Always waiting for manuel to turn up ,very dated 1970 wood chip and furniture haven' t seen a t.v that big in years 1940,50 ,s light switches with a damp smell
Shower trickled ,curtain to short which didn't matter as the trickle was containable ,shower holder also had fell off
For a pit-stop if desperate fine ,but not for me definitely a two star and I Feel that's being generous ,It needs updating I heard the sister hotel was even worse
Waitress at breakfast was on the ball and gave a good service ,breakfast was ok sausages terrible, payed for two days ,left early
Have stayed in the Burstin a couple of times much nicer for the money abit Benidorm but great for people watching and clean

Room Tip: We had one of the best rooms apparently If you liked the 70,s you will love it here

I booked this for my parents who were travelling down from Scotland and who needed a decent night's stay before heading on to France. For this purpose I aimed for a twin room and try as I might couldn't get a Travel Lodge to come up trumps. Besides- the prices were sinful, given my parents would not be arriving till late in the evening. Oddly enough I happened on the Carlton Hotel because of a review which started with "Please do not believe all the nasty reviews about this hotel..." and it was a no brainer (didn't ever read the review- it was enough to want to try it).

So, I phoned the Carlton Hotel directly to ask about twin rooms, vacancy and price and couldn't have been more pleased with the gentle and polite manner of the hotel staff. I was asked for a name only (meaning- it was a arrangement on trust, no credit card cancellation fees to worry about), told that arriving at any time was fine and that there were plenty restaurants in the immediate vicinity for a late dinner. I was confident that it would all work out fine because the hotel was very quick to address my concerns. Besides- it was half the price of a Travel Lodge AND included breakfast!

The room was large, airy, with high ceilings and the view not half bad for a wet misty day. Most importantly the bedlinen was white and not synthetic! The bathroom was adequate if quite, quite shabby and is where the hotel could improve. Also- no toiletries which is not normally an issue except that my mum had forgotten to take shampoo with her and so was not able to make full use. Perhaps the ability to purchase some at reception would be the optimal solution.

Here is what my parents have to add: "The 'shabby chic' hotel in Folkestone. Peeling paint, wobbly floorboards but- lovely white linen bedding and- wow- table service at breakfast! So good not having to beat the starving fellow humans for your breakfast egg early in the morning! And it was the cheapest hotel we could book!"

In closing- since we too will be making the journey to France we will undoubtedly have cause to need a bed for the night. Now will not go elsewhere- shabby is OK. As long as it is clean and honest. ;)

Whatever you do, please do yourself a favor and DO NOT stay at this hotel. I stayed there last week with a group and the rooms are old, dirty, run down, dated, nasty..you name it. My teen boys had a room on the top floor with plywood nailed to the wall. There is no a/c or even a fan and it was during the 97 degree heat wave. To top it all off the manager turned the water off at night because another room had a pipe leak in and it flooded her room. The restaurant staff was very friendly and the food was good as well as the location but there are much better places to stay on the same street. STAY AWAY!

Room Tip: We had 16 of the rooms and they were ALL horrible!

I stayed for one night in the Carlton hotel folkestone in July 2013. Very reasonable prices for the rooms excellent location for exploring the area. The rooms are large and comfortable. Very clean just a but old and dated looking. Breakfast was very good and the staff are friendly and helpful. So overall I had a lovely nights sleep a good breakfast and it didn't cost much. Would definitely stay here again.

The view from the front of the hotel is AMAZING! But the rooms are gross! My tour group used this hotel. The blankets were moth eaten, there was NO HOT WATER in our showers, the floors have never seen a vacuum! There were drunk people leaving the bars and we could hear them outside our rooms, the seagulls woke us up several times in the middle of the night! It was awful! It's a cool old building, but not kept up well. It was more like crashing at a friend's house. The soap is used, there's no working tv's. No money has gone into upkeep. It was weird!?? There were lots of other hotels - use one of them. But do take a walk up and down the cliff. Beautiful. The people working at the hotel were super sweet and friendly. Nice bar to sit at downstairs with free wi-fi. It's 10 minutes from the ferry over the English Channel and great view of the White Cliffs of Dover. There's a restaurant downstairs which was fine. There's a Pizza Hut around the corner and a convenience store if you need "American" food. We went to a pub a block away that was cool. I'm glad we only stayed one night here. We had gone to Dover Castle before the hotel stay which was calm - underwhelming but a great 2 hour wander. I had english tea and scones with clotted cream at the cafe in the castle.

Room Tip: Get a room on the top floors facing the water. Maybe (??) there's less noise from the pub crawle...

The Carlton is in a great spot. She must have been a beauty in her hey-day.
Very good value for money for B&B, just needs a little bit of an update.
The breakfast was delicious. Staff lovely and friendly. Free off road parking, and close to town.
Would stay there again.
