“historic pub”
Reviewed 6 July 2014 via mobile

No gimmicks, no TVs. Just wholesome traditional food, plenty of locals, chatty host/hostess and now, being freehold, a selection of local beers. Try sitting in the "Dickens Snug" for genuine authentic historic pub experience.

Visited on Sunday, lovely old pub with a friendly manager. Ate in the restaurant and the food was very good with very generous portions. Excellent wine and choices of beer. Probabpy the best pub in the area such a good atmosphere.

“Made to feel welcome!”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

We walked here from our guesthouse (The Rob Roy) and enjoyed the British Lion so much the first night of our stay in Folkestone, we returned for our second night!

There is a good choice of very well kept real ales and my partner was more than happy with the choice of wines available. The food is excellent with a good choice and the portion sizes are extremely generous.

Service isn't rushed but we wouldn't describe it as slow either, so we were very happy.

Staff were friendly and helpful, with the general atmosphere in the pub being relaxed.

As noted by at least one other Trip Advisor reviewer, the pub is to be found up a fairly steep hill from the harbour area but it is well worth the effort!

We will definitely return the next time we are in the Folkestone area.

“Excellent pubgrub”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

A Bank Holiday might not be the best time to assess a busy small pub but they coped well even if the service was pretty slow. The surroundings are pleasantly dated there is a good choice of beers and despite the wait the food was first class with generous portions. It takes some beating and is only a stones throw from the harbour but the cliff top location means a hilly walk from sea level.
