buffet style and found it really nice with a good selection of items to choose from. there was entertainment on in the evenings which we found would be better suited to the over 60s, bingo, singer etc, not really for a family. Bar was reasonably priced and plenty of seating but again tired looking, didn't try the gym or pool. staff pleasant but seem stressed, maybe because it's peak season and they are rushed off their feet. overall for what we paid this was a perfectly reasonable stay.

If you like cheap and cheerful this is for you. No frills no class and no over pricing. The area at night at the weekends does not feel safe to walk through in the evening due to lager louts. The rooms were clean but basic. No air conditioning and the car park is not large enough but you can park directly across the road for cheaper.

Stayed here Sat night, WHAT A MISTAKE !!!!
Was given a "SMOKING ROOM" (619) STANK !!!
Dirty, dank, and we slept on top of the bed
Booked half board, walked into restaurant and straight out. Went to Rock Salt, very nice.
UP IN THE MORNING AND GONE !!!!
TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY

Room Tip: Hope it's full up !!!!

Our two night stay at Grand Burstin was part of our three day trip to Brugge with National Holidays.Given the bargain cost of this deal we had no great expectations, just a clean room & edible canteen style food.Food & choice was better & more plentiful than expected Our room was at the end of a wing on the second floor & was adequate although spoilt to a degree by the filthy windows. At 1.30 am we were awakened by the fire alarm, so walking the length of the corridors we passed open doors with people asking what was going on but we were the only people to follow fire drill from that wing/floor. We only saw two others from higher floors on the stairs & reaching Reception we were told it was a false alarm & an announcement had been made on being told that we had heard nothing nor seen any staff an announcement was made. Had this been a fire there would have been many casualties.Fiddling while Rome burnt was the phrase which came to my mind. I would not have believed the reaction of the majority if I had not experianced it for myself.
This was brilliant value & better than we could have expected.

Room Tip: Second floor was convenient.

This was booked through a travel agent whom we had vouchers for to use up so I was unable to check reviews before booking. Big mistake and I will be speaking to travel agent about recommending this place.
The hotel is in a good location to overlook the harbour, we were there for one night before going through the channel tunnel next morning and one night again on our return two weeks later.
There were 6 of us in 3 rooms which I requested to be together. Our 1st visit they were fairly close together but on totally different floors the 2nd time.
First impressions - it's a huge hotel, it's very busy, mainly with older people on coach trips or families on an overnight stay waiting on ferry or tunnel.
It's very shabby and tired looking. Needs totally redoing. Carpets sticky, dirty and old. Decor dated, chipped and dirty. Entertainment in our opinion is very 'holiday camp' bingo, cheesey cabaret acts etc
If that's your kind of thing then great. But we couldn't listen to them play the same 4 songs on a loop any longer.
There's 3 main lifts in reception area, they are very small and slow. So when people have cases and buggies and then housekeeping use it with trolleys and bins etc it's a nightmare.
Our first lot of rooms were nicer than 2nd, seems some bits of the hotel are 'newer' but all reeks of smoke even though non smoking. There's a night club at one side so if you are unlucky enough to face that you will have noise till 2am which to be fair isn't the hotels fault but nice to know.
Cleanliness isn't great, bathrooms awful, it's the first time I've got out a bath as it made me feel dirtier!
Stains on carpets, ceilings, leaks in ceiling with buckets to catch drips.
Couches in lounge are sticky and burst. We were cleaning our own tables to sit at. The bar was running out of everything. The breakfast was ok but a bit of a free for all to get anything hot.

The room my daughters (17 & 13) were in had a toilet which didn't flush. I reported this, someone came to look it couldn't do anything about it as it was late night. Fair enough but instead of moving them to another room they were left there overnight without a flushing toilet! Totally unacceptable.
We were happy to pay the £3.50 to park in hotel car park but it's tiny and you are very lucky if you get a space.

The beds are very hard and uncomfortable, rooms unbearably hot, feels like there's no air. We resorted to taking duvet cover off duvet, lying on top of duvet for extra comfort and using duvet cover as a sheet. It was still too hot to sleep.

We absolutely won't be back here and wouldn't recommend it to anyone no matter how good a deal it seems.
